cuandolatemperaturadelcuerpoesdemasiadoaltayesprobabledañoalcerebroyórganos

internos.Esnecesarioenfriarelcuerpo(mojándoloconagua)ybuscaratenciónmédicatanpronto

comoseaposible.Lastemperaturastípicasdelveranocombinadasconlacargapesadadetrabajo

forestalpuedenproducirenfermedadescausadasporelcaloryelataqueogolpeporcalor.La

soluciónparaevitarlosproblemasporelcaloresbebersuficienteagua.

Cuandosetrabajaentiempofríosinropa,guantesycalzadoadecuadospuederesultarendañospor

congelaciónenlasmanosypies.Eltrabajocontinuoeneltiempofríoutilizandomotosierrasy

herramientasdemanopuederesultarendañosalacirculaciónynerviosdelosdedosdeltrabajador.

obteneringresos.Cuandolostrabajadoresdoblanlacinturayrecogenunobjetopesado,latensión

sobrelaparteinferiordelaespaldasemultiplicaporlatécnicapobre.Enlugardeesto,sedeben

usarlosmúsculosgrandesdelaspiernasencuclillaspararecogerobjetos,manteniendolosbrazos

cercadelcuerpoyverticallacolumna.Lamismaideaesnecesariaparallevaroacarrearobjetos;

lléveloscercadesucuerpoymantengalaespaldaalineada.Enpendientesgrandes,llevelosobjetos

enelladocuestaarribaalcaminaratravésdelapendienteparareducirlatensióndelcuerpo.

Sucapacidadparaveryoírdebeserprotegidadurantesutrabajo.Sólotomaunafracciónde

segundoparaquealgovuelehaciasuojoycausedañopermanente.Esosignificaqueusteddebe

anticiparlaposibilidaddeobjetosvolandooatacandolosojos,ydebeprotegerseutilizando


protecciónparalosmismos.Aúnsicreequeelriesgoparaunalesiónesbajo,elhechodequesea

posiblesignificaqueustedpodríaserlapersonaquesufraeldaño.Laprotecciónparalosojossolo

funcionasiseusaenformaconsistente.

Losdañosauditivosgeneralmentenosonsúbitos,sinomásbiensonelresultadodelaexposición

prolongadaaruidosdañinos.Eldañoes,amenudo,desapercibidomientrasestáocurriendoysolo

sehaceevidentecuandoeldañoirreversibleestáhecho.Cuandosetrabajaalrededorde

motosierrasymáquinas,inclusoadistancia,seproducenlosruidosdañinosquerequieren

protecciónparalosoídos(taponesparalosoídosuorejeras).

PLANTAS,INSECTOSYSERPIENTESPELIGROSOS

Paraevitarplantas,insectosyserpientespeligrososserequierequelostrabajadoresforestales

puedanidentificarlosyasíevitarelcontactoconellos.Usted,comoindividuo,puedeseralérgicoa

muchasdelasplantasenelbosque;sinembargo,lamayoríadelostrabajadorestienenreaccionesa

lahiedraoalroblevenenoso(Rhusdiversiloba).Losaceitesdeestaplantacausanreaccionesenla

pielyelhumopuedecausardañosgravesalostejidosdelanariz,lagargantayelpulmón.

Losinsectosvoladorescomoavisponesyavispas(“yellowjackets”)puedenencontrarloausted

antesdequepuedaevitarsusnidosenlosárbolesoenelsuelo.Sitienealergiasgravesquepuedan

producirleelshockanafilácticodebidoaestosinsectos,debellevarunautoinyectordeepinefrina

(EpiPen)enelbolsillomientrasseencuentreenelbosque.Nodebetrabajarenelbosqueendonde

estosinsectospuedanestarpresentessinosabecómoreaccionaráaunapicadura.

