EDITORIAL
Barcelona will receive 2, 6 million vis-itors by sea this year, the largest dis-embarkation of its history. Barcelona has always been facing the sea but is now more than ever making a living from what the sea provides: tourism and visitors ready to enjoy a city, unique in the world for its cosmopolitan, hospita-ble and, above all, Catalan personality. We are well prepared and delighted to receive them.
The millions of visitors that each year walk around the Ramblas, streets and avenues of Barcelona come for many reasons, as Barcelona has many faces; it’s cultural, historical, the cradle of great important people representing all kind of arts, all of which have one thing in com-mon: its moderation. Barcelona exceeds the expectation of the visitors with its wide range of museums, although we can say that the city itself is one great museum, where you can wander around its many quarters; enjoy its generosity and its peaceful and discreet inhabitants.
We cannot talk about Barcelona without mentioning its world famous gastronomy; this city is a melting pot of restaurants, from the traditional to the most innovative and recognized cuisine. There are hun-dreds to choose between in this city, and they are all good. This also goes for its shops, its legendary streets, places that will surprise you... Its power of attraction on the tourists is not a coincidence.
The best boats in the world arrive at Barcelona’s seven cruise terminals, and thousands of new visitors disembark with eyes wide open, to conquer “their corner” of the city, because Barcelona has a corner for each and everyone. This “army” speaks a thousand languag-es, but please don’t worry, you won’t feel alien here in Barcelona, as we are al-ways prepared to greet you with a “Wel-come to Barcelona”.

¡Feliz Navidad!

The Catalan culture is full of strong traditions that are celebrated throu-ghout the year and especially when the Christmas arrives, we can enjoy a lot of them.
The Christmas in Barcelona in parti-cular and in Catalonia in general, is li-ved in a unique way. The tradition and the culture come together once again to celebrate this special time that here is lived with special pleasure. From W2 Barcelona we want to bring these cus-toms to they that do not know them yet, because they are not going to leave us indifferent.
To start, one of the most remote and strong traditions of Catalonia is to do the crib, a representation of the Jesus birth with figures of different materials. Children look forward to the time to start building, at home or at the school, the crib scenario, a scenario that can vary in size depending on the space availa-ble. Garnish with moss, logs, and other materials with corks. In some cases they use large infrastructures, achieving true works of art that take days and days to be built. During the Christmas season exhibitions and competitions in which you can admire these artistic represen-tations of the Jesus birth are organized.
Some of the figures that can not miss in the crib are the cave with the Virgin Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus and the star of Bethlehem, and countless of shepherds. We especially call attention to the figure of the “caganer”, represen-ting a shepherd relieving itself outdoors.
But in Catalunya there is also the tra-dition of representing the crib with real people, the Pessebre Vivent, a sight worthy to be seen.
Another emblematic figure of the Cata-lan Christmas is definitely the tió, a trunk of tree that is covered with a blanket and wear a barretina (a typical Catalan hat), and the kids beat him with a stick while they sing carols, waiting that they drop their gifts that appear under the blanket.
Gastronomically we will enjoy the most popular dessert of the holiday season, rich nougats, we will find different types like Jijona, marzipan, chocolate, etc al-monds, etc. They are all exquisite. We may also taste the Tortell de Reis (round cake) that is eaten the 6th of January, the day of the Three Wise Men.
From W2 Barcelona we invite you to spend the Christmas in Barcelona and certainly you are not going to forget it. A nice walk in the city centre, its streets lit by colour, to buy some gifts for your loved ones in the beautiful decorated shops, to go near the St Llucia Market, attend the Parade of the Three Wise Men with the children... all this will make you enjoy this time of the year in a spe-cial way.
Happy Christmas!

