Feliz y positivo 2008!Miguel Zabala Bishop

This year we will continue to grow and that is the main challenge that the staff of Mi Tierra magazine has for 2008, which promises to be a very dynamic year in the tour-ist industry and above all in the world wide aeronautical
industry. For that reason we will impart good vibes to our work in order to be in touch with our public, you our readers and advertis-ers to whom we owe the success of our efforts.
In Bolivia things may not seem very clear, but what is clear is that the tourism market and above all the airlines will have a posi-tive shake up with the entry of new companies, domestically and internationally. We do not doubt that this coming year we will see competition which will bring favorable prices for the public, with special offers and above all the introduction of new sales technol-ogy which will place us on the same footing as the markets in the United States and Europe.
There is no doubt that low cost airlines have revolutionized the market and brought down prices, according to the Interna-tional Airline Transportation Agency (IATA), and that all airlines have adapted to a market that not only wants security but also low prices, and as incredible as it may seem with all the new technol-ogy, also excellent customer service!
In this area, we are clear that the traveler is our main objective. For that reason we support SABSA, the administrator of the three principle Bolivian airports, in their expansion and growth plans. This year we will see growth and improvements in the appearance of the most important airports in Bolivia: Viru Viru in Santa Cruz, and El Alto in La Paz, with important investments on the part of SABSA, which not only will change their appearances but will also convert them into first class airports with the latest technology and appropriate areas for the comfort of passengers and all members of the aeronautical community. In 2008 Bolivia will experience a new facet of growth in its airports and Mi Tierra magazine will keep apace of this process.
Finally, we will continue to offer you the best reading material in magazines of our type. We know that by rewarding us with your readership, you are rewarding our efforts as reporters, designers, photographers, and the rest of the staff of BZ Designers that works quietly behind the scenes, that is why we promise, dear readers, to try even harder to bring you a world class magazine, made in Bolivia!
Happy and Positive 2008!Miguel Zabala Bishop

It also
has European paintings and sculptures from classical Greece, Roman period and middle ages, which make up only part of the magnificent repertoire of the Met.

What we know today as the Octagonal courtyard is the origins of the Vatican Museum. There, Pope Julius II, in 1503, transformed the courtyard of the Belve-dere Palace of Innocent VIII into a garden deco-rated with the sculptures of Apollo, the Joyous Venus, the Laocoonte group, the Nile, Tiber, and Arianne sleeping, which was called the sculpture garden. During the following 200 years many more objects
were added, to later be organized under different popes, the museum is a testament “to the truth of religion through the sacred art of Christianity” (Benedict XIV). In that way, we now have the Pius-Clement Museum,
the Etruscan Museum, the Egyptian Museum, the Lateran Profane Museum, as well as the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms, Pinacoteca and
Ethnological Missionary Museum.

With 8.3 million visitors in 2006, the Louvre is the most visited museum in the world. The Palais du Louvre is a gigantic museum of universal art created during the French Enlightenment, which started out as a medieval fortress, of which the
foundations still remain and also part of the moat. The last remodel-ing, which added the glass pyramid by designer I. M. Pei to the front entrance, was completed in 1989.
The collections of the Louvre come from different sources, such
as the royal collections (among the French monarchs the following stand out: Francis I, Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI), the French Revolution (which obtained works of art for the state through different means: closing monasteries, and valuables left behind by fleeing aristocrats), the Napoleonic Wars (the armies decommissioned works of art in the conquered countries), and donations during the XIX and XX centuries. The Louvre is the keeper of the most enigmatic smile of all times: the famous Gioconda or Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Location: Madrid, Spain / opening: November 19, 1819 / collection: 2 million pieces / highlights: El Caballero de la mano en el pecho by El Greco, La Sagrada Familia, known as ‘La Perla’, by Raphael, the Self Portrait by Durero, Las Meninas by Velázquez, The Three Graces by Rubens or The family of Carlos IV by Goya.
The building that gathers these masterpieces, was designed in 1785 by order of Charles III, but it was not until 1819 that it opened its doors as a museum due to the efforts of his grandson, Ferdinand VII, encouraged by his queen Maria Isabel of Braganza.
The majority of the pieces making up the permanent collection proceed from the Spanish monarchy. They were gathered during three centuries by the kings of Spain to decorate their palaces and country homes, such as the Alcázar, Pardo, the Torre de la Parada, Buen Retiro, La Granja de San Ildefonso and Aranjuez, as well as the monasteries of Yuste and the Escorial.
The Museum of the Prado houses the largest collection of masterpieces by Goya (120 paintings), Titian (30), El Greco (35), Patinar,
Rubens (around 80) and Velázquez (45 of the 100 catalogued), among others.
Among its collec-tions, the collection of Spanish painters, which ranges from Roman-esque murals of the XII
century until the end of the XIX century (including medieval, renais-sance, mannerist and baroque paintings) stands out.

