What’s in a name? The Feast of Christ the King Like it or not, the language of our faith has a long-standing tradition of calling Jesus, King. We can understand what the title meant to our ancestors in faith who did not know of democracy, only of a single ruling authority. This feast though asks us “Who do we give power to?” Even more important, we know that the question of who has power over us is now and always a perennial issue. As disciples of Christ we pledge allegiance, first of all, to the reign of God in our lives. This entails hailing the role that Jesus plays in our lives. Is Jesus Christ first and foremost in our lives? Gathered in Hebron three thousand years ago, the tribal elders pledged themselves as David's flesh and bone. When we gather at Eucharist, Jesus draws us into an even greater solidarity with him, including the call to build his Kingdom. We pledge to be Christ to those we encounter. At our baptism we are anointed priest, prophet and king. This anointing recognizes that we are joined to the threefold mission of Jesus, as we are called to be priest, prophet and king. This has powerful implications for our lives as family members, as coworkers, and as citizens. In my embrace of the Jesus as King I have also come to embrace that I am part of the kin-dom of Christ. Kin-dom is a word that reflects the kin of the King, or in other words, those of us who call ourselves Christians. We are Christ’s kin. The Kingdom of Christ is a shared community of equals who serve each other under the Kin-dom of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ mission was to have God reign in the hearts of all and to spread peace and justice in the world. Our responsibility as kin is to be this gift of God to others and to creation. I pray for us this Thanksgiving week, “Christ, help us carry out your mission that we may be worthy kin in your Kingdom”.

Cristo Rey ¿Qué hay en un nombre? La fiesta que celebramos hoy se llama Cristo Rey. Nos guste o no, el lenguaje de nuestra fe tiene una larga tradición de calificar a Jesús como “rey”. Ciertamente podemos entender lo que el título significaba para nuestros antepasados en la fe, ellos que no tenían experiencia de la democracia. Sin embargo, esta fiesta nos plantea la pregunta "¿A quién le debemos autoridad?". Aún más importante, qué significa reconocer la autoridad de otra persona? Es un tema importante y perenne.

Como discípulos de Cristo, prometemos lealtad, en primer lugar, al reino de Dios en nuestras vidas. Esto implica reconocer el rol central que Jesús juega en nuestras vidas diarias. ¿Es Jesucristo lo primero y lo más importante en tu vida? Reunidos en Hebrón hace tres mil años, los ancianos tribales se comprometieron como carne y hueso de David. Y hoy, cuando nosotros nos reunimos en la Eucaristía, Jesús nos lleva a una solidaridad aún mayor con él; de hecho, nos involucra en su misión de construir el reino de Dios. Nos comprometemos a ser Cristo para aquellos con quienes nos encontramos.

En nuestro bautismo somos ungidos sacerdote, profeta y rey. Esta unción reconoce que estamos unidos a la triple misión de Jesús, ya que estamos llamados a ser sacerdote, profeta y rey. La misión de Jesús consiste en hacer que Dios reine en los corazones de todos y difundir la paz y la justicia en el mundo.

The Solemnity of Christ the King On the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King. Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas Primas (“In the first”) to respond to growing nationalism and secularism. He recognized that these related societal ills would breed increasing hostility against the Church. His encyclical reminds the faithful that wile governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns as king forever. The Kingdom is Holistic Secularism divides our public selves from our private selves. When governments limit the rights of religious ministries, secularists claim that religious freedom is not harmed because we still have freedom of worship – we are free in private but not in public. But the kingdom of God calls us to a whole life of worship and service in the public square. We cannot worship on Sunday and then deny Christ's teaching in the way we run our ministries throughout the week. Nationalism, on the other hand, divides our loyalties. It is good to love one's country, but ultimate loyalty is due only to Christ and his kingdom. Ideologies that ask us to put our nation above Christ and his Church are incompatible with service to the kingdom. The Kingdom Demands Discipleship We must work every day, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to draw closer to Jesus. In our own increasingly "post-Christian" society, we cannot be complacent in our spiritual lives. To acknowledge the kingship of Christ means that we should dedicate ourselves to prayer, to building up our families and our parish communities, and to bringing healing to a broken world.

The Kingdom is Humble Jesus inaugurates a kingdom that grows through humble acts of service. Even as her freedom to carry out her ministries is threatened, the Church must patiently continue to serve the poor, educate the young, welcome the migrant, visit the prisoner, heal the sick, bury the dead, and love others. La solemnidad de Cristo Rey El último domingo de cada año litúrgico, la Iglesia celebra la solemnidad de Cristo Rey. El Papa Pío XI instituyó esta fiesta en 1925 con su encíclica Quas Primas ("En el primero") para responder al creciente nacionalismo y secularismo. Reconoció que estas enfermedades sociales relacionadas engendrarían una hostilidad creciente contra la Iglesia. Su encíclica recuerda a los fieles que mientras los gobiernos y las filosofías van y vienen, Cristo reina como rey para siempre.

El reino es holístico El secularismo divide nuestro ser público de nuestro ser privado. IT’S THE GIVING SEASON! This week we will celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a time to express our gratitude for what has been given to us. At Ignatian Services we are grateful to all our supporters who generously give of their treasure. Last week’s collection amounted to $1,604. Your generosity allows us to be the angels in our clients’ lives, providing for them when they have a need. Our donors are not looking for recognition they are only looking to help a neighbor in need. We are grateful to all our volunteers whether they unload our deliveries or work with our families. Volunteers are a vital link in our food chain! May you all have a truly blessed Thanksgiving. Thank you again to LU Campus Ministry and Sacred Heart School! This past week students from Sacred Heart School delivered move than a van full of food for the food pantry! There were bags and bags of cereal that will help us feed the needy in our community. The students also helped us sort and stock the 1,100 pounds of food that LU Campus Ministry collected from students and Rogers Park neighbors. We are grateful to both for their continued support of our mission.

THANKSGIVING RESERVATIONS ARE DUE TODAY! Please make your reservations for our Thanksgiving dinner today. You can stop by the rectory after mass. The doors to the Holy Name Room will open at 11:00 am after mass. Dinner will be served at 11:30 am. This dinner is geared towards those who cannot provide for their family or those who would be by themselves. All are welcome.
