COOL CONCEPT

Focusing on the idea of a ‘trait’

being something about a product

that sets it apart, Barcelona’s Trait

Store is flled with items with a

clearly defned design or concept.

There’s a wide range on ofer,

including clothing, cosmetics,

accessories, footwear, art, home-

ware and more. Founders Gabriel

Ortiz and João Novaes choose

everything primarily for its strong

identity; as a result, there are

pieces from an array of interna-

tional names and Spanish labels,

many both designed and made in

Barcelona. These are products

chosen to be inspiring, and a trip

to Trait Store is never disappoint-

ing, with something new and

exciting available to see on every

visit. mkh

LOCAL TREASURE

Award-winning designer Teresa

Helbig is fascinated by fabrics.

Growing up, she spent a lot of

time in her mother’s dressmak-

ing studio, where she learnt about

the aspects of fashion that are not

immediately visible: the excellence

of the fabrics, the perfect stitching

and the tiny fnishing touches that

make a garment just so. Unsur-

prisingly, Helbig was flled with a

passion for the world of clothing,

and with her eponymous label

she is putting her hard-earned

knowledge into practice. Visit her

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Layers and textures take centre

stage in Marina Rinaldi’s collec-

tion for autumn/winter 2015/16,

which focuses on a wintry but

warm palette of deep greys, navy

blues, muted jewel tones and, of

course, classic black. Contrasting

materials are superimposed to

add a new dimension to time-

less silhouettes. Lace and wool

add texture, while fashes of bold

checks and animal prints stand out

against slimming block colours.

As always with Marina Rinaldi,

the hourglass is the central shape;

look out for a selection of stylish

waist-cinching belts. mkh

A bustling shopping destina-

tion, Passeig de Gràcia is

one of the most prestigious

streets in Spain, and arguably the

most famous luxury destination

in Barcelona. Rumoured to be

Spain’s most expensive street

when it comes to property prices,

it is home to many of the Catalo-

taurants, as well as world-famous

architecture, and boutiques from

some of the world’s most sought-

after designer brands.

Passeig de Gràcia has been a

favourite haunt of the well-heeled

and style-conscious since the

early 19th century. It originally

connected Barcelona and Gràcia,

then a suburb of the city, and

aristocrats focked to the street

to parade in their smart horse-

drawn carriages. By 1897, when

Gràcia was formally annexed to

Barcelona, and the area between

developed to form a new area

called Eixample (‘the extension’),

the Passeig had gone from being a

road lined by felds to Barcelona’s

most stylish street. As smart new

residents moved in, businesses

soon followed suit and exclusive

stores shared space with some of

the city’s fnest mansions.

The street’s prestigious reputa-

and today it is home to not only

the best Spanish luxury labels

but also the fnest international

This world-

famous street has

represented the

epicentre of luxury

in Barcelona for

well over a century

recognised worldwide as a shop-ping destination on a par with streets such as New York’s Fifth Avenue and Paris’s Champs-Élysées, ofering everything from Prada and Valentino to Manolo Blahnik and Louis Vuitton.

Among the stars of the street’s retail landscape are some of Spain’s oldest stores, including acclaimed multi-brand boutique Santa Eulalia. Founded in 1843, it carries an expertly curated selec-tion of the latest in luxury men’s

and women’s fashion and acces-sories. As well as must-have items from everyone from long-estab-lished names to exciting emerging brands, the store has a bespoke atelier for tailoring, and has a café and a picturesque roof terrace.

For Santa Eulalia and the other businesses that call the street home, Passeig de Gràcia is far more than just a location – a fact refected in the existence of a thriving local association. Established in 1952, L’Associació

seeks to safeguard and protect the

culture, inhabitants and interests

of the area, and Santa Eulalia’s

owner Luis Sans sits as its chair.

