“The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve…whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant.” If you were asked if you would like to have a servant at no charge, probably most of you would accept such a gift. You know from movies or books that a servant is someone who does things for you…in fact, a servant does a lot of things for you that you would rather not do for yourself, like cleaning up after you, taking out the garbage, getting the meals ready and washing up afterwards, and other such things that many people do not enjoy doing. Is this the model of servant that we are to follow when we hear these words of Jesus that he came “not to be served but to serve”? Are we called to do things for other people that they should be doing for themselves? This was not the way that Jesus carried out his servanthood.

Jesus was a real service to others. His service was of the kind that helped people in situations where they really needed his help. You notice that Jesus never performed miracles just out of convenience. He did not do things for other people to save them from a little inconvenience in their lives. Nor did he do things for other people so that they would come to admire and follow him.

These are important clues to our Christian notion of servanthood. Being a servant does not mean just doing things for other people. A person who is always doing things for others may just be satisfying his/her own need for approval and acceptance. So this person is always there, ready to do things for you that you should be doing for yourself, and they do this because they crave your approval. Sometimes, this is not a real way to help others. In fact, it may be a way to harm others. An agency that serves people in the developing countries has the following slogan: “Give a man fish and you feed him for a day. Teach the man to fish and you feed him for life.” It is not hard to judge who serves the poor better – the one who gives the fish does a good work, but the one who teaches others how to fish does a better work. This type of service gives people power to take charge of their own lives. Today is the Mission Sunday. It should be a day when we think about the great gift of faith that we have received and about how we have been asked by Christ himself to pass this faith on to others. Throughout our long history as a Church, we have constantly been trying to share our faith with those who have never heard of Christ, or who have never been given a chance to come to know the life and teachings of Christ. If there were no Church, we would all be so much poorer. We would be without the guidance and encouragement that we all need in order to live as God wishes us to. As we all know so well, gifts are meant to be shared. Through our prayers and our personal and financial support of the missionaries of our Church, we can also call ourselves missionaries. St. Therese of Lisieux, a cloistered Carmelite nun, was named as patron of the Missions because she had such a deep desire to bring the message of Christ to the whole world. Let us follow the example of St. Therese!

    HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR!

  • The weekend of October 20-21, 2018, is part two of our series which seeks

to bring greater understanding and awareness to the six

    “Themes of Stewardship.”

Stewardship begins with gratitude to God for everything we have

    received from Him.

We express our thanksgiving by giving back to God a portion of His gifts through the 6 themes of

Prayer, Service, Faith, Vocations, Generosity, and Earth. THEME TWO: SERVICE When we talk about giving talent, sadly, some parishioners may feel that they have no unique or special talent to share with their parish.

When we talk about service we are sending out a message that says,

“All are invited. All are needed. All have something to give.” It is important to remember that our service in the parish and community must start with our participation in the Eucharist. If we are not in communion with Our Lord and our parish family, then we may be great volunteers, but we are not really Christian stewards. We may be involved in activities that please us, benefit us or give us fulfillment, but we may not be involved in the most important things. We may not be putting God in the center of all of our busyness.

  • Gracious God, Giver of life and source of freedom,

I know that all I have received is from you. You call us to be stewards of Your abundance, the caretakers of all you have entrusted to us.

Help us to always use Your gifts wisely and teach us to share them generously.

Send the Holy Spirit to work through us, bringing Your message to those we serve. May our faithful stewardship bear witness

to the love of Christ in our lives. We pray with grateful hearts in Jesus’ name.

    Amen.

Holy Spirit is a vibrant parish which strives to serve the needs of a richly diverse population. There are many ways to be involved and give back to God. Read more about the ministries listed below (and many others) in our parish directory or on our website, and prayerfully consider how you and your family can practice the Stewardship of Service.
