The skiing season 2014/15 has finally arrived, and so have we with another number of NIX. It gives us great joy to come back to this yearly appointment and to still be able to offer snow- and mountain-re-lated contents to you readers, who have found a magazine made by ski-ers to skiers. We hope the contents of this new season dont let you down, and that they will contribute to your knowing (either hands-on or via the pages of NIX) the destinations we in-troduce, and also that they increase the desire and passion we share to-wards snow and mountain.

We who make NIX have to add to the satisfaction of going on, the feeling of gratitude we have for the nearly 25000 visitors the magazine had dur-ing the season 13/14. And, of course, we also want to thank the advertisers who trusted us last issue, the ones who do so in this new one, and spe-

cially, the ones who have renewed your trust in NIX as advertising medi-um, repeating your presence and your help, without which it would be really hard to achieve a worthy product.

We would strongly like to thank read-ers and advertisers for letting us keep making the magazine we want, with the contents we like, and sharing them with everybody. This season we want to take this great relationship further, and besides the present mag-azine, we have published the website of NIX (www.revistanix.com), where you can find all the information about the digital issue, as well as contents that will allow us to have a more im-mediate, continuous and updated relationship with our users. We go on with rekindled thrill, and with the same idea to do what we like and share it.

    Thank you!

    BAQUEIRA-BERET CUMPLE 50 AOSY CRECE

BAQUEIRA-BERET TURNS 50... AND ITS STILL GROWING

Felicidades!

On the 6th of December, 2014, the ski resort located in the valley of Aran, and considered the best ski resort in Spain, will reach half a century. In 1964 the resort was

opened to skiers with a ski lift in what is now the

main core of the resort. From that day, Baquei-

ra-Beret has grown in ski lifts and area, reaching

more than 140 km in pistes, and a territory of near-

ly 2000 hectares, with a vast number of lines and

tracks off the pistes, in different valleys, slopes

and various landscapes. As a new highlight for

the next season, the resort has announced the

extension up to 145 km of pistes and new routes

    for the Orri area .

This season 2014/15, Baqueira will also have a

new four-seat chairlift in Beret and a new ski lift in

the zone of Saumet, that will allow the access to

5 new kilometres marked as high difficulty, that

in turn will lead to more land for off-piste. Due to

its variety of landscape, services and expanse,

Baqueira strengthens its condition as the best ski

resort in Spain, the most complete and the biggest

in the Pyrenees, and with features that make it be

among the best ones in Europe. Congratulations!

    VERANO BENIGNO PARA LOS GLACIARES

    KIND SUMMER FOR THE GLAZIERS

Gracias!

The regression of the Pyrenean glaziers has been constant during the last decades, how-ever, this summer the loss of ice mass has been lower due to the protection of the snow blanket.

In general, we could say that the trend of the snow-fields and prepetual snow places, as well as the ice-fields and glaziers in Spain, tends to be backwards (towards a reduction in their area), due to the slow but constant heating the whole planet is suffering. But this progression is not uniform, and changes a lot from one year to another. The summer of 2014 has been cooler and rainier than usual, and solid snow-falls have been frequent above 3000 metres in alti-tude in the Pyrenees.

The thick layer present in springtime kept the moun-tain passes coated with enough snow in July, and the highest peaks (over 3000 m) have benefited from a stormy summer that has brought hail, snow and sleet to many days of July, August and September. Proof of this are the pictures, thanks to Daniel Mora Mur, where you can see the evolution of snow over the glaziers in Maladetas, showing a comparative of the condition of the glaziers in Aneto and Maladetas throughout the last years. Really interesting follow-up made by Daniel. Thanks!

LA CANTINA DE COTOS. PARADA Y FONDA

THE CANTEEN IN COTOS. FOOD AND LODGING

Back in 1925, the train that goes to the pass of Navacerrada was started, and in 1964 the extension to the pass of Los Cotos was added. Since that day, the building of the station and its canteen have given shelter and food to mountaineers and skiers, until it was neglected near the end of the 20th century. In the summer of 2012 the refurbishment of the cafeteria was started, and in October 2013 the construction to restore the first floor took place, in order to give shelter to the sportsmen that look for a confortable place in the heart of the National Park of the Sierra de Guadarrama.

