Park Cinema this month will be “Der
Fliegende Hollander” (The Flying
Dutchman) by the German compos-
er Richard Wagner on Saturday,

Dinner and a Movie (Note
change of dinner venue)
Wednesday, March 18, 2020
Dinner at Titletown Brewery will be
at 4:45pm and the movie at the
Neville Museum starts at 7:00pm.
Please call Victoria (Piccione) So-
beck at 865-7229 if you plan to have
dinner at Titletown Brewery.
The movie is Il Divo (Italy, 2008)
Directed by Paolo Sorrentino. This
film recounts the life of Italian politi-
cian Giulio Andreotti covering a
large portion of his seven terms as
prime minister of Italy. It concerns
itself with the inner machinations of
the man known as “Beelzebub,” the
intrigue surrounding the disappear-
ance of his political enemies, and the
role of the Mafia in postwar Italy.
Italian Connections Pro-
ject - Part 2
Since we have completed our Italian
ancestry project, we are embarking
on another challenge that will fea-
ture members of the Club Ital-
oAmericano who have special ties
to Italy, but are not of Italian herit-
age. Our thought is to compile a list
of members who have spent a peri-
od of time in Italy, have an avid in-
terest in a particular aspect of ITAL-
IANISMO or have traveled to Italy
and would like to share your experi-
ences. Our hope is that not only
will we have a list of names but also
reasons for your interest. We would
like to encourage you who do not
have Italian ancestry to share as-
pects of your experiences and/or
your expertise in a particular area of
interest. If your spouse/partner is or
was of Italian ancestry, please con-
sider including the name and place
of family origin.
We envision this as an opportunity
to be creative in how you submit
your contribution to this project.
Il Piccolo Giornale is the official newsletter of Club ItaloAmericano of Green Bay, Wi.

Three quarters of our membership have
ancestral roots that are Italian which
means that one quarter have other rea-
sons for joining CIA. We would like to in-
vite you to share those reasons. Sharing
your stories will enhance our monthly
events and/or our Newsletter, IL PICCOLO
GIORNALE with conversations and/or
articles regarding culture, art, music, lan-
guage, history and of course, Italian cui-
sine!
If you prefer to only submit your name
and specific place(s) of interest that would
be fine! However, if you wish to expound
on your area of expertise or share a travel
log of your experiences, please submit
your thoughts, observations and experi-
ences to Lenora Rhyner who will share
this information with our membership via
email or in IL PICCOLO GIORNALE .