Galleria degli Uffizi (italian) or Gallery of works was built between 1560 and 1581 as the offices of the Flo-rentine magistrates once the Palazzo Vecchio became too small. Its installations, however, also served as storerooms for works of art belonging to the Medici family. After the decline of the illustrious family, the Uffizi Palace opened its doors as a museum in 1765.
The art collection displayed in the hallways of the Uffizi is very vast; there are works that are not on display, due to lack of space. Every year thousands of people stand in long lines to ad-mire the marvels that rest inside this palace, among which are the Birth
of Venus by Botticelli and numerous works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Rubens, and Caravaggio.
Currently the Florentine museum runs the risk of closing due to budget cutbacks to several ministries, among them the ministries of art and culture.

Marc Chagall, Kan-dinsky, Mondrian, Henri Matisse, etc.
The Museum of Modern Art, or simply MoMA, was created to bring together the best works of modern art belonging to the masters of the vanguard movement of the XX century. Its policy, back then, was to gather on the one hand masterpieces and also works representative of current artists that showed promise and lacked recognition; thanks to this policy the MoMA today has the most important work of art in modern art history.
The pieces collected in the art collection come to about 100,000, including paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, photographs, design objects, architectural plans, and even movies. Postimpression-ism, cubism, abstract expressionism are the styles which have set the
trend. Among the earliest collec-tions are works by Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Henri Matisse, etc.

The Georges Pompidou Art and Cultural Center was built during the government of French president Georges Pompidou, who died before the building was completed, in 1977. It was designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rog-ers in a modern concept that created great controversy in the 1970s: it has a square shape, an industrial look with functional elements (ducts, stairs, etc.) visible from the exterior. It was one of the first buildings of the high tech architectural school.
One of its most distinguishing features, is that the water, air and electrical ducts were painted in daring, bright, luminous colors and placed on the outside of the building to leave a very clean interior. Today this building enjoys great popular approval and is known for its library with 2000 reading tables, Movie Theater, and a research center for music, library science, etc.

Located in the Province of Velasco, in the northeast of the Department of Santa Cruz, the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, borders with the Iténez and Verde Rivers and with the
states of Rondonia and Matto Grosso of Brazil. It has an area of 1,523,446 hectares. The area belongs
to the Amazon basin and is nourished by the Paraguá and Verde Rivers, that are tributaries of the Guaporé River, and whose waters flow to
the Mamoré River, which later merges with the majestic Madeira River in Brazil.
Frequently, urban man associates well being with nature. This as-sociation has led him try to spend an important part of his free time in contact with the nature from which he is ever more distanced. In this issue, Mi Tierra shows you that this association can become reality in the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park in Bolivia, a place where the Amazon jungles come together with the dry forests and savannahs, add to this the large area of protected territory, the degree of conserva-tion and the high level of biodiversity and it becomes an important biological reserve of world wide status.
This extremely rich region of the planet, owes its name to the dis-tinguished Bolivian biologist murdered in the highlands of Huanchaca in 1986. In 2000, due to its condition as a protected area of world wide value, it was declared by UNESCO a Natural Heritage of Humanity site; an area that has very little human intervention and conservation of all its elements and natural processes (except for tourism and recreational activities, and non manipulative investigation and for ecological education), even though the area is already feeling the pressures of human colonizers, who have very little environmental consciousness, in the area.