The Fira de Santa Llucia will be held as every year around the Cathedral of Barcelona, from the 30 November to the 23 December.
One of the most popular and rooted customs of the people of Barcelona, as Christmas approaches, the tradition is to attend to the Fira de Santa Llucía. But what exactly is the Fira de Santa Llucia? It is a market where you can find more than 270 stalls with all the Christmas garlands to decorate your house this time of year.
This market it sets up its stalls in front of the Cathedral of Barcelona, in the Plaça Nova, this market has been going since at least 1786! Did you imagine it?
If we walked among the different fair’s stalls we can distinguish four types of stands. Firstly, we will find the stalls se-lling related products with the crib and figures. Some examples are the caves, with all kinds of accessories to decorate the landscape crib, shooting stars or litt-le figures of the nativity as the birth, the shepherds, little animals, the wise men, etc., and the main protagonist of the Catalan nativity is the caganer, a figure of a shepherd doing the bodily functions outdoors. In addition, we also can buy Christmas lights, balls and other deco-rations for the home.
We also find stalls where they sell Christmas trees, both natural and ar-tificial, that people take them home to decorate with Christmas balls and li-ghts. These shelves also sell the typical figure of the tió of various sizes, which will make the joy of the children in the Christmas Day, giving them toys and sweets to all those who sing traditional songs while they beat it with a stick.

Finally, we will found two other type of stalls, some of them they offer us all kinds of handicraft products and acces-sories, such as decorative items and jewellery. In other we find the zambom-bas (a kind of drum) and tambourines to bring music and joy to the Christmas.
But to know what exactly the Fira de Santa Llucía is, the best is go and expe-rience it in person and wander the crow-ded streets of the fair to enjoy a true Christmas atmosphere of Barcelona, breathing the smell of the spruce and see the colourful lights all the stalls wi-thin the joyful music of the carols which sound all the time.
From W2 Barcelona we encourage you to go to the Fira de Santa Llúcia, a uni-que experience to live a Christmas very special that you will never forget.

Located in one of the most emblem-atic areas of Barcelona and a few me-tres from the Fountains of Montjuïc, the Poble Espanyol is one of the biggest at-tractions of the city offering an unique set about contemporary art, architec-ture, crafts and gastronomy in a quiet and peaceful.
It was built in 1929, on the occasion of the International Exhibition, with the idea of being a synthesis of architectural and cultural richness of Spain. Although it was planned to be demolished after this event, it was saved thanks to its success. So today, we can still enjoy the streets, squares and facades that make the Poble Espanyol a real village where we can find replicas of buildings from different Spanish regions where you can breathe the atmosphere and cultural di-versity of the country.
The cultural interest of the Poble Es-panyol is also explained by the presence of more than 30 craftspeople working in the area in a regular and continuous way and can be seen working. Recognized professionals who make glass, leather, ceramics, jewellery, masks, basketry, Spanish guitars..., they work on estab-lishments or workshops to offer visitors unique pieces, exclusive, handmade and, if desired, tailor made.
The Fran Daurel Museum is another at-traction. This is a private collection open to the public that hosts 295 works by fa-mous artists from the contemporary art: Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Tàpies, Barceló, Gui-novart and Amat, among many others.
Between walks, artistic discoveries and visits to the craftspeople and also to the gourmet food stores it will be neces-sary to regain strength in one of the res-taurants or bars in the Poble Espanyol. There is a wide range of establishments

The decline that already preceded Barcelona since the late Middle Ages continued during the following cen-turies, was the cause of the tensions with the reign of Philip IV and the subsequent War of Segadors.
The end of the Middle Ages was for the city of Barcelona a period of decline caused mostly by outbreaks of plague and widespread food shortages, that reduced the population of Barcelona in the mid- fourteenth century, causing a real demographic crisis.
The maritime trade, which in earlier times had been one of the principal axes of the prosperous economy of Barcelo-na, was adversely affected due to the piracy and the opening of the East route through the Atlantic route. In addition, he joined the farmer’s revolts caused by the debt that the monarchy was drag-ging, all that the city was being involved in a context of economic crisis.
The first settlements
began to be built outside
the city walls.
Politically, Catalonia was quite mar-ginalized from the union between Cas-tile and Aragon with the Catholic Mon-archs and especially during the reign of Philip II , who did not favour to recover the principality after the economic and demographic disasters of the fifteenth century. That’s when the confrontation between the ruling classes and Catalan Spanish monarchy were every day more apparent, especially with the reign of Philip IV. It was then that the citizens of Barcelona, affected by a few high taxes dictated by the Count-Duke of Olivares, to which is added the abuses commit-ted by the mercenaries of the king es-tablished in Catalonia, they revolted the 7 of June 1640, a rebellion known as the Corpus of blood, the origin of what later became the War of Segadors.
The War of Segadors was from 1640 until 1651, obtained this name because of the majority of farmers who formed the Catalan side, led by then president of the Generalitat , Mr Pau Claris, under the slogan of “living earth and death to bad government. “
Despite the help of the French, the ad-vance of the Spanish troops finally led in 1652 a capitulation from a city of Barce-lona which was again under orders from a Castilian King.

