    ROCKY CPU Processing Speed TestsThestreamlinedcalculationsincludedwithinROCKYproducefasterandmoreaccurateresultswhen

    comparedtootherDEMproducts.However,onlyROCKYincludesnon-roundparticles,which,becauseof

    theirextracornersandplanes,takemoreprocessingpowertocalculatethansphericalparticles.Therefore,

    whencomparingprocessingspeedsamongDEMproducts,itisimportanttocompareapplestoapples,orin

    thiscase,sphereparticleswithsphereparticles.

    Also,becausenon-roundparticlesarenewtotheDEMworld,itisimportanttounderstandhowusingnon-

    roundparticlesinyoursimulationimpactsyourprocessingtime.Itisalsoimportanttounderstandhow

    increasingyourprocessingpowerimpactsyouroverallsimulationtime.

    Tohelpillustratethesepoints,theComminutionTechnologyengineersusedROCKYtoprocesssimulations

    usingseveraldifferentcombinationsofroundandnon-roundparticlegroupsonseveraldifferentcomputers

    withdifferentprocessors.Theresultingdatagivesyouabasicguidelineforprocessingsimulationsonyour

    ownmachines.

    Test Results

    ThefollowingdatawascollectedbysettingupsimilarROCKYsimulationsusingthesamechutegeometries

    andparticlesizeanddistributionsettings(seeParticleShapeandSizeDistributions).Thesimulationswere

    thenprocessedfor20secondsofrealflowtimeonthemachinesdescribedbelow.Theclocktimeittookto

    completethesimulationswasthenrecorded.

    Basedonthisdata,youcancometoyourownconclusionsabouthowdifferentparametersaffectsimulation

    time,andcanusethoseconclusionstodeterminewhatprocessingoptionsworkbestforyourneeds.

    Forexample:

    Increasingtheparticlesizeratiowillcausetimepenalties.

    Agroupofmono-sizedparticleswillprocess12timesfasterthanequivalentlysized,non-round,15-

    facetedparticles.