Throughout his life he spearheaded the study and conservation of nature in Bo-livia as a beekeeper (he was president of the Bee Society of Bolivia), as a professor at the Autonomous University Gabriel René Moreno, as director of the Botanical Garden and Zoo of Santa Cruz and as director of Parks and Gardens of the municipality.
Noel Kempff was assassinated by drug traffickers in the
mountains of Huanchaca, along with two of his colleagues, in the course of an investigation he was conducting. The plane in which he was travelling landed by mistake at an airstrip used by drug traffickers, and all the occupants except one were shot. The murder of Noel Kempff shocked Bolivian society and marked a turning point in the fight against drug trafficking in the country. The Huanchaca park was renamed in his honor.

The Rainbow (Arco Iris) water fall has a drop of 88 meters and is located on the Pauserna River where it meats the Caparuch Plateau
From above you can distinguish the beautiful highlands that become a well defined plateau covered with vegeta-tion, with a humid sub tropical climate. Like two jewels, the impressive water falls of Arco Iris and Ahlfleld adorn this park.
The protected area of the park has two tourist units: Flor de Oro, with capacity for 35 persons, includes galler-ies, dining hall, information office and visitors center, observation tower, and river docks and a landing strip; Los Fier-ros, has capacity for 40 persons and also offers visitors comfortable rustic cabins.
This Eden like place is not a just a display case of wild species, but also
a storage house of natural resources of all types (water, timber, food, and oxygen). According to the website www.ecoportal.net of the Andean Develop-ment Corporation (CAF), it is estimated that 7 million tons of carbon dioxide is off set by the Noel Kempff Mercado Na-tional Park. This “environmental service” negates the effects of the green house effect, making this park one of the most important environmental filters in the planet.
With its 15,234 km 2, the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is a sanctuary of natural biodiversity, which is being threatened by the destructive encroachment of man.

As far as birds, 620 species are known, among which are the turkeys, macaws, parrots, toucans, hawks, quails, gulls, tapacarés, herons, ducks, cormorants, fisher kings, and many other species that are in danger of extinction and are the subjects of studies by national and international organizations.
In the park over 62 species of amphibians have also been identified, the most remarkable are the fresh water dolphins or bufeo. Although fish are the vertebrates least studied in the area, a recent registry catalogued 250 species of fish.
According to studies, it is estimated that in the park there are over 4,000 species of plants, but the most obvious to the naked eye are, with out doubt, the great variety of orchids, bro-meliads, passion flowers, heliconias, araceas and palms.
Also, it is rich in hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, cedar, rubber, and several species of palms including: asai, motacucillo, pachiuva, and royal palms. However this asset makes the park more vulnerable to the presence of the human scavengers that destroy important areas for economic profit, wounding to death the natural sanctuary.

The largest celebration in Eastern Bolivia
Carnival in Santa Cruz
For over a hundred years, the inhabit-ants of the eastern city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, as well as its provinces, fill the streets of their towns and
cities with music, paint and water games, in a unique celebration of the Greek carnes-tolenda which has the purpose of relieving pressures and give free rein to exuber-ance, dance, and above all to friendships through the traditional “comparsas” a type of fraternity.

