Veracruz, puerta de entrada de la

cultura europea en América, es

internacionalista conocido por la

música de Agustín Lara y

nacionalmente apreciado por su

tradicional hospitalidad y deliciosa

comida costeña. Su nombre se

concibió desde el día en que

Hernán Cortés desembarcó en

tierra firme siendo un Viernes Santo

conocido como Vera Cruz, que

quiere decir la “Verdadera Cruz” y

dada la riqueza natural de la región

se le llamó “Villa Rica de la Vera

Cruz”.

El Puerto de Veracruz representa

la tradición de antaño; sus

construcciones antiguas no ocultan

la influencia europea que nos

recuerda que esta fue una de las

primeras ciudades colonizadas del

nuevo continente. El caminar por

los portales y el malecón nos

acerca a la calidez de los porteños,

la música es elemento esencial en

la vida de los veracruzanos; la

marimba, los danzones y los

bailables son un atractivo más que

encontrará en el centro de

Veracruz.

Boca del Río es un municipio

conurbado con el puerto de

Veracruz obtuvo su nombre

desde la l legada de los

españoles (Río Banderas)

debido a la salutación que

hicieron los indígenas a los

españoles con banderas blancas

por lo que los creían enviados

del mismo “Quetzalcóatl”.

Posteriormente es llamada Boca

del Río por vez primera en el

año de 1609 por el obispo

Dominico Alonso de la Mota y

Escobar, nombre que se le da

por estar situado al margen

izquierdo de la desembocadura

del río Jamapa. El 24 de Enero

de 1988 es elevada al rango

de Ciudad.

conceived the day Hernán

Cortes disembarked on a holy

Friday known as Vera Cruz,

which means the “True Cross”

and because of the richness of

the region, the place was

named “Vil la Rica de la

Veracruz” (Rich Villa of the True

Cross).

The port of Veracruz is

representative of old traditions,

its old buildings don’t hide the

European influence that

reminds us that this was one of

the first colonial cities on the

new continent. A walk

through the arcade, and along

the jetty takes us closer to the

warmth of the people of this

port. The music is an essential

element of the lives of the

Veracruz people, the marimba,

the danzones and the

folkdances are one more of the

many attractions to be found

in the Center of Veracruz.

Boca Del Río is a municipality

that neighbors on the Port of

Veracruz. It got its name (Río

Banderas) from the Spanish

because the indigenous people

received them with white flags

because they thought that the

Spanish were envoys of

“Quetzalcóatl”.

Later it was called Boca del Río

for the first time in 1609 by the

Dominican Bishop Alonzo de la

Mota y Escobar, because it is

on the left bank of the mouth

of the Jamapa River. On

January 24 1988 it was elevated

to the status of City.

Boca del Río es un una ciudad en proceso de

crecimiento, su modernidad contrasta con la

riqueza de sus tradiciones de un pueblo lleno de

LOCATING VERACRUZ

The state of Veracruz is located in the eastern

section of Mexico, along the tropical coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

At 72,815 km2 , it’s the tenth largest state in the Republic. Its

coast extends from the Panuco River to the city of Coatzalcoalcos,

745 kilometers of coast line.

It borders with the states of Tabasco to the southeast, San Luis

Potosi, Hidalgo and Puebla to the west, Oaxaca and Chiapas to

the south and Tamaulipas to the north.

México-Puebla-Xalapa o bien por la México-

Orizaba-Veracruz y por el norte del estado vía

La red carretera ha convertido este bello puerto

en uno de los más visitados puesto que las

distancias de las ciudades que colindan con él, no

son considerables, ya sea desde la Ciudad de

México, Puebla, Tlaxcala o Oaxaca llegar a Veracruz

es sumamente sencillo.

Por autobús podemos encontrar las mejores líneas

de transporte como ADO, GL y UNO. Por avión,

las Ciudades de Veracruz y Boca del Río cuentan

con el Aeropuerto Internacional “Heriberto Jara”

que recibe vuelos nacionales directos de varias

ciudades de la república, así como una gran

cantidad de conexiones con el resto del país y

desde Houston en Estados Unidos.

HOW TO GET THERE

Veracruz has a large communications network

that connects it to the rest of the state and the

world, via air, land or sea.

By land one can get there on the Mexico-Puebla-

Xalapa superhighway or on the Mexico-Orizaba-

Veracruz superhighway and from the north of the

state on the Tulancingo-Huauchinango-Poza Rica

superhighway. By land, the modern highway has

turned this beautiful port into one of the most

visited because the distances separating it from

other nearby cities aren’t great, so be it from

Mexico City, Puebla, Tlaxcala or Oaxaca, arriving

in Veracruz is very easy.