The services offered by the old station, today re-stored, are cafeteria and lunchroom, renting of equipment (snowshoes, cross-country skis, cram-pons, sledges, bicicles and winter clothing) and lodging as a mountain shelter with 45 single beds.

Furthermore, the management of the Canteen in Cotos is trying to turn the station into a meeting point for sportsmen and mountain lovers, to or-ganize and take part in the activities that take place in the surroundings, to be a starting- and end-point for journeys of the High Route Guadarrama, and to also serve as a place in which presentations, courses, mountain-related videos, club meetings, exhibitions and so on can take place.

The High Route in Guadarrama is a walk of 120 km and 6000 m of built up gradient, that goes over the main core of Guadarra-ma in six days.

It claims to be a high route like the ones located in other mountain ranges, but with the limits in al-titude and distance that Guadarrama has when compared to the high routes in the Pyrenees or the Alps. We go up the maximum heights and go en-tirely over both main mountain ranges, as well as some of the most characteristic passes and areas.

The journeys all start and finish in villages or places with available supplies, food and beds (lodgings and guarded shelters). In www.al-tarutaguadarrama.com you will find all the in-formation and contacts needed if you want to approach this great itinerary in an organized way, or to book in shelters and lodgings if youd rather do it on your own.

T he eruption of the Ontake volcano in Japan, around 200 km to the west of Tokio, filled the covers of many media in September 2014. the tragic and unforeseen eruption took the life of 56 people, most of them mountaineers who where ascending this legendary peak of 3000 m, the second highest after Fuji (3776 m). But what was not so spread is the fact that this mountain har-bours in its hillside a small ski resort named as the volcano, with a little less than 20 km in pistes and around 600 m of gradient, between 1500 and 2100 m in altitude. The resort is also a frequented starting point for the ascent of the volcano on skis and for the journey of all the peaks in this mountain (as it is a formation of several summits), with the main one of 3000 m, which is where the devastating eruption took place, and which in winter is a classic destination for the Japanese mountain skiers.

FIJACIONES DE TRAVESA: LIGERAS Y SEGURAS

    TOURING BINDINGS: LIGHT AND SAFE

Dynafit Beast 16 Dynafit TLT Radical FT 2.0 Fritschi Diamir Vipec 12 Ski Trab TR2 7-13

Mountain-ski bindings keep evolving. The plate ones are being slowly replaced by the ones with inserts (Dynafit like). There are two main advantages in these last ones: their lightness and transmission. As the sole is stuck to the fixation plate that is, in turn, screwed on to the ski, the transmission of forces and the accuracy of the loads is much better and more effective than in the ones with a plate in the middle (between the ski and the binding). But having no fitting on the toes has been their Achilles heel when it comes to security in heavy descents. This season, many manufacturers have launched different options for the freeriders. Some of them have added to the toes mechanisms of release by rotation (Dynafit), and some others have cho-sen to provide an adjustment of DIN tension on the springs (Fritschi, Ski Trab). Here we show you some of these bindings, which we think will control the mar-ket of mountain-skiing in an immediate future:

A snowy piramid is always a great tempta-tion for any skier, and when it is located in a biblical historical, remote, attractive, tumultuous place, cradle of our civilisation, and it exceeds 5000 metres, we find a mixture of ingre-dients to make Elbrus, Damavand, Ararat and Ka-zbek ski destinations which are at the same time desired, demanding, and relatively unfrequented.

In this feature we will tell you about this giants, how to face their ascents and descents on skis and all bout their virtues and disadvantages. It should be acknowledged that going to any of these moun-tains is a really interesting and demanding chal-lenge, and that, apart from mountaineering and skiing, we can get to know more about countries like Turkey, Russia, Georgia and Iran, curious and desired destinations for any globetrotter, where ski is practiced in equal proportion to mountaineer-ing, and where skiing is everything but a comfort-able and pleasant trip to a conventional resort.

The Mont Blanc is always referred to as the highest peak in Europe, but if we take into account its whole geographic expanse, the Elbrus is the highest summit in the Old World, in the border with Asia.