Tourist who arrive in Santa Cruz during these holidays will be amazed at all the folks running around in colorful costumes and with their faces painted, and will also be targets for attacks with water and paint. This is all normal and common practice during the three days of Carnival, during which most of the population comes out to the streets and dances to the music of the bands and the folk groups called “tamboritas”, and give loose reins to joy.
This celebration is not a tourist event that can be enjoyed from a grandstand, except for the “corso” (a parade with al-legorical floats) that takes place the first day of Carnival down a main avenue of the city, where the “comparsas” dance in groups around allegorical floats and drench the onlookers with foam, and paint and offer to share their drinks. This is a party to be enjoyed on the streets by participating, because otherwise it is difficult to understand and may even be uncomfortable for people that do not enjoy the high jinx of being painted differ-ent colors and being drenched from head to foot.
However, many tourists have opted for participating in the local carnival, because they feel they can express themselves freely by dancing in the streets to the live music and without any restrictions, except moral ones.
The cruceño carnival is nothing more than just a small town street party; a joyful gathering in which groups of friends play tricks on each other and have a good time. The Santa Cruz Carnival is different from other carnivals in the country, as well as other places around the world, because anyone can partici-pate without belonging to a group or organization. It is simply a street party and joining this party is easy, because the people of Santa Cruz are friendly and open and are known for their hospitality, human warmth, joie de vivre and sense of humor.
paint, water, and joy do not discriminate in the street party in downtown Santa cruz. The street celebration belongs to everyone!

The “corso”
Is a parade that lasts more than six hours in which allegorical floats depict universal themes, but above all else are known for their satirical look at the current political situation or depict the native culture of the region.
The “corso”, often confused with the parades of the Escolas de Samba in Rio de Janeiro which take place at the Sambodromo, is nothing more than a parade of the “comparsas” (traditional gatherings of friends of the same age), in which men and women dressed in colorful costumes, often representing a cultural theme, dance and sing along the entire two kilometers, while the public watches and participates or interacts along the entire route with the “comparsas”.
Through the years, the parade has exhibited the different stages of progress in Santa Cruz and has even spread to the provinces, where smaller parades are put on with the same fervor and with strong cultural significance. During the last years, the “corso” has has focused on local cul-ture and tradition, featuring the native costumes, music, popular games, and native expressions of local indig-enous people and also some satirical representations of the current political situation, as well as exhibiting the potential for progress of the economy and region.
The carnival of santa Cruz has no equal, it is a cultural mani-festation of its inhabitants.

Like all popular festivals around the world, the carnival has a queen or sovereign that presides over the festivities, usually selected for her beauty, but also because of her joyful personality and the ability to connect with the public and the media, with whom she has constant contact the months leading to the carnival celebration, in a variety of activities sponsored by the crowning “comparsa” and the local officials of the community where the carnival takes place.
However, the most important event for the queen is her own coronation and the “corso” where she is accompanied by her “com-parsa” and her court made up of the sovereigns of the other hundreds of “comparsas” that participate officially in the event.
It is traditional that the coronation take place during a special event where a show is put on based on historical events or local tradi-tion, highlighting the most important events of carnival, mixing every-day characters with those from oral tradition and popular mythology. The stage fills with dozens of actors, many of them amateurs acting for the first time and members of the crowning “comparsa”, accompanied by professional actors who take the main roles in a show full of lights, music, dance, and narration, that can last up to three hours.
However you look at it, the carnival of Santa Cruz has much to of-fer, but it must be understood in its true cultural dimensions, as a local expression of popular culture that requires you participate rather than observe from the sidelines. This carnival is a celebration of groups of friends and is part of the essence of this region of Bolivia full of warmth and joy.
Costumes and dances that reflect the native culture stand out in the “corso”.

DiabetesKnow the enemy
During the last commemoration of the Worldwide Diabetes Day (November 14, 2007), the Pan-American Health Organi-
zation announced: “Diabetes mellitus was in 2001 the fourth leading cause of death in Latin America, with an estimated 13.3 million persons affected. The projection for 2030 increases this number to 32.9 million”. It is clear that this metabolic disorder is present in alarming numbers. With this information, no one can afford to pass up the constant medical recom-mendations that emphasize that the key to preventing health complications is to be aware of the disease and obtain treatment.

