3.4.2.2. D3.4.2.2. DIFFERENCESIFFERENCES
Generally speaking, there are three auxiliary verbs in the analyzed Romance languages, all of them coming from Latin:
habere, esse, tenere.
To be more specific: in Spanish haber (from Latin habere) is the only auxiliary verb; in Portuguese there are two auxiliary verbs haver (from Latin
habere) and ter (from Latin tenere); they are used interchageably; in Portugal ter is more frequent and in Brazil – haver;
in French there are also two auxiliary verbs: avoir (from Latin habere) and être (from Latin esse), but they are not interchangeable.
Tense PERFECTUM INDICATIVI is used to describe a different temporal arrangement in each of the three analyzed languages.
-31-
Synoptic Description: Spanish, Portuguese, French. Cycle 3.
Similarly, tense PRAETERITUM SIMPLEX is used to describe a different temporal arrangement in each of the three analyzed languages.Portuguese and Spanish have FUTURUM SIMPLEX CONIUNCTIVI and FUTURUM COMPOSITUM CONIUNCTIVI; there are not such tenses in French.In turn, in French there are tenses called SURCOMPOSÉS, they do not exist in Spanish or Portuguese.In Portuguese there is a tense called PLUSQUAMPERFECTUM SIMPLEX INDICATIVI; it does not exist in Spanish or French.In Portuguese there is a form called INFINITIVUS PERSONALIS; such a form does not exist in French or Spanish.Tense PLUSQUAMPERFECTUM COMPOSITUM INDICATIVI 2 is formed by juxtaposing PARTICIPIUM and an auxiliary verb in PRAETERITUM SIMPLEX INDICATIVI in French and Spanish, but in Portuguese the auxiliary verb has to be in PLUSQUAMPERFECTO SIMPLEX INDICATIVI.In French negation is expressed according to the following formula: particle ne + verb + another negative word (e.g. pas, plus, rien...).
