BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS PUJANZA
D.O.Ca. RIOJA - SPAIN
Carlos San Pedro is face and heart of Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza, a thoroughbred winemaker
Pwho carries the genes of his wine lineage. He has tipped over in his wines the cheery
enthusiasm of his commitment with the world of the wine, creating harmonic wines, always with a
right balance between fruit and aging, with elegant and deep palates carrying in their name the
landmark of a region.
Carlos San Pedro, owner and technical director of Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza, is also the forth
generation of a family of vine-growers, wine-makers and wine merchants of Laguardia. Bodegas
y Viñedos Pujanza is his more personal project. A dream which was born during his childhood
and has gone taking shape with the years until become a splendid fact. In 1998, Carlos already
has in property 15 has of vineyard and decides to produce his first own wine, his first Pujanza.

After years of training, today a new stage starts in the life of this young winery. Hado, in its third
vintage, is renewed in and outside, in order to represents and offer freshness and tipicity from
Tempranillo grape. We add to this change, launch of Pujanza Finca Valdepoleo, an iconic wine
which comes from the original Pujanza wine. Finally, we have carried out a change to a more
representative and faithful image of what is Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza today, a winery that
remains looking for the excellence in every vineyard.

LAGUARDIA
Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza is located in Laguardia, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, one of the
most beautiful villages in Spain, both for its cultural and historical heritage and for the people who
live and work its lands.
Winery is situated at the foot of Sierra de Cantabria, surrounded by some of most characteristic
vineyards, in an area where altitude starts to be a limiting factor for this crop. It is an exclusive
place to contemplate a lovely view from the hill of Laguardia and witness the evolution of the
vineyard during the year. Sierra de Cantabria is not only the north border of the Designation. It
also operates as a natural frontier for villages and crops of this area creating a perfect climate for
the vines.

HISTORY
Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza starts in 1998 producing only a wine: Pujanza.
While facilities are built, wines are made in the familiar winery until 2001 when first harvest is
carried out in the new winery. 2001 was an excellent vintage in this area. An spacious and
simple building, mainly thought for the efficiency and comfort of the daily work. A viewpoint tower
crowned the winery, where it has been placed a tasting room, and from where it is possible to
enjoy a panoramic view over the vineyards, Sierra de Cantabria and east wall of Laguardia.
BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS PUJANZA, S.L. – LAGUARDIA, SPAIN www.bodegaspujanza.com
Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza, Laguardia. Philosophy of the winery is well defined from the beginning. Wine must be produced in the
vineyard and so our greatest effort is made there, understanding and having the best knowledge
of every single vineyard. In Pujanza we only used grapes form our own vineyards. Some of these
plots already belonged to Carlos San Pedro’s family, as Finca La Valcabada, origin of Pujanza
Cisma, and other have been bought by him during last years.
OUR VINEYARDS
Pujanza has in property 40 has. of vineyard, all of them in Laguardia, from which we produced all
of our wines. We cultivate only Tempranillo, an indigenous red grape variety from Rioja, except in
one very special vineyard where we cultivate Viura, white grape variety, to produce our only white
wine, Añadas Frías. These four are the most representative vineyards in Pujanza: FINCA VALDEPOLEO 17,5 has. (43,2 acres) vineyard planted in 1973 at 630 m. (2.067 ft.). of altitude. Clay-limestone soil. Yield: 4.500 kg/ha. (1.800 kg/ac.).

FINCA NORTE 2,7 has. (6,7 ac.) vineyard, located at 720 m. (2.360 ft.) of altitude, one of the highest in the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Clay - limestone soil with a calcareous stone level (50 cm. (1,60 ft.) depth). Yield: 3.500 kg/ha. (1.400 kg/ac.). FINCA LA VALCABADA
0,8 has. (2 ac.) vineyard planted in 1925 at 600 m. (1.970 ft.) of altitude. Clay-limestone deep soil. Yield: 1.500 kg/ha. (600 kg/ac.).

SAN JUAN DE ANTEPORTALATINA 1,5 has. (3,7 ac.) vineyard at 600 m. (1.970 ft.) of altitude. Planted in 1989. Clay-limestone soil with a high limestone content.
VINEGROWING
Our essential work is realized in the vineyard. Through viticulture we try to obtain the most representative and high quality grapes in every parcel. Thus, it is in the vineyard where we make the greatest effort and a very accurate work, always developing a friendly viticulture with the crop and the environment around it. During previous month before harvest, many grape samplings in every plot are realized to know the evolution in the ripening and be able to decide the right moment to pick grapes from every vineyard. Harvest is made by hand and grapes are transported to the winery in 20 kg plastic crates in order to keep quality of the grapes. During picking, a selection of the right bunches is also made, leaving on the plant those don’t meet the criteria for the winemaking. Once in winery, if it is necessary, we will do a second selection of bunches in the sorting table. It is unusual to make this second selection because the good health of the grapes and the selection made in the vineyard.

WINEMAKING
Pujanza winemaking follows traditional process with an accurate control. Fermentation took place in 15.000 L. stainless steel vats, excluding Pujanza Cisma and Añadas Frías. Pujanza Cisma is elaborated in a 1.700 kg. Barrel box, a structure of stainless steel with oak staves faces, and Añadas Frías is made and aged in two barrels of 225 and 500 L. Our top is a thorough control of timing and temperatures in every tank, in order to preserve quality and personality obtained in the vineyard.
AGING
Every Pujanza wine is aged a minimum of 12 month in French oak barrels from best forests. Although we have not a large number of barrels, we use casks from different coopers in order to add to our wines a higher complexity that goes along with character obtained in the vineyard. As during winemaking, our best tool to control wine evolution in the barrels is tasting them often, to be able to take right decisions in perfect moments.
