This viewpoint was common in the culture of the time, but Matthew gives it theological weight by tying in the notion of reward for those who honor one of Christ’s disciples. The simplest act of practical kindness, “a cup of cold water” given to a disciple, is cause for a reward (Matthew 10:42). The Christian idea that Jesus is present in his disciples can also be seen in today’s second reading from Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans. Paul is teaching about Baptism. His use of prepositions is highly suggestive: “baptized into . . . buried with . . . died with . . . live with . . . living for God in Christ Jesus” (6:3, 4, 8, 11). Paul evokes the experience of Baptism and links it to Jesus’ experience of going down into the earth in his tomb, only to rise up out of the earth “in newness of life” (6:4). Today’s Gospel culminates the

missionary discourse from which we

heard a passage last week. Matthew wants

to make clear to the followers of Jesus

that the cross is central to discipleship.

For a community such as Matthew’s that

had already experienced persecution, this teaching was

critically important. Related to this sense of solidarity between

disciple and Master was the notion that one honors the

presence of the Master in the disciple. This viewpoint was

common in the culture of the time, but Matthew gives it

theological weight by tying in the notion of reward for those

who honor one of Christ’s disciples. The simplest act of

practical kindness, “a cup of cold water” given to a disciple, is

cause for a reward (Matthew 10:42).

The Christian idea that Jesus is present in his disciples can

also be seen in today’s second reading from Saint Paul’s letter

to the Romans. Paul is teaching about Baptism. His use of

prepositions is highly suggestive: “baptized into . . . buried

with . . . died with . . . live with . . . living for God in Christ

Jesus” (6:3, 4, 8, 11). Paul evokes the experience of Baptism

and links it to Jesus’ experience of going down into the earth

in his tomb, only to rise up out of the earth “in newness of

life” (6:4). His point is to emphasize the solidarity that exists

between Master and disciples.

Question of the Week

In reflecting on the sacrifices and rewards of Christian

discipleship, what sacrifice do you think God is asking of you

today? What reward do you think will make it worthwhile?

pidiendo hoy? ¿Qué recompensa crees que hiciera valer la

pena tal sacrificio?

Our Youth Programs Are Growing! We need more volunteers. If you are interested in serving in one

of your youth programs as a catechists, assistant or core member,

please contact Jessica Lubianski (210) 400-5683.

On behalf of everyone at St. Jerome TMIY, we

would love to wish everyone a blessed and

safe 4th of July! Independence Day, also

referred to as July Fourth, is a holiday in the United States

commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of

Independence 241 years ago on July 4, 1776! This is the day when Americans before us stated they no

longer wanted to be told what to do and how to do it, what religion to practice, who to worship, and

how to live! This was the start of the United States of America as we know it. In observance of this

special holiday, TMIY will not be meeting. We will

reserve this time to spend with our friends and loved ones as we celebrate the very freedoms we have

grown to love and respect! TMIY will resume on Tuesday July 11th @ 6:30pm, when we will once

again be led by Mr. Wayne Pape on a voyage deep into the Apologetics. As always, bring a friend and

your appetite as we feed your belly and soul!

"As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17

Our winner for our Fall Adult Faith Formation class is

Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother .

Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother is an extraordinary pilgrimage

that reveals Mary's unique role in God's

Kingdom and in our lives. Filmed on

location in the Holy Land, Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Moth-

er will place you in the midst of the

powerful drama of her earthly life, taking you through her joys...and her sorrows. You

will learn how she works in our lives today, draw-ing us ever closer to her Divine Son. Seeing Mary in

this way will change you forever. Mary will become a part of your daily life, and in your daily life, you

will become more like Christ.

Class will begin on September 11, 2017.

We will be offering two sessions,

a morning and an evening class.

Monday September 11 at 6:30 pm

Tuesday September 12 at 9:00 am

This is for moms of all ages not just new moms! If you are interested please call the office at (210) 648-2694.

Armor is having their next bible study on July 6 at 7pm in

Flanagan Hall. We will be having a breakfast taco sale on July

9th after Mass. We hope to see new and old young adult faces at

our next meeting.