Laspicadurasdepulgasygarrapataspuedenintroducirparásitosybacteriasenlasangre.Aveceses

evidentequeustedhasidopicado(porejemplo,insectoaúnconectadoositiodepicadura

evidente),mientrasqueotrossitiosdepicaduraspuedenpasardesapercibidos.Aveceslossíntomas

aparecenprontodespuésdelapicadura:síntomassimilaresalosdelagripe,círculosalrededordela

picadura,etc.LaenfermedaddeLymeyotrasenfermedadessepuedendesarrollaryconeltiempo

causardañosasucorazón,sistemanerviosoyarticulaciones.Debidoaquelossíntomasdelas

enfermedadestransmitidasporlosinsectossonsimilaresalosdemuchasenfermedades,las

picadurasdeinsectosnosonvistascomocausantesdelaenfermedad.Laprotecciónalaexposición


medianteelusoderopayrepelentedeinsectospuedeayudarenáreasdondelasgarrapatas

puedenestarpresentes.Lainspeccióndiligenteporsitiosdepicaduraesnecesaria.

Todaslasserpientespuedendarmordedurasdolorosas.Laserpientedecascabeloccidentalesla

serpientevenenosacomúnenlosbosquesdeOregon.Lasáreasrocosas,riverasypordebajodelos

troncossonubicacionestípicasdelasserpientesdecascabel.Lasaccionesrecomendadassonla

elevacióndelamordidaporencimadelniveldelcorazón;elimpedimentodeactividadesque

aumentenellatidodelcorazón,ylaevacuaciónatratamientomédico.

PELIGROSPORARRIBADELACABEZA

Lospeligrosporarribadelacabezaamenudonosonvistosenelbosque,sinohastaquecasi

ocasionanunalesiónorealmentelaocasionan.Lasramaspesadasporarribadelacabezaque

puedencaerconunpocodevientooencualquiermomentosondenominadas“hacedoresde

viudas”porlostrabajadoresdelbosque.Lascimasdelosárbolesmuertosotoconessepueden

quebrarygolpearalostrabajadoresdebajodeestas.Losárbolespuedenquedarcolgadosenotros

árbolesdebidoalvientouoperacionesdelatalaycaerinesperadamente.¡Nuncacorteunárbolen

elqueotroárbolestéapoyado!Muchostaladoresmuerentratandodehaceresteprocedimiento

riesgoso.Cuandosemirahaciaarribaenelbosqueparaidentificarlospeligrosysemarcalazonade

peligroconlacintadeidentificacióndepeligros,estopuedeayudaraevitarlesiones.Lospeligros

porarribadelacabezaprobablementeesténpresentesduranteoperacionescomoelderribode

árboles.Enestecaso,unayudantepuedesernecesarioparaobservarlacaídadeobjetosmientrasel

taladorderribaelárbol.

HERRAMIENTASDECORTE(MANUALES)

Eltrabajoforestalrequiereherramientasdecortemanualconfilosagudos.Lasheridaspueden

ocurriralgolpearousarlasherramientas;almoverlasherramientas;yalafilarlasmismas.Las

herramientasdesafiladasprovocanlesionesalnocortarcomodebenyrebotarsincontrol.Los

resbalonesycaídaspuedenproducircortadurasmientrassellevanherramientasfilosas.Seafilacada

herramientaparaquetodaslastareasseejecutenadecuadamente,ysepuederequerirelusode

limasyafiladores.Seusanherramientasparacortarlamalezaytierraalplantar,hacersenderos,

podar,combatirincendiosyotrasactividades.Lasherramientasincluyenhacha,machete,machete

conmangolargo,hacha-azadónPulaski,azadónadze,McLeod(azadónconrastrilloopuesto),pala

forestal,sierradepodar,sierradepaloytijerasdepodar.


MOTOSIERRAS

Lamotosierraeslaherramientamáscomúnypeligrosautilizadaporlostrabajadoresforestales.Hay

buenosmaterialesdecapacitaciónqueestándisponiblesparaelusoymantenimientode

motosierras.Esteglosarionoesparapropósitosdeentrenamiento,sinopararecordaralos

trabajadoreslostérminosyorientacionesdeseguridad.Nohayningúnsustitutoparalacapacitación

demotosierras“enlapráctica”otorgadoporunsupervisorconocedordelasmismas.Cadavezque

seuseunamotosierraserequiereequipodeprotecciónpersonal:pernerasopantalonespara

resistircortaduras,casco,protecciónparalosojos,protecciónauditiva,guantesybotasdecuero.La

motosierradebeestarequipadaconunfrenodecadenafuncional,ademásdeunacadenaafiladay

contensiónapropiada.

