'TOSSAL DE LA CALA' IBERIC REMAINS At the very end of Poniente Beach, you can fi nd the Iberian settlement of El Tossal de La Cala. The hit at the end of

Benidorm bay was settled in the late Iberian period (3rd to 1st Century B.C.). You can get to the restored area by going to the end of Poniente beach and following the signs from the Cala junction. You can also fi nd a little hermitage honoured to 'La Virgen del Mar' with wonderful views over the beaches, town and inland mountains.

'CAVALL' PEAK &'MORALES' TOWER Other remains from bygone times that have been declared as Cultural Assets includes The Punta del Cavall (or Seguró), an 18th Century watchtower used by sentries who scanned the horizon to

give early warning of the frequent pirate raids. You can fi nd it in the Sierra Helada mountains. Torre Morales (or Escaletes) is located in aside the N-332 road, next to La Cala area.

BALCONY OF THEMEDITERRANEAN A viewpoint shaped like the prow of a boat which dominates the

whole coastline of Benidorm and has been photographed countless times. El Castillo is the area before the Balcony and has panoramic views of the town. Unfortunately, no trace remains of the fortress that once existed here and, before you get there, you mustn´t miss the Old town, the birthplace of Benidorm, with narrow streets lined with picturesque little houses.

'SAN JAIME' CHURCHThe Iglesia de San Jaime is a church dedicated to the patron saint of the town, set at the very

top of the Old Town on a hill called Canfali. It is a Neoclassical building, built in the 17th Century with the typical blue Mediterranean dome. Inside you´ll fi nd a statue of the Virgen del Sufragio, the well-loved patron saint of Benidorm. The Virgin has her own small chapel containing the little sculpture which, as the story goes, was found on a boat adrift on the high seas.

Page 4: Ingles Cultural Benidorm

L'AIGUERA PARKDesigned by the architect Ricardo Bofill, is a long green park in the neoclassical style, separating the old quarter from the newer buildings. The two amphitheatres are

used for shows and cultural events throughout the summer. The park ends at the bullring and a fairground site where attractions are set up for the many 'fiestas'. The park takes full advantage of the course of the old ravine and beneath lies a large drainage pipe which takes storm water safely away.

BENIDORM TOWN HALL At the entrance to the

Parque de L´Aigüera a very different monument greets visitors: The new Town Hall. The unique structure has aroused the interest

of architects and many people come to visit it. The building is like a bridge which acts as a doorway to the green L´Aigüera park. It juts out over the road and you can walk underneath it. This 'horizontal skyscraper' is supported by four pillars. The glass façade is covered with thick slats with the names and surnames of the over 60,000 inhabitants.

PONIENTE BEACHPROMENADEWork of architects Charles and Xavier Martí Galí Ferrater, represents a radical innovation to traditional promenades. Its design

recreates shapes of cliffs and waves, projected to generate areas of light and shadow, convexities and concavities with platforms at different levels creating different surfaces used as recreational areas of leisure and meditation.

DISCOVERING THE OLD TOWNFrom the late nineteenth Benidorm is only kept its path, but it is worth wandering through its narrow streets. El Paseo

de la Carretera divides the old town. The walk starts at the beginning of Levante Beach and climbs el Carrer dels Gats. This is a narrow street with steps and designs made out of cobbles on the floor, crowned by small archways holding pots with colourful blooms. At the end of the alley we come to La Iglesia de San Jaime. This 18th Century Neoclassical church contains the chapel of La Virgen del Sufragio. A small tunnel leads to the famous Castillo, unfortunately with nothing remaining of the castle which existed here in ancient times. You have to go down a fair number of steps before you reach the Balcony of the Mediterranean, from where you can see the whole coastline. Some guns recall the events that crossed Benidorm in the war of independence against Napoleon's army. In 1812, held by the French Army, commander Eugenio Buffet, processed Benidorm for the title of "City of the Emperor." The British fleet bombed the Tower of Piera ("Castle"), and took the French away from the Villa. Back to the Castle and following the railing you'll find another square: 'La Señoría', where Benidorm pay tribute to the people who left us at sea with a statue of Juan de Ávalos. Finally you will find the Colon Promenade and the Condestable Zaragoza Street, a local hero of the war of Cuba.

MARITIME CULTURAL CENTEREntrance is free to this small house containing an exhibition of model ships and other nautical exhibits, such as fishing boats, anchors and knots.