For this reason, Mi Tierra contacted a renowned endocrinologist Douglas Villarroel, at the Galene Integrated Medical Center, for whom the approach to controlling the disease is mainly educating his patients. “Education about diabetes is the best defense we have for controlling this disease that is fast becoming an epidemic in Bolivia. For that reason a good understanding of the type of diabetes you have will allow you to treat it correctly”, explained the specialist, and proceeds to describe the differences between type one and other types of diabetes:
DiabeTes Type 1
Diabetes type 1, previously called “insulin dependent”, is an auto-immune system disease that appears in children and adolescents and as the final phase of beta attack of the pancreas; persons stop producing insulin and require that insulin be injected in order to live. At the time of the diagnosis, the patient feels thirsty and has excessive urina-tion, has lost weight and his or her blood sugar levels are very high.

DIABETES TIpO 2
DiabeTes Type 2
Diabetes type 2, formerly called “non-insulin dependent”, is described as the elevation of blood sugar levels in persons over age 40 who are overweight, sedentary, or have a family history of this type of diabetes. When the diagnosis takes place it is possible that the patient may exhibit no symptoms or they might be slight, such as: blurred vision, excessive thirst, and a frequent need to urinate. The patient continues to manufac-ture insulin, but the level of insulin is not sufficient to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Treatments for diabetes type 2 vary between diet, exercise, medication and or insulin. The persons with this type of diabetes that use insulin, do not become “in-sulin dependent” or diabetes type 1. Only 30 to 40% of patients with diabetes type 2 use insulin, but continue to be non insulin dependent, and will survive if they stop taking insulin.
pre – DiabeTes
The inability to process carbohydrates or also called “pre-diabetes”, exists when the blood sugar levels are high, but not sufficiently high to be diagnosed as diabetes. This can cause damage to the cardiovascular system.
Secondary diabetes comes when a person has had their pancreas surgically removed, the organ that produces the insulin; due to pancreatis; due to damage caused by cortisone, in persons that have a genetic predisposition for diabetes and other diseases.

DIABETES gESTAcIONAL
GesTaTional DiabeTes
Gestational diabetes is that which develops during pregnancy in women; it is diagnosed between the 24th and 28th week of gestation. It is important to follow a strict diet and take insulin (when diet is not sufficient) to avoid problems during pregnancy and with the baby. If the baby’s birth weight is more than 4 kg, it probably suffered gestational diabetes. Many women normalize their blood sugar levels after they give birth.
It is called prior carbohydrate intolerance when a woman has suffered gestational diabetes and her blood sugar levels normalize after giving birth. It is very important, in this case, to maintain a healthy diet and exercise, because they run a greater risk of developing diabetes later on.

To avoiD complicaTions
With education it is possible to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes type 2, the most common type (90% of diabetics suffer this type), detect diabetes type 1, adequately control blood sugar levels, and above all, avoid complications of both type of diabetes.
Persons that suffer the illness should follow the following steps:1. Good control of blood glucose.2. Good control of blood pressure.3. Good control of cholesterol.4. Stop smoking, if they are smokers.5. Have an eye exam and kidney function examination (and if there are lesions due to diabetes, treat them early).6. Check your feet daily and notify your physician immediately if there are any problems.7. Learn everything about diabetes and be current on new treatments.
Persons that follow these steps, decrease their risk of developing complica-tions up to 85%, compared with persons that ignore these steps.
If a person is diagnosed with diabetes at age 30 and does not have good control, there is a 50% possibility that they will need laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy by age 45, and may develop diabetic neu-ropathy (a disease of the nervous system) by age 46, and require dialyses or a kidney transplant by age 47.
However, if the person receives a strict control of their diabetes, they can be assured they will have a comfortable life without complications or delay them 30 or 40 years.