Eltrabajodeserviciosforestalesesdiferentealderribocomercialdeárboles.Cuandosecortala

malezaconunamotosierraserequiereelusodelamotosierraalniveldelhombro.Esnecesario

tenermuchocuidadoparaevitarelretrocesodelamáquina(movimientoincontroladodelasierra

cuandolacadenanocorta).Alcortarlamalezayvegetaciónsedestacanlospeligroscuandolasierra

cortahaciaeloperadorenlugardecortarlejosdeloperador.Lacolocaciónadecuadayusocorrecto

delasierrasonnecesariosparahacerlaherramientasegurayeficaz.

Lataladeárbolesenbosquesdensosrequiereunmétododiferentealutilizadoenloscortesdetala

tradicionales:elcortepordebajo,laentalladurayelcortetrasero.Latalatradicionaldejaríalos

árbolescolgadosenotrosárbolesydepie,casiverticales.Elenfoqueutilizadoeshaceruncorteen

sesgotanaltoenelárbolcomoelcortadorpuedealcanzaryllevarlapartesuperiordelárbol,

verticalmente,haciaabajo.Posteriormente,sehacencortesensesgosimilareshastaqueelárbol

estéenpedazosalniveldelsueloysepuedaapilarparaincendiar.Lossupervisoresdeservicios

forestalesnecesitandeterminarlosdiámetrosyalturadelosárbolesquepuedensermanipulados

MANEJARYVIAJARENLOSCAMINOSDELBOSQUE

Manejarporloscaminosdelbosquepuedeserpeligroso.Eltráficoesunamezcladevehículos

livianosypesadosquenecesitanlargasdistanciasparaparar.Lavelocidaddelconductorenlos

caminosdependedelacondicióndelascurvas,anchuradelcamino,tráficoesperadoycondiciónde

lasuperficie.Lacondicióndelasuperficiedelcaminocambiaconlascondicionesdelclima(niebla,

lluvia,polvo,hieloynieve).Lavelocidaddebesermenorcuandolasuperficiedelcaminoafectala

tracciónydistanciasparaparar.Radiosdebandaciudadana(“CB’s”)seutilizanamenudo,juntocon

marcadoresdemillas,paraproporcionarinformaciónsobreeltráficoacamionesyvehículos.


Lospasajerosdebenestardentrodelvehículoenasientosequipadosconuncinturóndeseguridad.

Lospasajerostienenqueutilizarloscinturonesdeseguridadmientraselvehículoestáen

movimiento.Viajarenlapartetraseradeunacamioneta,aúnpordistanciascortas,esinaceptable.

Lostrabajadoresdebenestarseparadosdelasherramientasycombustiblesoproductosquímicos

utilizadoseneltrabajo.Losconductoresdebenestaralertaynodebenestarbajolainfluenciade

cualquiersustancia.

ELTRABAJODELSERVICIOFORESTALYELMANEJODELBOSQUE

DOSENFOQUES

Haydosenfoquesfundamentalesparamanejarelbosque:eliminarvegetaciónoañadirvegetación.

Losprimerossilvicultoresdijeronqueellospracticabansilviculturaconelhacha.Laregeneraciónse

dabapormediosnaturales.Hoyendíaexistentécnicasymétodoscientíficosusadosenelmanejode

losbosques;perocontinúaelprincipiobásicodelaeliminacióndelavegetaciónindeseableyla

incorporacióndevegetacióndeseable.

Cuandoseconsideranotrosvaloresforestales(vidasilvestre,agua,productividaddelsuelo,

recreaciónalairelibre,pastos,cuencas,productosespecialidaddelbosqueypeces)ysemanejanen

conjuntoconlosproductosdelamadera,eltérmino“usosilvícolamúltiple”esutilizado.Eltérmino

“silviculturasustentable”seutilizaparadescribirelmanejodelosrecursosforestales(conuna

definiciónampliadeltérmino“recursos”)quelasociedadtienehoy,estánactualmentedisponiblesy

loseránenelfuturo.Elmanejoprivadodelosbosquessehacomprometidoalusosilvícolamúltiple

ysustentable.Avecesseutilizanlostérminos“silviculturaintensiva”y“silviculturaderotación

corta”paradescribirelmanejoforestalindustrial.

SILVICULTURACONPRODUCTOSCOSECHAPARALASOCIEDAD

Lamayorpartedelasilviculturapracticadaenlastierrasprivadas(yalgunastierraspúblicasy

tribales)delnoroestetieneelobjetivodeproducirproductosdemaderaparaelusodelasociedad.

