since 1990• Diaspora• Per UNICEF, Zim has the

highest # of orphans in proportion to it’s population of any country in the world

• HIV rate has dropped 10% in Zimbabwe but life expectancy is still horribly low at 39 years.

• Health and education systems imploded

• Farm production weakened by land seizures

• Women are the backbone of the economy, and are getting some foreign assistance.

1990 formation 2000 501(3)c status - raised $24,000 that went to build a

clinic and more Since then annual fundraisers raising $8-$15k via

volunteer initiative Portland delegations went there in 2006 and 2008 – Now

looking to fundraise to go back to sustain relationships, check program progress

Commonalities of forestry industry Concern for prevalence of HIV there tied to our strong hospital

and HIV support network A schoolmistress who never gave up Population size akin to Portland’s Scenic beauty Close to the sea and thus a key shipping point A manageable but sizeable community – the biggest province in

size, 4th biggest city A wonderful, warm people An educational and health care system that imploded a few years

after independence – from breadbasket to land of vast needs.

92 kids lost fathers, 106 lost mothers, 58 lost both. 50 orphans annually: books, school fees, clothing 980 students and 33 teachers: school supplies, feminine

products, toiletry supplies, detergents, play equipment, musical instruments.

Aid to orphanage housing 33 kids Computers, heaters, radios, TV, stove, refrigerator, 1200

eyeglasses Specialist learning classes for with sight and hearing

disabilities, cerebral palsy 2 special classes for slow learners, 2 classes for home econ

and Art/Design Partial salary for headmistress Clothing and suntan lotion for albinos Support to help ensure that Zim’s 90% literacy doesn’t fall

amidst the economic and political distress.

Health Care Accomplishments Clinic and some medical supplies

– 10,000 patients, 3 births a month minimum. Malaria, TB and HIV care.

Ambulance to hospital, patient p/up as needed:

Partial salary for nurse Fresh water and electricity to the

clinic Pregnant women's’ shelter,

nurses kitchen Phones, heaters, hospital beds,

laptops for clinic Bikes for hospice visits and

village outreach Community well Plan International helped with

some clinic equipment

Health and Education

people affected by HIV. HIV testing and education, support groups.

Help manage, organize events

Help apply cloth embroidered panels made by Zimbabwean women to tshirts and bags

Staff a booth selling panels hand made in Zimbabwe by HIV+ women

Research and/or write grants

Serve as volunteer coordinator

Maintain donor and sponsor database and email newsletter database. Calls or emails to fill in the blanks on our database of contacts.

Leverage your contacts with individuals and corporations to gather donations, auction items.

Solicit individuals to be Board members or volunteers

Organize and lead a school-school program involving Jefferson High and Mutare HighLay out organizational plan, gather volunteers, talk with Mutare High leadership, develop group action plan draft to be reviewed/edited by students regarding their purpose and activities

Call to arrange presentations about PMSCA before Rotary Clubs and A-A churches. Secure/book speakers.

Donate time and/or $ Help connect us with people and companies through

the Portland metro area who have a passion for Africa, health issues, education – a warm handoff

Grant research: creating a list of all grants for which we are eligible and there’s a good fit between our purpose and that of grantors. Target educational grants, grants for programs for the deaf, aid for terminally ill and hospice organizations, for music/arts/culture academy, for SCPA, for Board travel to Zim to assess program effectiveness, new needs, sustain relationships, . Create a list from which we can select to apply in the future.
