Dirurik Gabe Sin Dinero Elkartea
Linguistic Immersion and Youth Policies Course
CEULAJ, Mollina (Mlaga)
August 2010
Good afternoon, I'm Marta Garca Tern, and I'm a member of the association Dirurik Gabe
Sin Dinero Elkartea from Bilbao. Now I will try to explain what kind of things we are doing,
someone knows already, but not all of us, so I would like this presentation to be interesting.
(Slide 1) First, this is the brand of the association, you can see it is not the name no
money, we can read trueque, barter or exchange with the symbol of the Euro back it front. This
is the best imagine to describe what we are promoting in Bilbao.
(Slide 2) Dirurik Gabe, that means No money, it is the name of our association. We are a
group of friends: four people with different training in sciences, design and fine arts, economics and
communication. The most important thing I can say is we never took part in the Bilbao's social
movements or association before doing the first barter market. Then I will explaining what this
barter market is, don't panic.
(Slide 3) The association is working to promote places where people can do barter and
exchange. Our axis is trueque, but we difference between tangible and intangible barter. It's very
easy to learn. The difference is clear:
We are doing tangible barter when we are exchanging material goods like books, clothes,
household items, games, furnitures...
We are doing intangible barter when we exchange knowledges and experiences.
(Slide 4) HOW ARE WE DOING
(Slide 5)
1. SEARCHING FOR ANOTHER WAY OF LIFE
We are rethinking today's society Finally we are young people, we have degrees, we can
speak some languages... but we don't have what society says it's normal: our own house, car, job...
We can't get all of this, so this model of life doesn't exist really, it's smoke.
Anyway, we found out in Bilbao other organisations, associations and groups working for
another way of life, against the capitalism and consumerism. We are not alone, so with our event wewant to became visible the unknown barter activities of these groups.

2. CHANGING THE RICHNESS CONCEPT
Nowadays to be rich is only to have money, if I don't have money, I'm not a complete
person. But for us this has to change because it's not true.
I have and I know a lot of things, and I can share with the other: knowledge, abilities and
skills, languages, tricks... so I'm rich. Money is not all.
(Slide 7)
3. PROMOTING SOCIAL RELATIONSHIP
This point is very important for Dirurik Gabe Elkartea: If we want to do barter, we have to
talk to another person to achieve what we want, tangible or intangible, because not obtaining
something material can be possible. If we are talking to the others, it's possible to meet interestingpeople and make friends.
(Slide 8)
4. RESPONSIBLE CONSUMER
I said before we are rethinking our standard of living, so also our way of consumption.
Nowadays we are buying, consumering and spending money all day without thinking that's wrong.
Barter is our gun to say no to consumerism.
(Slide 9)
5. 3R
3R: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is another way to consumer responsibility, and barter has
relation with reuse. We want to extend the usefulness of things.
(Slide 10)
6. MAKING NETWORKING
we are working with other groups, organisations and associations. In Spain there are many
of these promoting barter, responsible consumer, 3R like us, so we are getting in touch and
sometimes we collaborate.