Lacosechadelosárboleseselfinaldelciclosilvícola.Estasellevaacabomedianteelusode

máquinasgrandesysistemasque,eficazmente,mueventroncosyotrosproductoscomoastillasa

lasinstalacionesdeprocesamientoendondesehacenproductosdemaderasólidos,papel,energíay

productosespeciales.Algunostroncossontransportadosalextranjero(mercadoasiáticouotros

mercados);perolamayoríaseprocesanlocalmente.Paraalgunosserviciosforestalesseutilizan

máquinassimilaresalasusadasparalatalaparallevaracabooperacionesdemanejoforestal,como

losonlastaladoras-apiladoras,excavadorashidráulicas,cargadorese,incluso,losapiladores

(yarders)decableparalacolocacióndelosrestosdelamaderaenlosarroyos.Elcicloforestal


continuarádurantelospróximos40a200añosconlapreparacióndelsitio;regeneración;protección

delasplántulas;manejodeladensidadmedianteelraleooaclareoadiversasedades;protección

contrainsectos,enfermedadeseincendios;y,nuevamente,lacosechafinal.Lacosechafinalpuede

serlatalarasaocortesparcialesadiferentesniveles.

PREPARACIÓNDELSITIO–Despuésdelatalaocosechafinalesnecesarioeltrabajodelservicio

forestalparaprepararelterrenoparalaregeneración.Lasramasycimasnoutilizadas,amenudo

llamadasdesechos/residuosdecorte,debensereliminadasparalaplantaciónyparareducirpeligros

deincendios.Losdesechosdecortepuedenseramontonadospormáquinas(cargadoresdetroncos

oexcavadorashidráulicasconequipoespecial)oamanoparaquemarlos.Estosdesechosdecortese

puedencortarydispersarafindereducirriesgosdeincendios(corteydispersión).Eltractorde

GENERALHAZARDSFORFORESTRYSERVICESWORKERS

WALKINGINTHEFOREST

Thesimpleactofwalkingintheforestexposesworkerstovarioushazardsofslips,tripsandfalls.In

addition,workerscanbestruckbylimbs,trees,logsandrocks.Thefirstrequirementforwalkingsafety

arebootssuitableforworking.Sturdybootswithgrippingsolesareneededinthewoods.Forsomejobs

caulkbootsarerequired(bootswithspikesonthesole,botasconclavos).Thenextrequirementisto

walkandclimboverobstaclesratherthanjumpingofflogsandstumps.Olderworkersoftensufferfrom

damagetotheirkneesfromearlierjumpingduringtheircareers(Thereisanoldsayingthat

woodsworkersonlyget300jumpsbeforetheirkneesareruined).Anothershortcutcanbehazardous

whenworkersusea“walklog”elevatedoverastreamorsteepravine.Fallsfromsuchheightscanresult

inseriousinjuries.Therearehazardsfromrollingrocksandlogsonsteepslopes.Walkingwithinfelled

andbuckedtimberisespeciallydangerous.Whentheforestfloorismadeslipperyfromrainorcovered

withsnow,slipsandfallsaremorelikely.

HEATANDCOLD

Workintheforesttakesplaceinextremesofheatandcoldweather.Heatsicknessofcramps,fainting,

andheatexhaustioncanbetreatedbygettingtheworkeroutofthesun,gettingrestanddrinking

water.However,heatstrokeisamedicalemergencywhenthebodytemperatureistoohighand

damagetothebrainandinternalorgansislikely.Itisnecessarytocoolthebodyimmediately(douse

withwater)andgetmedicalhelpassoonaspossible.Thetypicalsummertemperaturescombinedwith

theheavyworkloadofforestworkcanproducebothheatsicknessandheatstroke.Drinkingenough

wateristhesolutiontoavoidingtheproblems.

Workingincoldweatherwithoutproperclothing,glovesandfootwearcanresultinfrostbitedamageto

handsandfeet.Continuousworkincoldweatherusinghandtoolsandchainsawscanresultin

circulationandnervedamagetotheworker’sfingers.Whenwetnessisaddedtocoldweather,the

effectsofthecoldareincreased.Stayingdryandwarmrequiresproperclothing.

