Presentación y justificación

• Este material fue diseñado para que los alumnos de la Licenciatura en Inglés mejoraran sus participaciones en los foros de discusión. Es muy común que se les solicite este tipo de actividad y muchas de sus participaciones son cortas, sin fundamento y no ofrecen retroalimentación. En este material se presentan las reglas para participar en los foros, mismas que les serán de utilidad a lo largo de toda la Licenciatura.

Participations in the chat rooms shouldn’t be lonely. In these spaces, you are

expected to respond to questions or express opinions and interact with other

students. Additionally, chatters can be hampered by typing speed or poor

spelling. Often, students’ grades will be determined, in part, by their chat room

participation.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare.

Review all related reading assignments. Mark your textbooks with sticky notes, so that you’ll know where to turn when a topic comes up. Choose two or three key concise quotes that you’d like to discuss during the online chat. Spend a few minutes typing these quotes into a word processor, so that you’ll have them ready to cut-and-paste when they’re needed.

State your point, demonstrate your point, back it up with a quote.

When you have the opportunity to share your views in the class chat, begin by stating your main point. Explain your point with a quick example. Then, back your point up by referencing one of the concise quotes you prepared prior to the chat. Your quote should be long enough to prove your point, but no more than a line or two. Give enough information to prove your point, but don’t write a lengthy diatribe.

Respond to your classmates.

A chat room is meant for interaction, so don’t make your comments in isolation. Offer your comments only when they fit with the topic of discussion. Respond to your classmate’s questions and, when appropriate, ask questions of your own. Occasionally, let your classmates know when you agree with a point and when you disagree. Explain why.

Practice chat room “netiquette”.

Follow basic computer etiquette when interacting with your instructor and peers. Never write in all caps (it’s considered shouting).

Be friendly but formal.

Chat rooms are often a casual environment, but don’t forget to convey a professional image when chatting for an online class. If you want to be taken seriously, present your ideas in a more formal manner. You don’t have to be stuffy, but you should write in complete sentences. Capitalize the first letter of each sentence and avoid the over-use of emoticons, unusual fonts, and abbreviations such as “lol” or “brb”.

Check the spelling.

It is very important to check the spelling of your participations. Your classmates are not going to see you physically, but all they are going to see is your text. Be sure that your text is correct, well written and has no grammar or punctuation mistakes, this is the presentation or image you are showing to others.

Introduction To Netiquette

The theory of netiquette rules is the Golden Rule of Netiquette, do unto others online as you would have done to you. The rules of netiquette are net etiquette and internet ethics rules for effective communication. The core rules of netiquette are proper netiquette applied to everyday internet use.

The internet has its own culture, Netiquette. The cyber etiquette and digital manners between users are the rules of netiquette. They are cultural norms for status updates, email messages, privacy settings, and lists. Internet users are human beings, so Netiquette is human, it takes into account the context of how information is shared. This applies the human condition to the content of the data.

Netiquette, a combination of network and etiquette, is the social code of the internet because the internet is a network and etiquette is a social code. Internet etiquette, is centered around data and its use. The types of data are: text, audio, graphic, and video. Each website supports these types of data to some degree. Since internet use is new and increasing there are new words to accommodate its use, cyber words. Netiquette is a cyber word.
