Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

In the book of Genesis we are told that God created everything that exists, He created every species according to its nature, He created everything for communion with Him and within creation. He created man, male and female He created them and entrusted them with His creation so that they could be its stewards.

Sin entered in creation through the disobedience of Adam and Eve and the communion willed by God was shattered. There is no longer harmony within creation. The order willed by God is altered. There is no longer communion within creation and between the creatures and their Creator. Man is estranged from His creator. Labor is now burdensome. Conflicts flare. In his infinite mercy, God metes out justice, yet He promises that there will be One who will restore the order He intended. It is One who will be born of a woman. This One will bring “shalom”, the universal peace within creation, not just the absence of war, but true peace, tranquility within order, according to God´s plan for the work of His hands.

The first reading from chapter 11 in the book of the prophet Isaiah, presents us with a beautiful vision of that “shalom”: “Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD”.

The Church presents us this beautiful image every Advent to remind us that, as St. Bernard explained, in Christ peace is not just offered to us, but given. As we have heard in the second reading taken from the letter to the Colossians on the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, a couple of weeks ago, “in Him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through Him God reconciled all things for Him, making peace by the blood of His cross”.

Jesus Christ, true God and true man, the Messiah, the One foretold by the prophets ushers in this “shalom”, His Incarnation announces this universal peace which He will inaugurate by His Passion, Death and Resurrection. Indeed, we are living in the fullness of time, even though wars still rage in our world, the Resurrection of Christ has brought all of creation to its fulfill-ment in God. This recapitulation of all Creation is possible because God in His infinite mercy entered into creation, entered time and space to transform the universe from within. Christ is born to die, He is born not only to restore the universe but to bring it to full communion in God.

One may wonder then, how is it possible that this be true, when there is so much strife in the world, conflicts flare, we are confronted daily with images and news of war torn places where our fellow human beings suffer, natural disasters occur and many diseases wreak havoc in the world?Notwithstanding these facts, it is true indeed that the Resurrection of Christ has brought creation to its fulfillment in God. The Kingdom of God is in our midst, but it is not yet fully manifest. It will be made manifest at the second coming.By his Incarnation, his Passion, Death and Resurrection, Jesus has radically healed our wounded human nature, restoring it to God´s plan for it and bringing it to its fulfillment in God, for in Him human and divine nature are irrevocably united.

Every single human being shares with us and with Christ in our common humanity, thus, his victory over sin and death is accessible in principle to every single human being. Those of us who have been baptized, have been configured to Him in a special way, we are already participating of his victory. We have been set free from original sin, yet its consequences remain. That is why our intellect is clouded, making it difficult for us to recognized goodness, beauty and truth. That is also why our will is weakened, causing us to do what we ought not to do and not do what we know we should do. Living the fullness of life, living our baptismal calling, embracing the love of God, living a virtuous life is a constant struggle for us, because of concupiscence, the disorder introduced in our appetites and our lives by original sin, our personal sin and that of others.

The Blessed Mother is the only person who, by a special grace from God at the time of her Immaculate Conception in the womb of St. Anne, was spared from the stain and the consequences of sin from the moment that her existence began. Inciden-tally, that is what we will celebrate this Thursday, December 8, a holy day of obligation. That is why for her, the end of times, when the vision of chapter 11 in the book of the prophet Isaiah is fully manifest, has already arrived. That is exactly what we celebrate on August 15, the Solemnity of her Assumption, another holy day of obligation.

To her, the Queen of Peace, the one chosen by God to usher in the vision of the prophet Isaiah described in the second reading we turn, filled with love, asking her to intercede for us before her son, that we may recognize truth, beauty and goodness, that we may fully embrace the Good News that Christ brings and the Church proclaims, that we may respond to the mercy of God with love, that we may walk down a path of conversion that leads to authentic human progress, that there may be peace in our hearts and we may contribute to the coming of the Kingdom when “the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD.”

PALABRAS DEL PARROCOQueridos hermanos en Cristo:

El libro del Génesis nos dice que Dios creó todo lo que existe, creó cada especie según su naturaleza, creó todo lo que existe para la comunión con El y entre los seres creados. Creó al hombre, varón y mujer los creó y les encargó el cuidado de su creación para que fueran sus custodios.El pecado entró en la creación por la desobediencia de Adán y Eva y la comunión que Dios deseaba quedó alterada. Ya no habrá harmonía dentro de la creación. El orden querido por Dios se ve ofuscado. Ya no habrá comunión dentro de la creación ni tampoco entre las criaturas y el Creador. El hombre se aparta de su creador. El trabajo se vuelve una carga. Recrudecen los conflictos.