Carnival dumplings, which
version do you prefer?
Today is Friday (2/21/20) Gnocolar and, as
usual, the bacchanal of gnocchi is cele-
brated and Papa del Gnocco parades the
streets with his court. This prestigious
honor of wearing this mask is voted on
every year among only residents of one
particular neighborhood. This recipe is an
ancient tradition that dates back to 1530
when the citizens, exhausted by famine
and German troops, rose up sacking the
ovens because the bakers refused to bake
bread in protest. Tommaso Da Vico, a
wealthy citizen, distributed flour, bread,
butter and cheeses with other well-to-do
people to calm down the riots. Since then
every year, even after his death, this cus-
tom has repeated itself. Gnocchi were
born!
This is a dish considered poor but today a
symbol of the tradition not only from Ve-
rona, but from all of Italy precisely be-
cause each region has its own delicious
variations and sauces. You can be sure
that almost all Veronesi are eating gnoc-
chi today in one form or another. How do
you prefer them? Today we want to re-
sume one of the most ancient and tradi-
tional recipes of Verona, go to https://
frac1948.it/ricette/inverno/gnocchi-
burro-zucchero-e-cannella/
We are fortunate that our own Richard
Daley guided us through making gnocchi
earlier this year!
"Lucky Gnocchi Day"
By Lenora Rhyner
Last year Chuck and I ate at Piola's, a res-
taurant in the South Beach area of Mi-
ami, Fl. It is there that we learned about
the "Lucky Gnocchi Day". We hope that
you find this tradition as interesting as we
did.
As with many legends, the story has
evolved over the centuries. Legend has it
that it was on the 29th of an unknown
month that either a physician (possibly
St. Pantaleon) or a missionary requested
food at the home of a poor family in a
tiny Italian village. After eating gnocchi,
the missionary left, but the family found
gold coins under the gnocchi plate. In the
case of St. Pantaleon, the poor family
reaped a great harvest the following year.
Thus began the "Lucky Gnocchi Legend".
This tradition has gained recognition all
over the world where gnocchi is served in
restaurants or private homes .One of the
more interesting locations is Argentina
where 50 % of the population is of Italian
ancestry because of the immigrants who
arrived in Argentina between 1880-1920.
The celebration of the legend takes place
the 29th of every month hoping for luck
and prosperity. Instead of "Gnocchi",
they are called "Noquiis".
Personal Note: My Godfather's name
was Frank Pantaleo!
Learning Italian in Full Immer-
sion Style
By Amy Ashwood
Surprise!
Scott Stackhouse, loaded with passion
and drive, is highly motivated to learn
Italian! He began his studies with Angela
Landt a couple of years ago. He has
attended the classes at St. Norbert and
also the Conversation Classes, but the
hours were not always compatible with
his work schedule. This didn’t damper his
spirit so he looked for alternative solu-
tions. Two times, Angela has gone to Ve-
rona and attended intensive lessons at In
Classe: an Italian Language School.
Last year, Susan Kleis also went and came
back filled with enthusiasm. Not only is
the method intense and practical, once
the class is done, of course being in an
Italian setting offers plenty of opportuni-
ties to practice: take a bus, ask for direc-
tions, buy something at a store, take a
tour, attend a cooking class or just listen
to the passersby. All three found them-
selves surrounded by the language and
their thirst for learning just grew.
This week, by chance, I was in Verona for
a short visit so I went over to the school
and surprised Scott. His expression was
priceless! More important than that
though, was that we carried on a lengthy
conversation in Italian! He has completed
6 weeks of lessons, 6 hours a day and his
dedication has paid off!
I’m sharing this because if anyone else is
interested in going, follow the link for in-
formation or contact Angela, Susan or
Scott. I have also brought home some
pamphlets from the school. I think this
would be an excellent opportunity for the
high school students who are studying
Italian at Preble. After Rome, Florence,
and Venice, Verona is the next capital of
tourism. It is a smaller city and very easy
to get around so one doesn’t feel over-
whelmed like in the bigger metropolitan
areas. Being an ancient city, you can find
artifacts and monuments from all of the
periods of history. Over the past 30+
years, there has been a lot of restoration
of the buildings, so it presents itself as a
jewel. The highlights are the 2,000-year-
old amphitheater that, unlike the colosse-
um, it still is used today, and of course, a
Renaissance house offering tourists a
chance to understand how Juliet’s house
may have been from Shakespeare’s Ro-
meo and Juliet. Having raised my family
there, I love it, so let us know if you have
any interest in trying a full immersion ex-
perience personalized for you.
Cooking Demonstration at
Teofilo’s Home
By Sue Milewsk
On Friday evening, January 31, about 25
members of our club gathered at Mary
and Teofilo's home for another cooking
“demo.” Good time was had by all"
seemed to be the theme of the night!
Mary had everything uniquely arranged by
groups as to the preparations of each
course, and we promptly got to work. The
crostini group prepared various toppings
for the toasted bread for the antipasto.
The stuffed shells were prepared for the
primo, by a hard-working group. For the
secondo group, tenderloins were flayed
and stuffed with prosciutto and Parmesan
cheese and rolled and tied and then
rubbed with crushed rosemary, sage, gar-
lic and pepper- before being baked in the
oven. The crunchy green beans were
cooked with onions and tomatoes, the
caprese salad, bread, and finally, dolci -
made of flavored whipped cream in lacy
cookie cups were delicious! Of course the
vino, limoncello and espresso or other
coffees were flowing throughout dinner.
It was T's birthday, so we lit candles on
top of the lemon cake and sang "Happy
Birthday" (in Italian) to him - and Dick
Daley thanked Mary and T for their hos-
pitality and work they did in preparing
this event before and during all 25 of us
members arrived.
It was an enjoyable evening and the com-
raderie among us all was multo bene!