‘Passeig de Gràcia is the most

important commercial street in

Barcelona,’ Sans explains. ‘It

is one of the very few shopping

streets in the world that, apart

from the best stores, also has very

good restaurants, hotels, museums

and historical sites.’ Such a one-

of-a-kind place merits a similarly

prominent association to look after

it, and Sans and his team work

tirelessly to maintain the integrity

of the Passeig and its surround-

ing area, ensuring that the stores,

restaurants, hotels and cultural

sights remain of a high standard

for locals and visitors alike.

Two of the most important

cultural attractions along the

Passeig were designed by Spain’s

most famous architect, Antoni

Gaudí. La Pedrera (also known

as Casa Milà) and Casa Batlló,

former aristocratic residences that

now house museums, are prime

example of Catalan modernism.

Even so, they are by no means the

only buildings of note. Since the

early 20th century, the Passeig

has been home to works by some

of Spain’s most notable architects,

including Josep Puig i Cadafalch,

Lluís Domènech i Montaner and

Pere Falqués i Urpi, who also de-

signed the street’s ornate benches

and street lamps.

With a location of this calibre,

it is not surprising that some of

the nation’s top chefs have chosen

to open restaurants here. The

two-Michelin star restaurant

culture to the next level, ofering

The menu is decidedly modern,

It’s not just about award-

a restaurant on Passeig de Gràcia

opening each year it’s clear the

street’s heyday is far from over.

Passeig de Gràcia ofers myri-

Spain has a long history when it

comes to chocolate. Thanks to

its intrepid explorers, cacao was

introduced to the country from the

Americas in the 16th century, and

rapidly became part of the culinary

landscape. From the earliest days, it

was seen as something to be drunk

rather than eaten, echoing the way

the Aztecs in Central America

used it – though the original,

rather bitter brew was sweetened

to suit European tastes. It became

a favourite of the Spanish royal

family and their courtiers, and was

soon enjoying huge popularity at

all levels of society.

Even today, chocolate remains a

much-loved hot drink, and churros

y chocolate – slender doughnuts

dusted with sugar, served with

chocolate thick enough to stand a

spoon up in – is a popular breakfast

or late-night treat. Thanks to

the eforts of the country’s fnest

chocolatiers, however, Spaniards

are also developing a taste for

other cacao-related products,

from bespoke bars to exquisitely

favoured trufes.

Oriol Balaguer is one of Spain’s

most eminent confectioners and

his creations – as you’d expect

from a former colleague of world-

famous experimental chef Ferran

Adrià – are mouth-watering works

of art. He has several stores in

Barcelona, but for chocolate lovers

the one to visit is La Xocolateria

by Oriol Balaguer. The boutique

showcases Oriol’s 20 chocolate

collections, which are all shaped

to resemble half a cocoa pod. Fla-

vours are imaginative and surpris-

ing: think wasabi, yuzu, olive oil

and trufe. There’s also a range

of chocolate bars, all made to the

highest standards. Don’t leave

without tasting one of the truly

indulgent hot chocolates, available

in milk, white or dark varieties.

For those who like their chocolate on the artisanal side, there are few places that will please more than Chök. Visitors to the boutique and café, located conveniently close to La Rambla, will fnd it almost

impossible to leave without sam-pling at least one of the tempting sweet treats. Star billing is given to the chöks, described as gourmet doughnuts, which are super light and crispy; 30 diferent varieties are baked daily, including plenty of chocolate-themed favours such as the chocolate Marmitako, a cacao lover’s take on a classic Basque dish. For something more straightforward, Chök’s hand-made chocolate slabs, with their simple yet chic packaging, are a sure winner.

Passeig de Gràcia

Passeig de Gràcia –

Louis Vuitton.

(Passeig de Gràcia)

(Eixample),

Prada

到Valentino,从Manolo Blahnik到

Louis Vuitton,

Santa Eulalia。

(L’Associació d’Amics

(Casa Batlló)

品,Josep Puig i Cadafalch、Lluís

Domènech i Montaner和 Pere

Falqués i Urpi

Pere

Falqués i Urpi