LIFTING,CARRYING,PULLINGANDCLIMBING

Forestryworkinvolveslifting,carrying,pullingandclimbingfunctionsofthehumanbody.Usingyour

bodyeffectivelyandavoidinginjuryneedstobeyourprioritytomaintainyourcapacitytoworkfor

income.Whenworkersbendatthewaistandpickupaheavyobject,thestressontheirlowerbackis

multipliedbytheleverageofthepoortechnique.Insteadthelargemusclesofthelegsshouldbeused

bysquattingtopickupobjectsandkeepingyourarmsclosetoyourbodysoyourspineisvertical.The

sameideaisneededforcarryingobjects.Carrythemclosetoyourbodyandkeepyourbackin

alignment.Onsteepslopes,carrytheobjectsontheuphillsideasyouwalkacrosstheslopetoreduce

stressonyourbody.Alwaysuseyourlegswhenpullingonsomethingratherthanextendingyourarms

toavoidbackandshoulderdamage.Wheneveryouareclimbingupordown,youshouldhavethree

pointsofsupportatalltimes-onearm,twofeetortwoarmsandonefoot.

EYE,HEARING,HANDANDFACEPROTECTION

Yourabilitytoseeandhearmustbeprotectedduringyourwork.Itonlytakesafractionofasecondfor

somethingtoflyintoyoureyeandcausepermanentdamage.Thatmeansyoumustanticipatethe

possibilityofobjectsflyingorstrikingyoureyeanduseeyeprotectiontoprotectyourself.Evenifyou

thinktheriskislowforaninjury,thefactthatitispossibleatallmeansyoucouldbetheonetosuffer

theinjury.Eyeprotectiononlyworksifitisusedconsistently.

Hearingdamageisusuallynotsuddenbutrathertheresultoflongexposuretodamagingnoise.The

damageisoftenunnoticedwhileitisoccurringandonlybecomesevidentwhenirreversibledamagehas

beendone.Workingaroundsawsandmachinesevenatadistanceproducesdamagingnoiserequiring

hearingprotectionofearplugsorearmuffs.

Glovesmaybeneededtoprotectthehandsfromcuts,scrapes,abrasionsaswellasfromheatorcold.

Forsomework,fullfaceprotectionofshieldsorscreensisneededtopreventinjuryorchemicalcontact.

DANGEROUSPLANTS,INSECTS,ANDSNAKES

Toavoiddangerousplants,insectsandsnakesrequiresforestworkerstobeabletoidentifythemand

avoidcomingincontactwiththem.Youasanindividualcanbeallergictomanyoftheplantsinthe

forestbutmostworkershavereactionstopoisonivyorpoisonoak(Rhusdiversiloba).Theplantoils

causeskinreactionsandthesmokecancauseseriousdamagetonose,throatandlungtissues.

Flyinginsectslikehornetsandwasps(yellowjackets)mayfindyoubeforeyoucanavoidtheirnestsin

treesorintheground.Ifyouhaveseriousallergiestotheseinsectsthatcanproduceanaphylacticshock,

youshouldcarryanepinephrineinjector(epipen)onyourpersonwhileinthewoods.Youshouldnot

workinthewoodswheretheseinsectsmaybepresentifyoudonotknowhowyouwillreacttoasting.

Thebitesoffleasandtickscanintroduceparasitesandbacteriaintoyourblood.Sometimesitis

apparentthatyouhavebeenbitten(e.g.tickstillattachedorbitesiteevident)whileotherbitesitesmay

gounnoticed.Sometimessymptomsappearsoonafterthebite,e.g.flu-likesymptoms,bullseyearound

thebitesite,etc.Lymediseaseandotherdiseasesmaydevelopandovertimecausedamagetoyour

heart,nervoussystem,andjoints.Becausethesymptomsofinsect-bornediseasesaresimilartomany

diseases,insectbitesarenotseenascausingthedisease.Protectionfromexposurewithclothingand

insectrepellentcanhelpintickareasanddiligentinspectionforbitesitesisneeded.

Allsnakescangivepainfulbitesbutthewesternrattlesnakeisthecommonpoisonoussnakefoundin

Oregon’sforests.Rockyareas,streamsidesandunderlogsaretypicallocationsforrattlesnakes.Raising

thebiteabovetheheart,avoidingactivitiestoraisetheheartrateandevacuationtomedicaltreatment

aretherecommendedactions.