The best bus lines go to Veracruz, ADO, GL and

UNO.The “Heriberto Jara” International Airport

serves both Veracruz and Boca Del Río, receiving

flights from many cities within the Republic as well

as a large number of connections with the rest of

the country and from Houston in the U.S.A.

“Un viaje a Veracruz en el

Invierno de 1843” haber visitado

el Café del Portal.

Según el historiador Antonio Salazar

Páez, en 1864 Maximiliano y Carlota

visitaron este café. Varias veces se

cerró y se reabrió. Se dice que en

1881 Don Manuel González, fundó

de nueva cuenta una dulcería y

después repostería, centro de reunión,

que posteriormente vendió a Don José

Fernández “Don Pepe”, oriundo de

Cantabria, España, residente en Córdoba, Ver., con oficio de panadero, quien se traslada a vivir

en el Puerto, junto con su esposa, e inicia la etapa más importante de la vida de este lugar, también

la más difícil, convirtiendo esta esquina por la limpieza, higiene, el magnífico servicio y delicias

culinarias y de repostería, en un sitio obligado de paso para los visitantes de todas partes del mundo

y el lugar acostumbrado para las tertulias diarias y reuniones de los veracruzanos. Personajes de la

política, intelectuales, religiosos,

artistas, han acudido desde

entonces.

Hoy orgullosamente una tercera

generación cuida esta tradición

única de su abuelo, dando honor,

a quien con su e jemplo,

perseverancia, amor y trabajo por

Veracruz, honor merece.

The history of the Gran Cafe del Portal begins in 1824,when Caldevilla, a Cuban who spent years searchingthe pirate Lorenzillo’s treasure; and his wife establisheda candy store on the corner of Principal street, todayIndependencia street, and Gutierrez Zamora street; rightacross the Asuncion Parish.

It later became a refreshment shop, and afterwards, acoffee shop. In his book “A Trip To Veracruz DuringThe Winter Of 1843” Manuel Payno recounts havingvisited the Cafe del Portal.

According to the historian Antonio Salazar Paez, theArchdukes Maximilian and Charlotte visited the coffeeshop. It closed and re-opened several times. It has beensaid that in 1881, Don Manuel Gonzalez establisheda candy store again, and then a bakery, and a socialcentre afterwards.

Don Jose Fernandez, “Don Pepe” acquired theestablishment. He was Spaniard born in Cantabria andresided in Cordoba, Veracruz. He was a baker andmoved to the Port with his wife.

It was then when the most important stage in the life ofthe establishment began, though also the most difficult.It became “a must” for the visitors for its cleanness, itshygiene, its magnificent service, and culinary and bakerydelights. It was the customary place for social gatheringsamongst the Veracruzanos.Celebrities from politics, as well as intellectuals, religious,and artists have come since then.

Today, a third generation proudly takes care of thisunique tradition, honoring him, who with his example,perseverance, love, and work for Veracruz, deserves suchhonor.

La ciudad de Boca del Río y Puerto cuentan con una infraestructura

hotelera de gran diversidad, la mayoría de los hoteles de 5 y 4

estrellas se encuentran en Boca del Río, los cuales brindan todas

las comodidades propias de su clase.

The City of Boca Del Río and the Port of Veracruz have

diverse hotel infrastructure. Most of the 4 and 5 star

hotels are in Boca Del Río, and they offer all the comfort

expected from their class. In the Port of Veracruz there

La historia de este edificio va unida a la de Veracruz,

ya que desde sus inicios ha sido protagonista de

muchos sucesos importantes. Desde la llegada de

los españoles en 1518, el islote fue nombrado por

Juan de Grijalva quien arribó en el día de San Juan

Bautista, de allí surge el origen del nombre. Su

construcción se realizó entre los siglos XVI y XVIII

utilizando en su mayoría piedra mucara de los

arrecifes al carecer de piedras en la región.

The history of this building is linked to the history

of Veracruz, because from its beginnings it has

been a player in many important events. From

the arrival of the Spanish in 1518, the island was

named by Juan Girjalva who arrived on the day of

Saint John the Baptist, thus the origin of its name.

The construction of the building was carried out

in the 16th. and 18th centuries, for the most part

using corral rocks from the surrounding reefs

because of a lack of stone in the region.

