Building the Castle Walls

1 Hundreds of years ago, building a large stone castle took a lot of time and work. The

builders did not have many tools like people have now. It took many years to finish a whole

castle like El Morro. But all that time was worth it. It is an amazing castle!

2 One of the most important parts of building a castle was its walls. They had to be very

strong in case the castle was attacked by other people. The builders used stone blocks. In

between the blocks, they used cement. Sometimes they also added small rocks and pebbles.

The walls were very wide. Some of them were more than 10 feet thick!

3 To add even more strength, the builders made two sets of walls. It was almost impossible

to break through them. It helped to keep the people inside the castle much safer.

Grandmothers House

1 Grandmother and Aunt Eva live in Grandmothers house. Today, my cousin Hilda

and I visited them. Aunt Eva made us each a jelly sandwich. The jelly got on my shirt.

Hilda was careful. Her shirt stayed clean.

2 Then, Hilda and I played with Grandmothers fun clothes. Hilda put on dresses.

I tried on hats. When we got tired, Hilda folded the clothes carefully. Next, we went

outside. Grandmother has a beautiful garden. Hilda and I put flowers in our hair.

3 Aunt Eva took our picture. The picture will help us remember how much fun

we had.