It is located in the middle part and a bit to the north of the axis of the mountain chain in the Caucasus, in the autonomous republic of Kabardino-Valkaria, which belongs to Russia, really close to the border with Georgia, and about 300 km to the east of Sochi, where the 2014 Winter Olympic Games took place.

In the olden days it was known as Strobilus, a greek-derived word. Throughout the tumultuous history of this region, gate between Asia and Eu-rope, the territory has been part of different em-pires and civilisations: the Greeks, the Persians, the Ottomans... Russia. Being during the Second World War the scenery of terrible battles, some of them on its glaziers, over 4000 metres in altitude, it is usual to find in the ice and between the rocks numerous remainders of arms, ammunition and

Even its summit was subject to a constant struggle to be kept under the flag of both sides.

The Elbrus has two peaks, the lowest one (5260 m.) was climbed for the first time in July 1829; the highest peak was reached in 1874 by a british ex-pedition lead by Florence Crauford Grove, which included Frederick Gardner, Horace Walker and the Swiss Peter Knubel. The cable railway and the chair-lift were installed in the sixties and seventies, and they take us up to 3800 metres, close to the base camp known as Barrels (4000 m.) and also close to the shelter Pruit 11 (4100 m.), which caught fire in 1998, so that only the walls and part of the ceiling remain in place, being even so also used as base camp, despite its precarious condition but with the advantage of its higher altitude. Next to it a new shel-ter was started in 2001, called Diesel Hut. The Elbrus can be skied even in the middle of summer from the base camps of Barrel or Diesel.

Before going into greater detail, we have to say that

the gateway to the region is the airport of Mirenal-

nie Body, a city to the north of the Caucasus well

connected by plane with Moscow, mandatory

stop to get to southern Russia. From Mineralnie,

by car, there are around 300 km. of steppe and

mountains with impressive landscapes up to the

village of Terskol at the foot of the Elbrus massif,

which also has a ski resort with great gradients, a

lot of snow and great natural conditions, not so the

infrastructure which is scarce and old.

Just above the village we find the base of the ca-ble railway Azau at 2180 m., going up to the head of the lift at 3500 m., where a cafeteria and a cu-rious War Museum (worth visiting) can be found. From here, a single-seater chairlift goes up to Ga-rabasi (3800 m.), from where the camps of Barrels and Diesel can be reached on foot. A long and light slope over the glazier takes us to Pastukova Rocks (4700 m.), where people usually go to get acclimatized in the days prior to the ascent to the peak. The day intended to reach the summit, we have to get up really early to try and get to Pastuk-ova around 8 a.m. From Pastukova, another long seemingly-endless diagonal takes us to The Sad-dle (5300 m.), which is the mountain pass between

    ACCLIMATING TOWARDS 4.300 M. (ELBRUS).

both peaks, and where the ruins of an old shelter can be found. The last 300 m. are more demand-ing, and its due to the desire to reach the top, rath-er than the remaining strength, that we get to the summit. The skis are often left in the mountain pass, although we can also look for the less abrupt way, on the right hand of the peak, to get to it ascending with skins.

When descending, we must avoid the temptation to take a shortcut from The Saddle to the base camp, as the glazier has a lot of crevices, and it is the place where most accidents take place due to orientation and losing ones way. The descent has no bigger problem than the enormous exhaustion after so many hours of effort, and the rotten snow that is usually present in the lower part, special-ly during summer. The standard time from the base camp to the peak and back is between 10 and 12 hours.

Even from some parts of the capital, Teheran, the pyramid of Damavand can be seen. This metropolis wont leave anyone unmoved and it will surprise us, because it will change the idea that many Westerners have about Iran, finding an immense, modern and somewhat chaotic city.

There are historical references of an attempted as-cent in 905, and although 1837 is considered to be the date of the first ascent made by the English-man W. Taylor Thomson, it is known that its peak had already been reached throughout earlier history, as the sulphurous mineral found in the cone of the summit was exploited and sold from Middle Age.

