Sunday, November 29, 2009 The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the
house of Israel and Judah.
- Jeremiah 33:14
Promises are among the loveliest things on the earth. Lovers delight in the vows they
speak to each other. Children thrive on the promises of their parents. Our sacraments
are each tangible covenants between God and us. The only thing better than a promise
is its fulfillment. That’s why every Advent journey ends in Bethlehem.
The First Sunday of Advent There are times when visitors arrive
without giving us prior notice and when
this occurs we drop everything to tend to
them. But when they give us prior
notice we go out of our way to prepare
for their visit, go shopping, plan, clean
the house, and think about the food we
are going to prepare and serve our
guests. These are actions that
demonstrate caring and kindness for the
visitors we are expecting. They are
expressions of our hospitality. Today
we begin the season of Advent, in other
words, of waiting for the coming of the
Lord. Surely we get the house ready,
hang up our Christmas decoration, bring
out the Nativity set and tree, and carry
out all the traditional preparations. Yet
we know it is not enough to wait for the
Lord, because the readings say these are
extraordinary signs and the coming of
the end of times. How does one prepare
for this? Surely not with material
actions. The reading of Paul to the
Thessalonians provides a clue as to what
can be done: be compassionate with one
another, make love grow between us,
become holy and do good until the day
of his coming. Then you will be willing
to receive him as king and Lord, by
practicing the deeds of his kingdom.
For Reflection
What can I do in my surroundings to
prepare for the coming of the Lord? Am
I simply satisfied with all the external
preparations? How do I improve my
relationships with others?

¿Me confor-
mo, simplemente, con los preparativos externos? ¿Cómo mejoro mis relaciones con
los demás?
