Commonalities of forestry industry Concern for prevalence of HIV there tied to our strong hospital

and HIV support network A schoolmistress who never gave up Population size akin to Portland’s Scenic beauty Close to the sea and thus a key shipping point A manageable but sizeable community – the biggest province in

size, 4th biggest city A wonderful, warm people An educational and health care system that imploded a few years

after independence – from breadbasket to land of vast needs.

So why Mutare?

92 kids lost fathers, 106 lost mothers, 58 lost both. 50 orphans annually: books, school fees, clothing 980 students and 33 teachers: school supplies, feminine

products, toiletry supplies, detergents, play equipment, musical instruments.

Aid to orphanage housing 33 kids Computers, heaters, radios, TV, stove, refrigerator, 1200

eyeglasses Specialist learning classes for with sight and hearing

disabilities, cerebral palsy 2 special classes for slow learners, 2 classes for home econ

and Art/Design Partial salary for headmistress Clothing and suntan lotion for albinos Support to help ensure that Zim’s 90% literacy doesn’t fall

amidst the economic and political distress.

Health Care Accomplishments Clinic and some medical supplies

– 10,000 patients, 3 births a month minimum. Malaria, TB and HIV care.

Ambulance to hospital, patient p/up as needed:

Partial salary for nurse Fresh water and electricity to the

nurses kitchen Phones, heaters, hospital beds,

laptops for clinic Bikes for hospice visits and

Donate time and/or $ Help connect us with people and companies through

the Portland metro area who have a passion for Africa, health issues, education – a warm handoff

Grant research: creating a list of all grants for which we are eligible and there’s a good fit between our purpose and that of grantors. Target educational grants, grants for programs for the deaf, aid for terminally ill and hospice organizations, for music/arts/culture academy, for SCPA, for Board travel to Zim to assess program effectiveness, new needs, sustain relationships, . Create a list from which we can select to apply in the future.