The southern face route is the most visited, most-ly during April and May (with skis). The northern face route is mainly for the ascents during sum-mer (without skis). Easter is a good season to try and ski in the Damavand. Although the snow is

usually high up (3500-4000 m.), the cold is much more bearable than the one in winter. The con-trasts between winter and summer are huge, dur-ing winter the snow can get to Teheran, around 1500 m. in altitude, and during summer the heat is suffocating, getting often over 40oC. In sum-mer, the Damavand can be conquered with soft boots, almost without stepping into snow. Anoth-er weird circumstance is that, due to the near-ly-constant hard wind, the pyramid of Damavand that goes up more than 1500m. over the rest of the mountain chain can be devoid of snow, while the ski resorts close by still have a good blanket on. This factor can make it even more difficult to ski this volcano.

    CLIMB AND DESCENT

From Teheran we go by car to the foot of the Damavand across the desert and mountains that usually keep a lot of snow during springtime, and where some of the most famous ski resorts in Iran can be found. The mountain roads, and the way Iranians drive, will add excitement to the journey to the village of Reneh, around 2000 m. in altitude.

THE MOUNTAIN ARARAT CAN BE FOUND IN THE EASTERN PART OF TURKEY,

IN THE REGION OF ANATOLIA, IN THE BORDER WITH IRAN AND ARMENIA

We leave early from the village and take an off-road vehicle to go up to Goosfandsera, a shel-ter that is also a shrine, located at around 3100 m. Then, usually with mules carrying the skis and cargo, we go up to the shelter Braga Se-vom (4200 m.), where there is usually enough snow. Until 2009 the shelter was small, cold and full of leaks, but the current shelter is a new and comfortable building, built by the active Iranian Mountaineering Federation. From here we can either try to reach the peak or make some accli-matizing climbs, which are really advisable if we have days to spare.

With skis or without them (depending on the build up of snow, which is unequal due to the wind), we go up by an endless and monoto-nous slope, that starts to tilt around 5100 m., where ghostly rocky formations and an infinite landscape at our feet appear. The worst part are the sulphurous vents that make the last 400 metres a torment. In this upper part, the ground also keeps much heat, which makes the snow even more irregular, and complicates the ascent with skis, reminding us that we are on a not so sleepy volcano, with a hot core even though the outside temperature is usual-ly around -20oC in April. The descent is not so complicated if there is enough snow to ski, and it can even be a long and pleasant one com-pared with the pitiful climb.

The peak is located 16 km. to the west from the border with Iran and 32 km. to the south from the border with Armenia. It is the biblical mountain par excellence, where Noahs Ark ran aground after the Flood. This has lead to numerous trips to try and find it, all of them with little success.

It is yet another snowy cone in the closest part of Asia that attracts mountaineers and skiers (mainly from Europe), and that has been banned for years due to safety issues caused by the conflict be-

tween the Kurds and the Turkish government. It seems that the atmosphere of violence has lately calmed down, and right now the biggest problem to climb the Ararat is its height and the consequen-tial acclimatization problems.

The usual way to get there is to get to the city of Van from the international airport of Istanbul, and then from Van to take a van to Dogubeyazit, the nearest town to the hillside of the volcano.

From Dogubeyazit we get by car to the village of Eli (2500 m.), where the real climb begins. The mules take the cargo to the camp 1 (3370 m.), where there is usually enough snow to ascend with skins. A day of acclimatization is usually spent here, going up some 750 m. and back. There is no shelter there, so we have to sleep in tents. The third day we go up to the camp 2, which is located at around 4100 m. in

little sleep is to be had, as the next day the fi-

nal ascent of 1000 m. to the peak is faced, and

to have a security margin the peak has to be

reached between 8 and 9 a.m. The toughness

of the route and the height are the chief en-

emies, the good part is being able to enjoy

the sunrise and the view, that becomes im-

mense as we go up. Depending on the con-

dition of the snow, which is sometimes too

hard, the last 300-400 metres are faced with

    or without skis.

To the reward that is the summit, we have to add being able to ski more than 1700 metres of gradi-ent down to the camp 1, which doesnt present much of a problem if one has still some strength left after the long climb.

The best season to ski the Ararat would be be-tween March and the end of May, although it can also be done in the middle of summer, but with the snow line fairly high, a lot of rocks in the middle part, and ice in the higher parts, which is why it is much more advisable to do it in springtime.

