FOLLOWING CHRIST If you’ve ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amusing practical joke played on you, then you have some understanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God “good one—you duped me.” We can almost see him shaking his head with a bit of a rueful smile, but an angry undertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is “duping” him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means taking up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God’s will for him by trying to shut up; Peter—who has just been made the foundation of the church—out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named “Satan” today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week’s Gospel, and came to understand our need as baptized followers of Christ to follow in his way, even when

it means following him to our very death. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The name of the LORD has become like fire burning in Jeremiah’s heart (Jeremiah 20:7-9). Psalm — My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). Second Reading — Be transformed; renew your mind; discern what is good (Romans 12:1-2). Gospel — Those who lose their lives for Jesus’ sake will find them (Matthew 16:21-27). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commssion on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — Me sedujiste, Señor, y me dejé seducir

mente (Romanos 12:1-2). Evangelio — Si quieres seguirme, renuncia a ti mismo,

carga con tu cruz y sígueme (Mateo 16:21-27). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997,

Be transformed. What an awesome invitation God extends to

us: whatever we're dealing with now, whatever has burdened us

in our lives, he intervenes to change completely our

experience. "Be transformed," Saint Paul tells us in our second

reading today, "by the renewal of your mind."

Few things are as fundamental to Christianity as the call to

change. Jesus' first words in his ministry are that same call:

"Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." Our challenge

is however, after perhaps some initial adaptations, we settle into

a rut of repetition.

For us humans the familiar is much more attractive than the

unfamiliar: it becomes almost synonymous with the comfortable

versus the uncomfortable. What is known, even if in itself

detrimental, is a much safer place for us than venturing out into

the unknown of personal change.

This Christian call to change, then, is a call to be

uncomfortable. God wants to draw us beyond what we would

have chosen for ourselves. Be transformed, Saint Paul insists,

by the renewal of your minds.

To enter something new means to leave something old

behind. "Do not conform yourself to this age," Saint Paul's

words in Romans include. Not only do we have to strip off our

own nature, but we discover that this change puts us at odds

with our culture as well.

And as difficult to venture into the unknown is, perhaps even

tougher is bucking what our family and friends are doing. Few

things make us feel more secure than fitting in with those around

us, and when Saint Paul, when Jesus, tell us we have to be

different from them, to live differently than the people we want

to be liked by, this is precarious indeed.

Be transformed. This is a high stakes challenge the Bible calls

us to. Jesus recognizes this in our Gospel today when he says,

"Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses

his life for my sake will find it." Jesus realizes that the call to

change is so painful, so profound, that we literally feel like we

are dying when we take the plunge he requires of us.

"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up

his cross, and follow me." We are called to change, but more

profoundly, we are called to be with Jesus. This transformation,

this renewal, is with him--not something we execute on our own,

in some self-help isolation, but walking with him, following him,

learning that resurrection, renewal, is possible because we

experience it with him.

Be transformed.