Main porch or Darwaza measuring 30 mts high, symbol-izes the passage from the material to the spiritual.
A MONUMENT IN THE NAME OF LOVE
It was the year 1607 when the 20 year old prince Shahbuddin Mohammed Shah Jahan, heir to the Great Mughal Empire, met the Persian princess Arjumand Banu Begum in a bazaar, where a furtive glance was enough to fall madly in love. Five years later, during which time they were not allowed to see each other, Shah Jahan made Arjumand his second wife and his favorite among
his entire harem, even calling her Mumtaz Mahal, meaning “jewel of the palace”. History tells that the love they shared, over 19 years of marriage, never waned, to such a point that there were not days in the year to shower their love on each other.
In 1631, during the birth of the happy couple’s 14th son, there were complications and the smile of Shah Jahan was extinguished forever, because Mumtaz did not survive childbirth and died almost immediately.
For the Emperor, the loss of the “jewel of the palace” was extremely painful and unbearable, so much that he abandoned all the luxuries he enjoyed and dedicated his life wholeheartedly to building a mausoleum that represented the beauty, candor, and goodness of his favorite wife. In her honor, national mourning was decreed during two years.
Thus, with this bitter and romantic inspiration, the Taj Mahal was built over two long decades (between 1631 and 1654) to symbolize the eternal love of an emperor and great warrior, who according to the legend, died admiring his final resting place that he had built out of love for his soul mate.

SYMMETRIcAL LINES
The Taj Mahal is a complex of buildings that represents the most beautiful example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from traditional Islamic, Persian, Indian, and even Turkish architecture. It is located in Agra, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, on the shores of the Yamuna River, one of the seven sacred rivers of India.
Its design, of perfectly symmetrical lines, was the work of an architectural council directed by the Iranian Istad Usa, which drew its inspiration from the Timurid buildings (the dynasty established by Tamerlane during the XV century) and Mughal architecture, which used geometric designs to represent the perfection of heaven and transmit a feeling of harmony. Thus, the number four, a sacred number in Islam, was the basis of the entire design, so that the Taj Mahal can be appreciated from all four sides.

The temple achieves such beauty in part to the costly materials used to build it: white marble, precious and semi-precious stones incrusted in the interior and exterior of the tomb (lapis lazuli, jasper, malachite, turquoise, and carnelians), marked the new style imposed by Shah Jahan.
These materials were collected in all parts of India and from areas in Central Asia (such as Iraq, China, Afghanistan, Tibet, Egypt, Persia, Ye-men, Russia, and Ceylon) and a group of 1,000 elephants were needed to transport them; while 20,000 Hindu and Persian laborers were re-quired to build this masterpiece of art which took 23 years to complete.
The decorative elements were used repeatedly in the entire complex, unifying the aesthetic line of the temple, with perfect and exquisite symmetry. The only asymmetrical object in the Taj Mahal is

On both sides of the mausole-um there are identical buildings: to the west is a three domed mosque made of red sandstone and white marble; and to the east is an identical building called the echo of the mosque, because it is not used for worship because it faces the wrong direction and whose purpose is to simply maintain the symmetry.

the sarcophagus of the Emperor, which was built later so that he could rest next to his great love for eternity.
The complex is divided into two sections, to the north and south: the first section has a great sandstone gate which serves as entrance to the entire complex and is flanked by auxiliary buildings of uncertain use; in the second section, parallel to the Yamuna River, lays the mausoleum itself.
The Emperor reached the complex via the river, on a boat, along with his entourage; while the visitors had to enter through the great courtyard decorated with gardens and wide canals. These gates symbolized the Muslim world, since they represented the gates to heaven (they even have verses of the Koran that describe the sensa-tion felt when entering the Garden of Eden).
gARDENS, A REpLIcA OF EDEN?
With an area of 6.9 hectares, the central garden of the Taj Mahal was conceived as representing the earthly paradise, in the Persian garden style introduced to India by Babur, the first Mughal Emperor. They originally con-tained a multitude of exotic flowers and trees, all in perfect symmetry.
The canals, symbolized the four rivers of paradise, which according to Muslim tradition ran with water, milk, wine, and honey, with beauti-ful fountains, they intersected in the middle forming a large white marble fountain, raised above the ground, which symbolized the alkawthar, the celestial fountain of abundance mentioned in the Koran. Each of the four sides that border the canals are divided by stone inlaid paths that di-vide the area into sixteen squares…all in perfect harmony.