THE FOURTH ONE IN THE CAUCASUS

The Kazbek is the fourth highest mountain in the Caucasus, and it can be found around 300 kilometres to the east of Elbrus, in Georgia, which was a Soviet republic from 1921 to 1991. Technically it is the most difficult mountain of the four we are presenting in this feature, but its level is PD (light difficulty), so it can be ascended on skis, and, of course, also descended. In the mid-dle of the summer the use of rope, harness, iceaxe and crampons is necessary to cross its glaziers, as they can have some crevices and the final ridge demands some attention. The advisable time to ski this mountain would be between March and the end of May, because the snow goes down to a much lower level and the crevices in the glaziers are covered with a thick layer of snow. Although altitude is its main problem, it is more accessible than the previous ones, as it is not so high, and this fewer metres become an important difference when talking about altitude sickness.

International flights get to the capital, Tbilisi, from where we have to go to the town of Stephants-minda, 170 kilometres to the north. From here we

We keep on going up through naked wastelands until we get to the base of the glazier Gergeti, where a huge typical Soviet-looking building can be found, it was an old weather station built in 1939. LTIMOS CONSEJOS

(4500 m.) and back. The day we intend to reach the peak we have to leave really early, around 2 a.m., to go up to the Great Plateau and then face the 40o degree steep slope known as Kazbeks Back, which takes us close to the summit, up to a ridge that ends in the vertex of the mountain. This last part is the most delicate one, and it is faced without skis.

The descent on skis is superb with good snow, as the Back is steep enough for it to have a moder-ate difficulty where one has to be a smooth skier, and then from the Great Plateau to the shelter the descent is comfortable and doesnt imply any problems. Depending on the time spent and the remaining strength, one can sleep again in the shel-ter or keep on going down to the starting point, and depending on the amount of snow there is, one can ski almost to the shrine of Sameba or even a bit fur-ther from the shelter if the season is drawn on.

    LAST TIPS

Normally these climbs are little expeditions hired in the country of origin, all-inclusive, except for the meals in the cities or places outside the mountain days. We have to keep some things in mind, within reason.

Extra foodPretty often, cooks or even the cooks from the shelters are hired to be responsible for the food. This means that, depending on the food and the skills of the one who cooks it, the meals will be better or worse. Therefore, it is highly advisable to have, apart from high-energy food, chocolate biscuits... and everything that is consumed in the stops during the ascents, some fancy food from home to compensate, like vacuum packed cold meat or cheese, that can be of use during the shel-ter or tent nights.

Acclimatization A good acclimatization can be achieved by spending some days making progressive ascents and coming back to sleep in the base camp, un-luckily this usually goes against the budget, as the longest the stay, the dearest. Therefore, it is advis-able to try and acclimatize as best as possible be-fore the journey, and to think that extra days are a bonus that allows us more chances to reach our goal. Facing a five thousand as if it was a peak in the Pyrenees is a huge mistake, and besides not making it to the top, if we get altitude sickness, we will have a really nasty time.

Hiring local guides is always a better choice when it is made through the agency, because they usually ask for references about their professionalism. But we must take into account that we will probably never see the local guide again in our life, and he may not be patient, expert or understanding enough, or that he may not have enough interest to care and help us as a national guide (from our same country) would, because apart from sharing our language, he can be more sensitive.

    REPORTAJE

To the north of the main core of Baqueira, and the east of Beret, we find the river Malo (Arriu Malo in the language from Aran), which comes from the lakes in Bacivr. It also means a great space of si-lence and solitude, close to the main spanish sky resort.

  • 44

River Malo is the natural exit from the moun-tain cirque that forms the horseshoe of mountain tops over 2600 metres in altitude, where three lakes and a string of ponds placed over 2300 metres can be found. The bigest lakes are both in Naut Bacivr, and there is a third one, the Baish Bacivr, which is also named after the mountain towering over it, and which is dammed up. Over it, there are some other minor lakes and ponds, also known as the Bacivr lakes, that form a lake string at the foot of the mountain tops that form an open cirque, open only through the steep valley of the river Malo. From north to south, and from west to east up to the closing of the semicircle of summits, we can find the tuc of Bacivr (which names the whole cirque), the tuc of Marimanha, the cap of Montany, the tuc of Rosari, the one of la Llanca, and lastly, the long rocky ridge of Escor-nacrabes, which names the most famous itinerary in Baqueira, and which ends in the Cap of Baquei-ra, the only peak smaller than 2600 metres, whose north face runs into Arriu Malo, and where we can find some of the most demanding and coveted itineraries and difficult descents in Baqueira.

