The catering industry is a sector that employs a large number of foreign workers.Bars, hotels and restaurants use the services of foreign workers who, apart from notknowing the language, are not aware of Spanish legislation and, in particular, thelaw on Health and Safety at Work.
Since 2005 the Confederación de Organizaciones Empresariales de la ComunidadValenciana (CIERVAL), the Confederation of Business Organisations in the ComunidadValenciana, has taken part in implementing various agreements designed toaccommodate and integrate immigrants, including the preparation of materials toprovide basic information on Health and Safety at Work for foreign workers in theindustries of the Valencian Community that generate most employment.
As part of the Agreement signed in 2009 between CIERVAL and the Departmentof Solidarity and Citizenship, in the context of the Agreement signed by the ValencianRegional Government and the Ministry of Employment and Immigration regardingmeasures to accommodate and integrate immigrants, CIERVAL, as an organisationcommitted to promoting a culture of prevention, has produced this guide, whichdescribes safe ways of carrying out the commonest tasks in the catering industry, with their translation into the most representative languages of foreign workers inthe sector.
The guide describes the typical situations in which work-related accidents in thecatering industry usually occur, giving simple recommendations for working safely. If these are followed, the risk of accidents will be avoided.
It is based on a publication produced by the PIMEC (Pequeña y Mediana Empresade Cataluña), the association of small and medium-sized enterprises of Catalonia, funded by the Foundation for the Prevention of Work-related risks under calls forproposals for assignation of resources IT-138/2005 and IT-180/2006 issued bythe Consell de Treball, Econòmic i Social de Catalunya, and has been republishedby CIERVAL with its own contributions and translated into four languages: Chinese,English, French and German.