OVERHEADHAZARDS

Intheforest,thehazardsoverheadareoftennotseenuntiltheyproduceanearmissoractualinjury.

Heavylimbsoverheadthatcanfallwithalittlewindoratanytimearetermed“widowmakers”by

woodsworkers.Thetopsofdeadtreesor“snags”canbreakoutandstrikeworkersbelow.Treescan

becomelodgedinothertreesfromwindorcuttingoperationsandfallunexpectedly.Nevercutatree

withatreehungupintoit!Manycuttersarekilledtryingtodothisriskyprocedure.Lookingupinthe

foresttospothazardsandthenmarkingthehazardareawithdangerribboncanhelpavoidinjuries.

Overheadhazardsduringoperationsliketreefallingarelikelytobepresentandahelpermaybeneeded

towatchforfallingobjectswhilethecutterfellsthetree.

CUTTINGTOOLS(HANDHELD)

Forestworkrequireshandheldcuttingtoolswithsharpcuttingedges.Injuriescanoccurwhilestrikingor

usingthetool,whilemovingwiththetool,andwhensharpeningthecuttingedgesofthetools.Injuries

occurwithdulltoolsthatdon’tcutasintendedbutbounceuncontrollably.Slipsandfallswhilecarrying

sharptoolscanproducecuts.Eachtoolissharpenedtoperformaspecifictaskandmayrequirefilesand

grinders.Toolsareusedforcuttingbrushandearthinplanting,trailbuilding,pruning,firefighting,and

otheractivities.Toolsinclude:Axes,Machetes,Brushhooks,Pulaskis,Pickaxes,Adzehoes,McLeodfire

tools(hoewithtinedrakeopposite),Forestryspadeshovels,Pruningsaws,Polesaws,andShears.

CHAINSAWS

Chainsawsarethemostcommonanddangeroustoolusedbywoodsworkers.Therearegoodtraining

materialsavailableforchainsawuseandmaintenanceandthisglossaryisnotfortrainingpurposesbut

onlytoremindworkersofthetermsandsafetyguidance.Thereisnosubstituteforhands-ontraining

withachainsawguidedbyaknowledgeablesupervisor.Anytimeachainsawisusedthepersonal

protectiveequipmentmustbeusedincluding:safetychapsorpantstoresistcuts;hardhats;earand

eyeprotection;gloves;andleatherboots.Thesawmustbeequippedwithaworkingchainbrakeand

thesawchainsharpandproperlytensioned.

Forestryservicesworkisdifferentfromcommercialtimbercutting.Cuttingbrushwithachainsaw

requiresusingthesawatshoulderheightandtakingspecialcaretoavoidkickback(uncontrolled

movementofthesawwhenthechaindoesnotmakethecut).Cuttingbrushandvegetationhighlights

thehazardswhenthesawiscuttingtowardtheoperatorasopposedtocuttingawayfromtheoperator.

Properpositioningandsawuseisneededtomakethetoolsafeandeffective.

Cuttingtreesindensestandsrequiresadifferentmethodthanusingtraditionalfellingcuts:undercut,

notch,andbackcut.Traditionalfellingwouldleavethetreeshungupinothertreesandstandingnearly

vertical.Theapproachusedistomakeaslantcutashighinthetreeasthecuttercanreachandbringing

thetopofthetreedownvertically.Thensimilarsuccessiveslantcutsaremadesothetreeendsupin

piecesatthegroundlevelandcanbeputinpilesforburning.Forestryservicessupervisorsneedto

makejudgementsonwhatdiameterandheightsoftreescanbehandledwiththismethod.Theyalso

needtoprovidethetrainingandsupervisionforthistechnique.

DRIVINGANDRIDINGONWOODSROADS

Drivingonwoodsroadscanbehazardous.Thetrafficisamixoflightvehiclesandheavyvehiclesthat

havelongstoppingdistances.Thedriver’sspeedontheroadsdependsonroadconditionsofcurves,

roadwidth,expectedtraffic,andsurfaceconditions.Theroadsurfacechangeswithweatherconditions

offog,rain,dust,andsnowandice.Speedsshouldbelowerwhentheroadsurfaceaffectstractionand

stoppingdistances.Citizensbandradios(CB’s)areoftenusedalongwithmileagemarkerstoprovide

trafficinformationfortrucksandvehicles.