From the Cap of Baqueira and from the pistes, slopes and ski lifts on the Cara Nord (north face) of the resort, one can easily see this lake valley and the summits surrounding it. There are various areas of the resort from which one can access directly the heart of this place of quietness, high mountain and good snow, usually kept fresh and loose thanks to the shade and cold due to altitude. It is a perfect area for freeride and cross-country ski, a wild scenery close to the cosmopolitan and frequented ski resort, and where skiing can be a small adventure in a high mountain environment.

From the chairlifts Jorge Jordana and Manaud, the Cap of Baqueira (2500 m) can be easily reached (see map of BB pistes), from the head part, to the north we find the entrance to the well known itin-erary of Escornacrabes, which is thought to be harder than it really is. The first time you see it from the top it is quite overwhelming, as it is a pipe that turns into a funnel in the end, with a slope of 35o and a little higher in the funnel. The snow is usually good and the difficulty varies depending on where we go into the pipe. If the snow is hard or frozen, or there is a risk of avalanche, we should not try it. Being one of the main itineraries in Baqueira-Beret, it will be well indicated in the resort whether it is open or not.

The Escornacrabes pipe, commonly known as

Escorna, ends in a wide slope overlooking the

head of the Bacivr valley, with a wonderful view

of the surroundings, and it leaves us in the heart of

this location. At this point we have to change direc-

tion, and turn to the left (west) to lose some height

and enter the start of the woods. Avoiding some

rocky areas and small ravines we descent into

the river Malo, depending on our hability and the

height we lose, well have to row a bit in some sec-

tions (snowboarders always have to walk in some

short sections). The descent ends next to the park-

ing of the Orri core, where we can take the Jorge

Jordana chairlift to repeat the itinerary, as after the

Escorna pipe we can choose between different

options (each even more interesting than the pre-

vious one), always taking care not to end up in one

of the many rocky cliffs existing. As a whole, if it is

made straight from the Cap of Baqueira to Orri, it

takes about an hour to go across the section, al-

though it is highly advisable to stop now and then

to enjoy the view, and any spot can be perfect to

have lunch and enjoy the surroundings.

From the head of the skilifts of La Llana (see map of pistes), we can ascend to the left (west) on foot or with skins, and get to the apparent pass existing at the southwest of Tuc dera Llana. This pass communicates with the most hidden and shadowy part of the Bacivr valley. It takes about 20 minutes from the skilift to the pass, maybe a bit longer on foot or with skins.

From the pass, we can go down to the cirque placed just below the summit of tuc dera Llana through a really steep corridor (40-45o), usually devoid of snow and with an ice surface, so one has to be extra careful. Sometimes crampons have to be used, and it is highly advisable to take a 20 metre long rope or line, just in case. If the snow is good it can be descended on skis (excelent ski-er) or staircase-like. This inconvenient access has a reward, which is to ski from the top to the end of the valley, increasing the time and gradient of ski-ing, and above all, to leave our traces in a remote and absolutely lonely area. From the base of the pass, heading clearly west, we can overlap the itin-erary coming down from the Escorna.

    Cara Nord

On the northern front of the Cap of Baqueira, we find the well kown Cara Nord and its lines, all of them very hard, some even extreme. The main ones are Vigneta, Marconi and Passarell, organ-ized by difficulty and by location as one descends the Luis Arias piste. We have included this lines because they are legendary in Baqueira, but we advise not to try them if they are not well known, as they are, specially the first two ones, exposed and labyrinthine. The good thing about them is that they usually keep good snow and that they are really beautiful; in their base they overlap the itin-erary from the Escorna that takes us back to Orri. The worst part is, on top of the difficulty, that due to their location they are much shorter tours than the previous ones, and they are a minor descent rather than a trip, although beautiful all the same. Just suitable for excelent skiers.

