October arrives with its traditional, delicious dish made from corn and beans, its endless festivities in honor of beer and its climate of increasingly warm temperatures. The year is about to enter its final phase and the energy of a budding summer is beginning to be felt in the city.
A month after serving more than five decades of uninterrupted presence in Paraguay, Citi is infected with the intense energy that characterizes the tenth month of 2012, the year in which it celebrates its 200th anniversary.

Beneath that platform, until some years ago, voices, hugs, smiles and tears of newly
arrived passengers those who were about to leave were heard. These tracks still tremble from time to time due to the passage of large trucks on the road that leads to the port of Asuncion. Amid all these static images, time drags by in the Central Railway Station, which was once the symbol of a country that was moving quickly along the tracks towards progress.
The construction of this building, one of the tourist attractions in Asuncion, was started in February 1861 and ended in 1864. To this end, the British architect Alonso Taylor was hired, seconded by his Italian colleague Alejandro Ravizza. At first it had two names, San Roque Station and San Francisco Station (the latter was associated with the

adjacent square, now known as Plaza Uruguaya), and during the War of the Triple Alliance it served as field hospital.
With privatization beginning in the 90s, the inexorable decline of the paraguayan railway began, due to the lack of maintenance of its infrastructure and the consequent decline in passengers after several routes were cancelled. In early 2000, nearly 600 staff were dismissed, made redundant after a lifetime of service to the national locomotives. Only 25 people were left. The platforms went quiet and the only smoke that wafts into the cavernous place is the cigarette smoke of a lonely night watchman.
The old train stop, under the administration of Ferrocariles del Paraguay remained in operation by opening its doors to other uses. At times, it housed offices of other public

It also hosted art and cultural events. However, these activities were suspended due to the risk of collapse of the aging structure.
One way of learning about and appreciating the history of the train is by visiting the historical museum located inside the station. On this tour you can visualize those years when the arrival of the steam train at each of the 35 stations loacted in various parts of the republic was quite an event .
Grand clocks from 1895, original blueprints of locomotives, old photographs and great books, in addition to the telegraph and telephone, are part of this national treasure. Added to this are administrative documents, personnel files and safes that are distributed in the different rooms. It is also possible to see the original furniture of the presidential car used by former presidents Eusebio Ayala and Jose Felix Estigarribia.

Universal Import is a family company, born from a taste for decoration and a desire
to bring decorative items that help to awaken the christmas spirit into the market. It has been in operation for over 18 years and the journalist and businesswoman, Vivian Benitez, has been part of it since its inception. Quality, variety and beauty are characteristics that, in her own words, define each of the items in the store.
«We travel a lot to fairs and conventions, we learn from international trends to offer them to the Paraguayan market, and choose items that can satisfy the most demanding tastes. We see ourselves as pioneers in the field of light decoration, which has become more prominent year after year in the cities», says Vivian, who combines the two roles that are part of her professional life every day.
«I confess that sometimes I have trouble, because they are very different roles and I have to use my creativity to not neglect any of them. The good news is that there is already a connection with customers, and often because of that relationship created through the media, they trust my suggestions and products», she says.
Meticulous and demanding, she associates good taste with balance and beauty. «For me, good taste reflects a way of thinking and living. In the area of decoration, it is the ability to coordinate different elements so they transmit serenity and pleasure to the senses», she says and adds: «I also think it requires courage and independence from the thoughts of others».

Karai Octubre: A careful man
Once we have overcome the threat of August with carrulim (a concoction prepared by mixing cañon, rude and lemon), we prepare for the arrival of Karai Octubre, at the beginning of the tenth month of the year. Tradition has it that the character will appear at homes at noon and head straight to the kitchen to find jopará, a dish based on loco, a type of corn, and vegetables that is served for lunch. The food is meant to ward off the unwelcome visitor. If a household does not prepare the food to satisfy the inhabitants, the horrible visitor will burden the household with misery and need for the rest of the year.
Folklore describes the Karai Octubre as a short man dressed in worn clothes, whose shadow cannot be seen, although his piri (straw) hat does leave a shadow. They say he carries a Ysypo whip, has a bad temper and is a harbinger of misadventure. The origin of this custom dates back to colonial times, with the Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries, who introduced this belief among the Guaraní to teach them to ration their

food during times of scarcity. Another belief is that it dates back to the days when native people performed the ritual as a way of making it rain so they could plant their crops.
Tradition has it that Paraguayan families tend to prepare jopará on the hearth, with wood or charcoal, accompanied by manioc. This custom still persists, although to a lesser extent. Work schedules force people to look for alternatives to continue enjoying this delicacy. The Mercado 4, restaurants and municipal markets, like the one located on Yegros near Teniente Fariña in downtown Asuncion, are sites where you can find this favorite dish that serves as lunch and as a charm to thwart the bleak threats of the Karai.

Besides being the
main ball manufacturing center of the country, the
quaint town of Quiindy is a gateway to Lake Ypoa.
Traveling on Ruta I Mariscal Lopez and just short of the 109 kilometers that separate it from Asunción, you can see the trademark of Quiindy on the roadside: the balls that await the arrival of buyers overwhelmed by the passion for football. The production of soccer balls is the main economic activity in this town of about 20,000 inhabitants, located in Paraguarí, IX department of the country, surrounded by vegetation and streams such as Tobatinguá and Jacarey.
Another major attraction of the area is the Ypoá Lake National Park, with an area of 100,000 hectares, placing it in the departments of Paraguarí, Central and Ñeembucú. However, access to the lake itself is a difficult task due to the poor state of the roads and it being surrounded by private ranches. To travel through them, one must have the permission of the land owners or caretakers.
There are two theories as to the meaning of the name "Quiindy". One is that it comes from the word "Ky'ïty", a Guarani word meaning "village of red peppers". Another version says that the name comes from the fireflies that light up the nights, creatures that, like the rest of its inhabitants, make it a fascinating place.

Thanks to its skyscrapers and modern avenues that are crossed by the Beberibe and Capibaribe, rivers that blend in with the colonial buildings and traditional alleys, Recife, capital of Pernambuco state, is another destination to discover. The city was one of the first areas of Brazil to be colonized by the Portuguese. Between 1630 and 1653 the Dutch introduced major infrastructure works in Recife, building bridges, dams and canals, which is why it is known as the Venice of Brazil.
Recife is considered the logistic heart of the Northeast due to its geographical location, its two ports and the international airport. It also has all the necessary infrastructure to accommodate tourists. This city is one of the venues chosen for the Brazil 2014 World Cup.
Its tourist attractions are include beaches (mainly Boa Viagem), museums, theaters, and historical relics, such as the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in the Americas. The carnival of Recife is one of the best known and busiest in the world. The celebration begins a week before the official national carnival, and on its main night it attracts up to a million people.