THE DEcLINE
Shortly after the conclusion of his masterwork, Shah Jahan, physically exhausted and economically bankrupted by the building of the Taj Mahal, had to face his sons who were starting to fight over his throne; due to his poor health, he was taken prisoner by his third son Aurangzeb, who had managed to defeat his brothers, and was made a prisoner in the Red Fort of Agra, where he spent the rest of his days admiring from a distance the final resting place of his beloved. After his death in 1666, Aurangzeb buried his father Shah Jahan next to Mumtaz Mahal, creating the only rupture of the perfect symmetry in the complex.
It is said that Shah Jahan wanted to build his own mausoleum in black marble, to mirror his wife’s mausoleum, on the other side of the Yamuna River and unite them with a golden bridge. On the other side of the river, facing the Taj Mahal, there are remnants of red rock which are said to be the beginning of the construction of the twin building to the most famous mausoleum in the world.

Expansion and Modernization will continue in 2008
Viru Viru
Since its opening in 1982, the Viru Viru International
Airport of Santa Cruz has not had such an ambi-tious and important expansion project as the one that is currently underway, which for 2008 alone
will involve an investment of US $1.7 million.
It is part of the Master Plan approved by the government in 2005 and was begun in 2006 with the expansion and remodel-ing of the three main terminal areas in La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz.
SABSA is ready this year to undertake the most significant expansion in the history of the Viru Viru International Airport.

EXPANSION TO THE NORTH
To continue to improve the infrastructure of Viru Viru toward offering better services, this year, SABSA will continue with the project started in 2006. Thus, once the Southern Gar-den is concluded (completion date estimated around February or March this year), the expansion of the Main Hall will begin on the ground floor, which has been called Northern Garden, which will create a larger check-in area with more counter space for the comfort of the airlines that operate in the airport and the passengers; this will also include the installation of a series of equipments such as new luggage belts, an electrical system, and new communications system, etc.

ExpANSIoNES AL SuR
most urgently needed project, will begin. It consists in extending the building toward the south and adding 4500 square meters on both floors (approximately 2250 square meters upstairs for departures and 2250 square meters downstairs for arrivals). Considering the traffic flow is increasing, especially during holidays, the parking is no longer sufficient for the high demand, so concurrently with the above proj-ect, the parking lot will be expanded. “We think that with this we will adequately address the current demand for a larger parking lot” says Juan Carlos Ossio
FUNCTIONALITY AND MODERNITY
As an additional project to the before mentioned expansions, and with the aim of increasing the functionality of the spaces already inaugurated last year, management proposes to modernize the pre-boarding areas in the domestic and international sections with an innovative new concept that will change the image of the sector. This project is called Single Access Project.
“In April of 2007 we inaugurated the new upstairs Central Hall, with new commercial spaces. However, we see that we need to highlight this important new area; so to this purpose and taking into account the new standards that are being implemented in most international airports around the world, we are going to unify the access to the pre boarding area”, comments the General Manager of Viru Viru, and explains that this fundamental reorganization is pro-posed given the inability to further expand the space for the waiting areas, due to the present infrastructure, especially in the international departure area.
“During the peak hours we have a bottleneck without an imme-diate solution, for that reason we are proposing to unify both access areas into a completely new area as far as passenger flow is con-cerned, we will not only avoid duplication of services but also triple the space available for the corresponding controls (Police, Immigra-tion, Customs, etc.) as well as the space for waiting areas” adds Ossio.
In this way, the domestic pre boarding area will triple its size from the current 260 square meters to 860 square meters, which will allow it to grow not only in area but also in passenger service, since the concept of having several different waiting areas where passengers wait to be called is now an obsolete concept. Viru Viru will renovate its services by offering more restaurants, shops, and leisure areas, in-cluding a panoramic view of the tarmac. In this manner we are trying to improve the stay of the passengers and make it more agreeable, and on the other hand, maximize the use of the spaces available.