Over the years its function of protecting fort

became combined with that of troop barracks,

presidential palace and prison for personalities

such as the legendary Chucho el Roto and

important figures of Mexican history such as Friar

Servando Teresa de Mier and Mariano Abasolo.

A visit to this colonial fort takes us back in time

and allows us to understand a little about the

history of this beautiful port.

Su nombre proviene del Nahuatl que quiere decir “Veinte Aguas” ya que se encuentra rodeado por los

ríos de la región, es uno de los sitios arqueológicos más importantes del estado; cuenta con varios

edificios que aún hoy en día irradian una imponente belleza ( Templo Mayor, Templo de las Chimeneas,

Circulo de Gladiadores, Templo de las Caritas, Templo del Dios Viento, Templo de la Cruz ). El complejo

está rodeado por verdes prados y cocotales que dan al lugar ese misticismo de magnitud que nos evoca

a los tiempos en que funcionaba como segunda capital del imperio Totonaca, antes de ser dominada

por los Aztecas.

Se localiza a 43 Kms. del Puerto de Veracruz yendo hacia el norte. Al pasar la desviación a Cardel y

continuando sobre la autopista se encuentra una desviación hacia Tampico, su horario de visita es de

8 a 5:30 p.m.

that it evokes times when it functioned as a second capitol for the Totonaca Empire, before it was

the Cardel turnoff and continuing on the superhighway to the turnoff to Tampico, its schedule is fro

Fue el segundo asentamiento de la Villa Rica de la Veracruz,

se localiza a 25 Kms. al norte del Puerto por la autopista

a Xalapa, pasando la caseta de cobro doblando hacia la

izquierda. Dentro de sus recintos más importantes se

encuentra la casa de Hernán Cortés, rodeada por grandes

árboles y raíces que le dan un toque místico al lugar, el

cual aún cuenta con restos de lo que algún día fueron

parte de la estructura original, su cuarto, el pozo, el patio

central y lo que alguna vez fue el horno de pan, son

algunos de los elementos de la casa que podemos ver;

todo está cubierto por la sombra de las palmeras y árboles

que forman parte de la historia de esta antigua casa colonial.

La Antigua was the second settlement of the Villa Rica de la Veracruz. It is located 25 kms. to the

north of the Port on the highway to Xalapa, passing the toll booth and turning left. Within its most

important sites is the house of Hernán Cortés, surrounded by huge trees and roots that give a touch

of the mysterious to the place, which still has parts of the original structure, his room, the well the

central patio and what once was the clay oven for baking bread. These are just some of the elements

The fauna is typical of the region. A great variety of reptiles and birds can be observed in its natural areas. JAMAPA RIVER AND MANDINGO SWAMP

The Jamapa River is synonymous with live and

color, that is what this tour represents, the launch

from the cooperative will take us to the place

where the Moreno river joins the Jamapa and

where the “Isla de los Pajaros” will show us why

its called “Bird Island” with its wide variety of birds

that visit this zone. La “Pequeña Venecia” (Little

Venice) is a part of the tour where we can observe

In the swamps we can see the marvel of the

Puerto Escondido is the oldest tourist center in the

region, formerly known as Punta Escondida.

It was a fishermen village with a jetty for the

shipment of coffee from nearby places, which

allowed for a significant commercial activity.

Huatulco's LocationHuatulco Bays are located along the coast of

Oaxaca, at the end of the Southern Sierra Madre

mountains, stretching over 35 kilometers along

the Mexican Pacific Ocean's seashore, between

the Coyula and Copalita River mouths.

Because of its geographic location, the Huatulco

Bays topography is formed by mountains, valleys

and slopes and is quite rough and uneven. The

land formations are irrigated by the Coyula, San

Agustín and Copalita Rivers, giving a very special

touch to the magnificent landscape where the

nine beautiful bays are located.

Las Bahías de Huatulco se localizan en la costa de

Oaxaca, enclavadas en las estribaciones finales de

la Sierra Madre del Sur. Abarcan 35 Kilómetros

del litoral del Pacífico Mexicano, entre las

desembocaduras de los ríos Coyula y Copalita.

Dadas las condiciones geográficas en las que se

encuentran las Bahías de Huatulco, su topografía

es accidentada por montañas, valles y laderas,

siendo irrigada por los ríos Coyula, San Agustín y

Copalita, lo que da un especial matiz al paisaje tan

majestuoso en el que se encuentran las 9 hermosas