Vamos a enu-merar algunos.
Semon.
Can Ravell.
Feliz Navidad y buen provecho.

As you will have noticed, this num-ber is the first bimonthly since we started walking a few months ago we will propose 2 versions: the Christ-mas kitchen and what produces the Mediterranean during the “the called calmed of January”. Some unique products that we will tell you where and how you can eat them.
Exceptionally we are not going to rec-ommend a restaurant, but because we are in Christmas, there are many who will look for and prepared dishes ready to serve. Of course, from W2B we will
always defend a product, dish, recipe, idea by the, but you have to take into account that Barcelona has excellent gourmet shops, even at Christmas, they prepare delicious dishes. We will list some.
Semon. Store with a strong tradition in the upper class of Barcelona for its strategic location. But we won’t do not leave everything to its special place, but to its long experience gained as a lead-ing catering company and, at this time, prepares, packages and serves as one of the world ‘s best salmon: Benfumat.
Can Ravell. The show is in its products and in-store, a modernistic restaurant full beautiful crannies. Just go up a nar-row swivel staircase to the top floor, and after choosing what you’re going to take away, let you be advised and let you cook one of the most creative and tasty menus that you can test in Barcelona because, simply, in Can Ravell the first thing is the product.
After Christmas, it happens in the Mediterranean a sensational phenome-non. Fishermen call them “the calm of January.” These are days of clean and bright sun and calm sea. Those days that is difficult to return to see the rest of the year. And at this time come to the table for the lovers of the seafood and hedgehogs. In l’Empordà, the urchins are eaten raw, with a little piece of bread and, according to the famous Catalan writer Josep Pla, “biting a little onion that must-have a glass of white wine.” Try them, if you do not like, at least you will know that there is as unique flavour as particular as the sea urchin.
And finally, January and February are the best months for the sole. Remem-ber that the Mediterranean by his flesh, hardness and size, are the most want-ed. And in these months, when this will flounder spawning, serve them with a blow of oil and a boiled potato is as sim-ple as extraordinary seafood dish.
From W2B we recommend you to eat in the Celler del Barri Vell, in the seaside town of Palamós. As always, if anyone knows and wants to discover new plac-es, you can do it to
Merry Christmas and bon appétit.

What gave rise to Skal España and what are its aims?
What are the tourist Art prefer-ences?
The tourists who visit the centre of Bar-celona are very varied, they come from all countries with different and budgets, they buy all kind of paintings, but they are more interested in local artists and images of Barcelona. I am specialized in modern figurative painting and I com-bine it with sculpture exhibitions.
How can you adapt the gallery to the preferences of the visitant?
The gallery has not changed much its artistic line or its offer, because many of the artists exhibiting at the gallery like painting our city.
On a practical level there are small de-tails, as some new signage and flyer in English. We have extended our opening time and we open if we can on Monday morning and we don’t close at noon, we have improved the system for the deliv-eries abroad lowering the costs of par-cel delivery, the courier have improved us the prices and we have changed the way of managing the return of VAT, han-dle it ourselves, we accelerate the pro-cess and the customer receives entirely 21% without commissions intermediar-ies, leading to a better service.
What is the percentage of the purchase-sale of art by the tour-ist regarding the national cus-tomers?
During the last three years we have seen that in the high tourist season the tourist purchase can represent up to 70% of the total, representing a signif-icant part of the turnover.
When you program an exhibi-tion calendar, do you have the tourists in mind?
Yes, if we have in mind the tourism when we program the exhibitions, espe-cially at Easter and the months of June, July, August, September, and even in recent years, October.
Since last year we decided to open also in August in our area we are the only gallery that is opened this month.
And finally, the tourists’ forecast for 2014 is even higher, how it af-fects to your exhibition schedule?
I do not have a specific plan for tour-ism during 2014. In fact, day by day, we find that almost all the artists that we work with are liked by the foreign visi-tors.
About the supply, we believe, that is very attractive and varied in thematic, style and sizes.