Passengersmustbeinsidethevehicleinseatsequippedwithaseatbelt.Passengersmustusetheseat

beltswhilethevehicleismoving.Ridinginthebackofapickupevenforshortdistancesisunacceptable.

Workersmustbeseparatedfromthetoolsandfuelorchemicalsusedforthework.Driversmustbe

alertandnotundertheinfluenceofanysubstances.

FORESTRYSERVICESWORKANDMANAGEMENTOFTHEFOREST

TWOAPPROACHES

Therearetwofundamentalapproachestomanagingtheforest:Removevegetation,oraddvegetation.

Theearliestforesterssaidtheypracticedforestrywiththeaxe.Theregenerationwasbynaturalmeans.

Todaytherearetechnicalandscientificmethodsusedinforestmanagementbutthebasicprincipleof

removingunwantedvegetationandaddingdesiredvegetationstillremains.

Whenotherforestvaluesofwildlife,water,soilproductivity,outdoorrecreation,range,watershed,

specialtyforestproducts,wildlifeandfishareconsideredandmanagedalongwithtimberproducts,the

term“multipleuse”forestryisused.Theterm“sustainableforestry”isusedtodescribemanagementof

today’sforestresources(with"resources"broadlydefined)sotheyareavailablenowandwillbeinto

thefuture.Privateforestmanagementiscommittedtobothmultipleuseandsustainableforestry.

Sometimestheterms“intensiveforestry”and“shortrotationforestry”areusedtodescribeindustrial

forestmanagement.

FORESTRYWITHHARVESTSPRODUCINGPRODUCTSFORSOCIETY

Muchoftheforestrypracticedonnorthwestprivatelands(andsomepublicandtriballands)hasthegoal

ofproducingwoodproductsforusebysociety.Attheendoftheforestrycycleistheharvestoftrees

usinglargemachineryandsystemsthatefficientlymovelogsandotherproductslikewoodchipsto

processingfacilitieswheresolidwoodproducts,paper,energy,andspecialtyproductsaremade.Some

logsareshippedoverseastoAsianandothermarketsbutmostareprocessedlocally.Forsomeforestry

serviceswork,machinessimilartothoseusedforloggingareusedforforestmanagementoperations,

likefellerbunchers,hydraulicexcavators,loaders,andevencableyardingmachinesforplacementof

woodydebrisinstreams.Theforestrycyclewillcontinueforthenext40to200yearswithsite

preparation,regeneration,seedlingprotection,densitymanagementbythinningsatvariousages,

protectionfrominsects,diseaseandfiresandthenagainfinalharvest.Finalharvestsmaybeclearcuts

orpartialcutsofdifferinglevels.

SITEPREPARATION-Afterfinalharvest,forestryservicesworkisneededtopreparethelandfor

regeneration.Unutilizedmaterialoflimbsandtopsoftentermedslashmustberemovedforplanting

andtoreducefirehazards.Slashcanbeputinpilesbymachines(logloadersorspeciallyequipped

hydraulicexcavators)orbyhandforburning.Slashcanbecutupanddispersedsoastoreducefire

hazards(loppingandscattering).Dozersorexcavatorsmaybeusedtoproduceplantablespotsfreeof

heavyslash.Prescribedburnsmaybeusedtoreduceslashlevelsandcompetingvegetation.Chemical

herbicidesmaybeappliedbyhandoraeriallytoreducecompetition.Landingsandskidtrailsmaybe

rippedortilledtoallowtreestobeplanted.

REGENERATION-Inthepast,clearcutsinwesternOregonmighthavebeenregeneratedbyseedingfrom

adjacentstandsorbyaerialmethods.IneasternOregonwithpartialcutstheharvestingmethod,seeds

fromresidualtreesmaybethesourceforregeneration.However,withimprovedgeneticselectionand

nurserytechnology,seedlingsaretypicallyplantedtocontrolthekindsoftreesreplacingthose

harvested.Plantingoccursinbothclearcutandpartialcutharvests.Thekindsofseedlingsmaybebare

rootseedlingsthataregrownforoneyearinthenursery(1-0),grownfortwoyearsinthenursery(2-0)

orsometimesoutplantedaftergrowinginanursery(2-1)orlargeseedlings(3-1)forspecialneeds.