“Lufthansa (Germany), United Airlines (United States), and TAP (Portugal), the three main participants of one of the mayor airline networks in the world, have a bilateral agreement with TAM, and are now negotiating with this Brazilian airline in an attempt to make a decision” explained the President of Star Alliance, Jaan Albrecht, on the occasion of the entrance of China’s Air China and Shanghai Airlines into the alliance.
Albrecht also added that they were also looking at Aerolíneas Ar-gentinas “they are very interesting, especially considering their recently announced airplane order”.
This interest in South America is part of their BRIC strategy, which owes its name to Brazil, Russia, India, and China, countries where the alliance does not yet have a presence. Thus, after the incor-poration of Air China and Shanghai Airlines and the announce-ment of the future entry of Air India, the next countries where the alliance will focus its attention are Russia and Brazil.

The beginning of the year, for recent high school gradu-ates, is a time to make decisions with the assistance of their parents and advisors. The variety of choices is endless, but guidance is scarce. This lack of information makes the deci-sion more difficult.
Taking this situation into account, the Universidad Técnica Privada de Santa Cruz (UTEPSA) , has created an
academic program designed to introduce young people to the main areas of study of their chosen careers.
The program consists of introductory courses, lasting two weeks, in: law, environmen-tal conservation, international studies, advertising, finance, marketing, engineering, and English.
This innovative and effec-tive method will be applied as of the 2008 academic year to help high school graduates to make the correct choice in ac-cordance to their interests and

SUDOKU
HOW DO YOU PLAY?
The Basic rules to play SuDoKu are very simple:
» Sudoku is played on a table of 9×9, componed of quadrants of 3×3.
» The objective is to fill in the empty spaces with numbers from 1 to 9, making sure that every column, row, and quadrant only has the num-bers once, with out repetition.
» Every number must appear only once in a row, column, and quadrant, so that the numbers are “alone”, as the name of the game says: SuDoku means “numbers alone”.

SoDuku is a mathematical brain teaser that started in 1986 and was presented to the world in 2005. It has the look of a crossword of 9 x 9 with 81 spaces grouped in interior quadrants of 3x3 dimensions.
The rules state that no number must be repeated in the same line, in that way SuDoku is base don the search of perfect numerical combinations. There are different levels of difficulty and resolving the problem requires patience and logical thinking. In reality it is not necessary to use numbers, you can also use letters, shapes, or colors without changing the rules; although the most common shape is 9x9 with 3x3 quadrants, other dimensions can be used.

DRÁCULA , EL HIJO DEL DRAGÓNIn 1998, La vida me duele sin vos (Life hurts
without you) won the very first Premio Nacional de Novela (National Novel Prize); today with its second edition, the acclaim continues with the same strength.
The book tells a story set in the city of Cochabamba, in which the main character, Daniel Estofán, lives his life without the ability to love, immersed in a crisis that leads him to the conclusion that it is not a duty to be happy, and maybe not even a goal. “It is more desired in its absence, because its presence constitutes the vivid image of doubt, to such a degree that nothing is certain, not even the desire we call love” can be read on the cover notes of the book, as a preview of the personality that Lema conferred on his central character.
Among other works, Lema has published Nos conocimos amando (short story, 1981), Anota que soy un hombre (short story, 1989), La huella es el olvido (novel finalist for the Premio de Novela de Casa de las Américas in 1993), and Ahora que es Entonces (novel, 1998).
Dracula, the son of the dragon is the book that attempts to reveal, finally, the true history of the origins of the famous legend known as Count Dracula. This is an essay that gives the reader a different vision of the dark vampire tale, tracing a parallel between history and fiction and shedding light on the controversial myth.
In the first pages, the author, Tereza Sheláru, points out that the purpose of her book is to reestablish the truth and glory that has been lost over 600 years by Prince Vlad III Basarab, voyvoda (Slavic term meaning king) of Walachia, military governor of Transylvania, Duke of Fagaras and Amlas, and Count of Oppeln and Zips. Thus, the reader can answer questions that may have run through their mind: Who really was Count Dracula? What was the origin of his name? How has he evolved from a Gothic novel of the XIX century to the horror movies of today?
