MILKYI was a third year high school student. I was deeply in love with my high school sweetheart (one whom I courted for four years and was with for three years after; and one na iniwan ako for someone else during Secretary's Cup. *but that's another story* (and yes, siya yung dahilan ng mga hugot ko)

She asked me to join a debate tournament in the region and of course, I took the opportunity to team up with her. We reached the finals despite having no experience and no one to teach us about parliamentary debating; and I was awarded as one of the Top Ten Best Speakers and the Best Junior Debater of that time. *subtle tieback*

I was not really planning on pursuing my college debate career but I felt like I needed something to impress her parents. In the end, I lost sight of what I was fighting for and lost her along the process. Charot. But yeah, love brought me to debate ;)

What brought you to debate?

What was your most thrilling moment in a round?

Maybe not when I'm debating, but when I watch my kids in a final round and they say something worth shouting "Hear Hear!"

If ako talaga, siguro nung Opp Whip ako ng MINT Octos tapos Gov Whip si Sharms. Good luck sakin diba.

What was your most stressful moment in a round?

It was Union Cup Finals in 2012 (Iloilo). Nights before that, I tasked Darwin (my team mate) to read up on the Bangsamoro because it was a hot issue by then. When the round was drawn, we got OG. I would be speaking as Prime Minister and I was so excited/competitive because it was my first Finals speech and I was sure we were prepared. I was discussing the team case with him on stage while prepping. I sort of snapped at him cause he didn't get the argument I was giving him to extend on; tapos nagtampo siya and biglang tumalikod while murmuring "Ikaw kasi hindi ka nagbasa e."

Nakakaloka! But eventually we fixed it and moved on with the round.

Earphones, wala.

What brought you to debate?

What was your most stressful moment in a round?

What was your most thrilling moment in a round?

It was serendipitous really. I was in my freshman year introduction to economics class in Benilde

where we had a split-class debate on whether technology has done more harm than good. A good ten minutes in I asked why everyone assumes that

it's the stone age vs. modern society instead of an assessment of reality. My professor, Ms. Martinez (a former UST deabater in her time!) suggested

that I sign up for the team. I waved my pep squad pom poms goodbye and was judging at PIDC 2011 three days later.

I never looked back.

I get really bad nosebleeds during the summer, and PIDC 2014 was right in the middle of the summer heat wave. I had a massive nosebleed during Day 2 of rounds and I had to use a maxi pad to control all the bleeding.

What's even more stressful is that my partners kept making horrible "english = nosebleed" jokes.

This was during the first Philippine Debate Open (maybe Semis?). Mark and I had an extremely crazy prop on OG on setting a cap and

alternative to the number of people incarcerated in state prisons. We were crazy anxious as to how IIUM 1 would take it on OO.

"A debate idol would have the wit of Carlito Reyes, the fierceness of Victor Baguilat, the budol-budol skills of Dino de Leon, the fashion sense of Jake Bustos,

and the face of Adriana Lima." 4

What other accomplishments do you have, outside of debate?

woodchuck mo ng wood.

Naghanap lang ako ng life meaning and ayun.

We had this one round in an international tournament where we just came in when the round was just about to start. We just learned the motion then and still debated as government. Stress pero oks lang kasi we won haha.

My first PIDC Semifinals appearance. The place, our opponents, the motion, the crowd and then standing there in the podium for my speech. Grabe it really overwhelmed my senses!

JOSE[Day 0]I was pulled out of my Karate-do training to complete our Juniors Debate team for an inter-level competition. We lost to the Seniors--who left envelopes on the judges' table filled with articles favorable to their stance.#Foul #WeGotServed

After that event, the organizer (turned coach) decided to form our school's debate team composed of the level representatives... and yes, the seniors were there too. #Mature

[Fast Forward]So after being excused from classes to join debate competitions, which also meant we were excused from quizzes and assignments, I realized that debate could be my life's mission.

What brought you to debate?

What was your most stressful moment in a round?

What was your most thrilling moment in a round?

One time, feeling ko najejebs ako.

Hindi pala ako najejebs, malamig lang pala.

What's your favorite position?

What other accomplishments do you have, outside of debate?

I helped an elderly lady cross the road... sa may Commonwealth.

Deputy. It's hard. ;)

Page 12: PIDC 2016 AdjCore Zine

What makes a good debate?

Responsive and acknowledges good points of the other side instead of misrepresenting them. } INAH

Good prep, and actually having the x-number of arguments you said you had. JOSE {

Hard principles with very long analysis. Dapat swabe yung pasok ng frame palagi and may rhythm sa pag-deliver ng arguments and responses. On a serious note though, I think it's when teams try to be comparative with each other and engage each other's frames in their best case scenario.

CHARLES}I think what makes a good debate is one which places debaters in the shoes of the people they are talking about. It's that debate which will transcend beyond the sport and motivate you to change the world that we have. As debaters, I think we have the duty to speak for those who cannot and argue for those who cannot. For me, that's a good debate, a venue where feelings are put into words and where properly placed in an organized fashion.

MILKY {

At the heart of it, I like to think of debate as a truth-seeking sport. The intellectual rigor it takes for people to come up

with rich analysis , and present it in a way which is accessible to anyone who is listening is one hell of a balancing act. This

talent of sorts is what makes some rounds unforgettable

How do you matterload?

Subscribe to the Economist, get news apps, go to lots of talks.INAH {

Googling to the nth page until I find gold. } JOSE

Mag-reflect sa mga bagay bagay habang stuck ako sa traffic.CHARLES {

The most effective method of matterloading for me is of course reading motions and researching matter relevant to those topics. I was never a reader but when I joined Parl, I understood that you will never survive without reading so I started with the things I am most interested and curious about. I started with reading the entire Wikipedia article (and related articles) about the Israel-Palestine conflict. Then branched out from there. My favorite method would be asking your debate crush what she's most interested in and looking it up so that you have a conversation starter ;)

MILKY}Journals and films! Favorites include the

Journal of Conflict Studies, Journal of Social Psychology, and Milk (2008).

I don't know. Seriously. But maybe our generation can shape a community which looks at debate as a critical and progressive discussion more than it being a competitive sport. But if I were to die, and there would be a Milky Babilonia Cup, I would love to give it to someone who improved the most.Milky

CharlesSiguro na people can say that I've always been fair with my dealings with everyone and na I was able to be instrumental in making the debate community a richer (hindi fiscally ah) and more inclusive place.

AviI want to shed some light on who we are as people, that's all.