Douglasfir(Pseudotsuga menziesii)seedlingsarethemostcommonseedlings.Seedlingscanbespecial

speciestomeetlandownerneeds,e.g.,Redcedarforstreamsides,Redwoodsforcoastalareas,

Ponderosapineforpinesites,truefirandHemlockforselectedsitesandRedAlderforsomeareas.

Someseedlingsaregrownincontainerscalled“plugs”thatmakesthemeasiertohandleandplant.The

wayseedlingsarehandledfromstoragetoplantingdeterminestheviabilityoftheplantedtrees.Cold

storageandkeepingtreesfromdryingoutareimportanttosuccessfulregeneration.

PROTECTIONOFSEEDLINGS-Plantedseedlingsneedprotectionforsurvival.Theyneedprotectionfrom

animalsthateatthembyuseofplastictubingtophysicallyprotectthemorbyuseofanimalrepellants

whoseodorsmakeseedlingsunappetizingfortheanimals.Removinganimalsbytrappingisanoption

forsomecrittersthateatseedlings.Seedlingsneedprotectionfromcompetingvegetationtosurviveby

scalpinganareaduringplanting,applicationofherbicidesbyhandorhandfertilizationtogiveseedlings

achancetogrow.Aerialapplicationofherbicidesisalsousedinconjunctionwithhandsprayingof

criticalprotectionareas.

DENSITYMANAGEMENTOFTREESTANDS-Seedlingsareplantedinhighernumbersperarea(density)to

beassuredafullystockedstandisavailabletomanage.Whenyoungtreesoccupythelandareawith

goodspacing,notallofthemareexpectedtolivetooldage.Forexample,inanaturalforestif400

seedlingsoccupythesiteinthebeginning,only60to80mightsurvivetoage100.Thefastestgrowing

treeswillshadeoutandusethesoil,water,andsunlighttakenfromtheirslowergrowingneighbors.In

managedforests,treesareactivelythinnedoutsothoseremainingcanusethegrowthresources.When

treesarecutandwastedonthesite,theterm“precommercialthinning”describestheoperation.When

treeproductsareremovedfromthesite,theoperationistermed“commercialthinning”evenifthe

returnsdonotfullycoverthecostoftheoperation.Thevalueoffuturegrowthonselectedtreeshelps

orsourcesofignition.Thesepotentialfuelsareremovedbymachineorchainsawsandpiledforburning

undercontrolledconditions.

PRESCRIBEDBURNING-Recentharveststhathaveslashlevelsthatcanbereducedbyacontrolledfire

aresometimesburned.Weatherconditions,firetrailsandignitionpatternsprovideaprescribedwayfor

thefiretoburnandaccomplishslashtreatments.Insomematureforests,alowintensityburnacross

thelandscapecanremoveunwantedtreesandshrubswhilepreservingthefireresistantlargertrees.

DEFENSIBLESPACE-Areasadjacenttohomesorvaluablestructuresmayhavevegetationremoved

nearbythatcouldcarryafiretothestructures.Removingthevegetationandtreeslessenstheintensity

ofafireshoulditoccurandaidsinmeasurestofightafire.

LADDERFUELSREMOVAL-Afireinthecrownsofaforestisafrighteninganddeadlyeventforthetrees

andanythinginthepathofthefire.Toreducetheriskofacrownfire,smallertreesadjacenttolarger

valuabletreesareremovedtohelppreventapathway(ladderfuels)forfiretoreachthecrownsinthe

forest.Lowerintensitygroundfirescanburnthroughanareapreservingthedesiredbigtrees.

SHADEDFUELBREAKS-Insomeareas,treesareremovedandspacedoutwithladderfuelsremovedto

provideashadedfuelbreakwherefireintensitycouldbereducedandcrownfiresavoided.Thesefuel

breakscanhelphalttheadvanceofawildfireandprovidelocationswherefiresuppressioncanbemore

effective.

PROTECTINGTHEFORESTFROMINSECTSANDDISEASE

Foreststhreatenedbyinsectsanddiseasecanbenefitfromforestryserviceactivities.Thinningofdense

standscanhelpretainthevigoroustreesthatcanwithstandinsectattacks.Removingdiseasedtreescan

helpreducethespreadoftreediseaseslikedwarfmistletoe.Typicaloperationsinvolvecuttingand
