humanos.

FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY

The Holy Family Of Jesus, Mary and Joseph is the model for all families, the "icon" of the family. The family of our Lord is holy, not only because Jesus is the God-Man and Mary is an immaculate creature, and Joseph a Saint, but also because of their love for and obedience to God's plan and their service of one another. Every family, according to God's plan, begins in the bond of a man-husband and a woman-wife, who share in an exclusive and life-long com-mitment. In responsible parenthood the married man and woman preserve the right of every child to be brought into the world within this bond of one man and one woman. Today the family is the subject of social manipulation and experimentation, a tragedy with far-reaching implications. We may use the name 'family' to describe whatever we please, but God has made plain, through Jesus, Mary and Joseph, his will for every fami-ly. Every child has a right to enjoy the security of committed love and consistent example, both of a man-father and a woman-mother. If any woman was capable of running a household singlehandedly, our Lady was, and God might very well have asked Mary to go it alone, but he didn't. He called on Joseph to marry, love and protect our Lady and to be the foster-father of the God-Man, Jesus. God de-mands that each child have the gift of an authentic family life. Under God's law, every child has a right to be naturally conceived. The di-vine Artisan has crafted man and woman such that they are capable together of bringing new life about in a manner particular and never to be replaced. The child-yet-to-be-conceived depends completely upon the holy cooperation of man and woman with God in this re-gard. In a beautiful address on December 28, 2011, at his Wednesday audience, Pope Benedict XVI spoke of the life of the Holy Family in Nazareth. Here is a short excerpt: "The house of Nazareth is a school of prayer where we learn to listen, to meditate, to penetrate the deep-est meaning of the manifestation of the Son of God, drawing our example from Mary, Joseph and Jesus. "The Holy Family is an icon of the domestic Church, which is called to pray together. The family is the first school of prayer where, from their infancy, children learn to perceive God thanks to the teaching and example of their parents. An authentically Christian education cannot neglect the experience of prayer. If we do not learn to pray in the family, it will be difficult to fill this gap later. I would, then, like to invite people to rediscover the beauty of praying together as a family, following the school of the Holy Family of Nazareth". The Christian family is the first cell of the whole Church. It is the place where we begin the journey toward holiness and become more fully human.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY FAMILY

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, In you we contemplate the splendor of true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience vio-lence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandal-ized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer!