ACCESO DESDE ORRI ACCESS FROM ORRI

From the parking lot in Orri (1850 m) following the river Malois the easiest and most common way of entering the lake valley and the summits in the Ba-civr cirque. We will often find traces of mountain skiers that go up this way to the heart of the valley, being the most visited track the one that leads up to the summit of the tuc of Bacivr (2644 m). This is not the highest top, but it is the most frequently visited, as it has a comfortable climb and a good skiing down its southern slope, which is not very difficult (S2, Traynard scale).

The track is easy and evident, from Orri we have to go up heading east following the right orographi-cal bank of the river, looking for the best crossings in some steep slopes, until we get to the lower lake of Basivr, where we either change direction to the left (north) to face the slope leading to the summit of Basivr, or we go straight to the end of the cirque if our intention is to go to the cap of Marimanha or the tuc of Rosari.

The route to the lakes or to the tuc of Bacivr is re-ally nice, quite easy, and it is perfect to start out in mountain skiing. We can carry out this splendid trip in half a days journey (around 4 hours).

    PREVENTIVE MEASURES

All the required ones when skiing in a high moun-tain environment. In this regard, and although we are close to a big ski resort, the knowledge of the land (sense of direction), the weather forecast and to know and evaluate the risk of avalanches are some things to bear in mind, just as we would do in any other trip with mountain skis. Whether we are going to do a long route to one of the summits, or just if we get into the intineraries that come out from the resort, we have to be aware of the snow conditions, mainly the stability of the snow blan-ket against possible avalanches, and to know the route well. With regard to this, the best thing to do if we dont know the land well or if our skiing lev-el is not excelent, is to always go with instructors or high mountain guides who, besides taking us through safe areas, can also evaluate our level and adjust the descents or the trip to our possibilities.

A whole equipment must be taken, including spade, avalanche pole and ARVA, and if we in-tend to do some long route or ascent, we should also include some food and drinks, an extra coat, ice axe, crampons and at least a lenght of rope

or line per group, just in case we have to get past some difficult crossing (which is likely, as we have already said, if we access to the valley of Bacivr through the pass of la Llana, which is usually de-void of snow or even frozen).

It is obvious that the degree of difficulty changes depending on the tour or ascent we plan to do, being it possible to go for relatively easy and short (in distance and time) trips or itineraries, or for ex-treme climbs or descents that will take half a days journey through crests and ridges, where a basic knowledge of mountaineering is required. The nearness to a big ski resort can offer a false feeling of security, but we must not lower our guard, and it is best to act just as if we were in some remote place in the Pyrenees.

We must be informed that all this itineraries and trips are to be made under the only responsibility of the skier, as the resort doesnt have any respon-sibility or duty of assistance. As always, we advise all of you to be in posession of the mountain feder-ation licence to face any off-piste with legal protec-tion and a right to be rescued.

CONVIENE IR ACOMPAADOS POR MONITORES O GUAS DE ALTA MONTAA QUE ADEMS DE GUIARNOS POR ZONAS SEGURAS, PODRN EVALUAR NUESTRO NIVEL.

IT IS ADVISABLE TO GO WITH INSTRUCTORS OR HIGH MOUNTAIN GUIDES WHO, BESIDES TAKING US THROUGH SAFE AREAS, CAN ALSO EVALUATE OUR LEVEL.

In Val DIsere (Isere Valley) we wander between the tradition of its wooden houses, and the modernity of the shops and bou-tiques on the streets. In its moun-tains we can ski between the best pistes of the World Cup, and itineraries of virgin slopes and charming Alpine woods.

The village of Val DIsere is one of the most beautiful ones in the Alps, with most of its buildings observing the traditional wood-en architecture of the region. Strolling along the streets is really comfortable, due to the interest to favour the pedestrian and skier at the expense of the vehicles. Many streets are pedestrian walk-ways, and the vehicles must park only in the park-ing lots, so that a thin layer of snow can cover the streets, as the spreading of salt in banned due to its damaging the environment (we could follow that example).
