CENTRUM Catlica, the No. 1 business school in Peruand No. 1 in Latin America in the academic area of leadership(Amrica Economa, 2007), in a partnership with IMD, theNo. 1 business school in Europe (Forbes, 2007), are proudto present the results of the 2008 World CompetitivenessRanking.
This ranking is considered to be the most serious and ex-haustive report on country competitiveness, and has beenconducted since 1989, using a combination of four factorsof competitiveness: economic performance, government ef-ciency, business efciency and infrastructure.
In this edition, for the rst time Peru in a position that raises
high expectations for the future, thus representing an impor-tant challenge for both the public and private sectors. Today,we owe our position as a competitive country to favorableeconomic performance, but much work remains to be done,
especially in infrastructure and in the efciency of govern-ment and business.

CENTRUMCatlica, la escuela de negocios N 1 del Pery N 1 en Liderazgo en Amrica Latina (Amrica Economa,2007) en asociacin con el IMD, la escuela de negocios N1 de Europa (Forbes, 2007), se complace en presentar losresultados del Ranking Mundial de Competitividad 2008.
El ranking es considerado como el ms serio y exhaustivoreporte de competitividad de pases y es desarrollado desde1989 combinando cuatro factores de competitividad: Des-empeo Econmico, Eciencia del Gobierno, Eciencia de los
Negocios e Infraestructura.
Para esta edicin el Per aparece por primera vez con unpuesto expectante, situacin que constituye un importantereto para el sector pblico y privado. Hoy, le debemos albuen desempeo econmico nuestra posicin como pascompetitivo, sin embargo queda mucho trabajo por hacer,especialmente en infraestructura, la eciencia del gobierno
y de los negocios.

En 2008, EE.UU. lider el ranking de competitividad,seguido de Singapur y Hong Kong, quienes mantuvie-ron sus posiciones respecto al ao precedente. A ni-vel latinoamericano, el ranking fue liderado por Chi-le (puesto 26 en el global), seguido de Per (puesto35 en el global), superando a pases como Colombia(puesto 41), Brasil (puesto 43) y Mxico (puesto 50).
Llama la atencin la ubicacin de Japn, pas que trasmostrar una importante dinmica econmica, ecien-
tes industrias e innovacin continua, pas de liderarel ranking en 1989 al puesto 22 en 2008. La tragedia
japonesa evidencia que ninguna nacin es inmune auna cada, especialmente cuando sta proviene delsector nanciero.
En este contexto, el 2008 podra ser el ltimo aoen que EE.UU. mantenga el liderazgo del rnking decompetitividad, considerando que Singapur ha redu-cido la brecha entre ambos pases y dentro de uncontexto en el cual hay mayores competidores.

In 2008, the U.S. led the ranking in competitiveness,followed by Singapore and Hong Kong, which main-tained their positions of the previous year. In LatinAmerica, the ranking was led by Chile (position 26overall), followed by Peru (position 35 overall), sur-passing countries such as Colombia (position 41),Brazil (position 43) and Mexico (position 50).
The position of Japan draws attention. It is a countrythat, after demonstrating important economic dyna-
mism, efcient industries and continuous innovation,went from leading the rankings in 1989 to position22 in 2008. The Japanese tragedy is evidence that nonation is immune from a fall, especially when it origi-nates in the nancial sector.
In this context, 2008 may be the last year in whichthe U.S. maintains leadership of the competitivenessranking, given that Singapore has reduced the gapwith the U.S. in a context of major competitors.