On January the 7 the sales begin in Bar-celona, a unique opportunity to purchase any product at very desirable prices thanks to its big discounts.
If you are in Barcelona from the 7th of January and you intend to buy some kind of product, you are in luck, because that day begin the sales, an event that has be-come one of the most anticipated events of the Spanish citizens during the year.
The evening of the 5th of January is an expected day throughout the year, especially by children. The Three Kings parade of Barcelona fills the streets of magic and illusion in the middle of the Christmas spirit that breathes the city.
Clothing, accessories, housewares, shoes, bags, furniture, computers, books... from a small addition to luxury products, you are going to find all of them on sale with discounts that can reach 70%.
Without exception, the Barcelona stores offer their products at a much lower price, and if you look hard, you can find real op-portunities that you can not afford to lose.
For this reason from W2 Barcelona we recommend you to stroll around the are-as of highest concentration of stores in the city to be close to what you want. Some of these areas are on the Paseo de Gracia , Rambla Cataluña and around it. Also the shops are located in the Francesc Macia and Diagonal decrease considerably the prices during these dates, as well as shop-ping centers that are in Barcelona.
If you like shopping, this time in Barcelo-na offers a unique opportunity to enter in the shops laden with bags with a fantastic price. Make the most of it and enjoy the sales!
For many people this is certainly one of the most magical nights where all children and their parents, go excited to receive the Three Kings. The Three Kings parade go through the streets of Barcelona a few hours before they bring gifts to those children who have been good during the rest of the year.
The Three Kings floats magnificently decorated and accompanied by their pages that give thousands of sweets all the way and collect the children’s let-ters.
The party starts the evening of the 5th of January, when the Three Kings arrive with his entourage to the port of Barce-lona. There, they begin their long route through some of the streets of the city, especially in the centre town.
It is totally advisable to go to the Three Kings parade of Barcelona, where the spectacle of light, music and magic leave little children astounded waiting excited and expectant the next morning, because when they will wake up they will find in their homes the gifts they have left the Three Kings of the East.

• Always keep your belongings in sight.
• Protect your handbag and wallet on public transport and in crowded areas (markets, events…)
• Don’t allow your luggage to be handled by third parties and never check- in suitcases or bags which belong to other people, especially on international journeys.
• Keen an eye on your camera or video camera in places of leisure
• When you go to the beach or the swimming pool, only take what is essential
• If you use a vehicle, don’t leave valuable or noticeable objects in view
• As far as possible, try not to go to lonely or badly lit places
• Don’t trust suspicious attempts to “help” (someone advising you that there is a stain on your clothing or a problem with your vehicle, etc). These are usually attempts at robbery.
• In the street, never participate in games of chance and don’t accept “bargains”. These are undoubtedly swindles or scams.
At the hotel or apartment…
• Don’t leave keys, money or valuable items in your room. Use the safe deposit boxes.
• In communal areas (reception, restaurants, swimming pool) keep an eye on your baggage and personal ítems (bags, cameras etc.).
• Follow the same self-defence measures which are recommended by the Police in your own country: but be extra wary because you are in a city which is new to you.
• When walking about, only take essential documentation with you and don’t have valuable ítems (money, jewellery, cameras) on show.
• Be careful when you use automatic cash dispensers and try not to use your credit card in markets or to pay small amounts.
• In cafés and restaurants, don’t leave your belongings (telephone, cam-era) on top of the table and don’t hang your bag over the back of your chair.
• As far as possible, try not to walk around empty streets or poorly lit areas.
THE opinions of those who visit a tourist destina-tion are important because they provide useful feed-back about what that destination is like, what is good about it and what its defects may be.