Sin embargo, Dios al hacer justicia promete que vendrá Uno que restaurará el orden que El desea. Es Uno que nacerá de una mujer. Este traerá “shalom”, la paz universal en la creación, no solamente la ausencia de la guerra, sino la paz verdadera, la tranquilidad en el orden, según el plan de Dios para la obra de sus manos.La primera lectura del capítulo 11 del libro del profeta Isaías nos presenta una hermosa visión de esta “shalom”: “Serán vecinos el lobo y el cordero, y el leopardo se echará con el cabrito, el novillo y el cachorro pacerán juntos, y un niño pequeño los conducirá. La vaca y la osa pacerán, juntas acostarán sus crías, el león, como los bueyes, comerá paja. Hurgará el niño de pecho en el agujero del áspid, y en la hura de la víbora el recién destetado meterá la mano. Nadie hará daño, nadie hará mal en todo mi santo Monte, porque la tierra estará llena de conocimiento del Señor.”

Cada Adviento, la Iglesia nos presenta esta hermosa imagen para recordarnos que, como explicaba san Bernardo, en Cristo no solamente se nos ofrece la paz, sino que se nos da. Como hemos oído hace un par de semanas en la segunda lectura en la solemnidad de Jesucristo, Rey del Universo, que está tomada de la carta a los colosenses, “porque Dios quiso que en él residiera toda la Plenitud. Por él quiso reconciliar consigo todo lo que existe en la tierra y en el cielo, restableciendo la paz por la sangre de su cruz.”

Jesucristo, verdadero Dios y verdadero hombre, el Mesías, Aquel que fue anunciado por los profetas inaugura este “Sha-lom”, su encarnación anuncia la paz universal que se alcanzará por su pasión, muerte y resurrección. En efecto, aunque todavía haya guerras en el mundo, estamos viviendo en la plenitud de los tiempos. La resurrección de Cristo ha llevado a la creación a la plenitud en Dios. Esta recapitulación de toda la creación es posible porque Dios en su infinita misericordia entró en la creación, entró en el tiempo y el espacio para transformar el universo desde adentro. Cristo nace para morir, nace no solamente para restaurar el universo, sino para llevarlo a la plenitud en la comunión con Dios.Cabe preguntarse entonces, ¿cómo es esto posible, como puede ser verdadero esto cuando hay tanto malestar en el mundo, tantos conflictos candentes, cuando vemos tantas imágenes diarias y recibimos noticias de lugares devastaos por la guerra en los que seres humanos como nosotros sufren, cuando vemos los desastres naturales y enfermedades que hacen estragos en el mundo?

En verdad, es cierto, la resurrección de Cristo ha llevado a la creación a su plenitud en Dios. El Reino de Dios está efectiva-mente entre nosotros, pero no se manifiesta aún en plenitud. Se manifestará en su segunda venida.Por su encarnación, su pasión, muerte y resurrección, Jesús ha sanado radicalmente nuestra naturaleza humana herida, restaurándola al plan de Dios y llevándola a la plenitud, porque en El la naturaleza humana y divina están unidas de manera irrevocable.

Todo ser humano comparte con nosotros y con Cristo nuestra común humanidad, por lo tanto, su victoria sobre el pecado y la muerte es accesible para todo ser humano. Aquellos que hemos sido bautizados, hemos sido configurados a El de una manera especial, ya estamos participando de su victoria. Hemos sido liberados del pecado original. No obstante, sus consecuencias permanecen en nosotros. Por eso nuestro intelecto se encuentra oscurecido, haciendo que nos resulte difícil reconocer el bien, la belleza, la verdad. Ese el motivo por el cual también nuestra voluntad está debilitada, llevándonos a hacer lo que sabemos que no debemos hacer y a no hacer lo que debemos. Vivir la vida en plenitud, vivir nuestra vocación bautismal, abrazar el amor de Dios, vivir una vida virtuosa constituye una lucha constante para nosotros a causa de la concupiscencia, el desorden que el pecado original, nuestro pecado personal y el pecado de los otros ha introducido en nuestros apetitos.

La Virgen María es la única criatura que por una gracia especial de Dios en el momento de su Inmaculada Concepción en el vientre de santa Ana, fue preservada de la mancha y de las consecuencias del pecado desde el momento mismo que comenzó su existencia. Eso es precisamente lo que celebraremos este jueves, 8 de diciembre, un día de precepto. Por eso, para ella, el fin de los tiempos, la visión del capítulo 11 del libro del profeta Isaías se ha manifestado en plenitud, ya ha llegado. Eso es lo que celebramos el 15 de agosto, la Solemnidad de su Asunción, otro día de precepto.

Es a ella, la Reina de la Paz, la que Dios eligió para realizar en la tierra la visión del profeta Isaías descripta en la primera lectura ante quien nos volvemos henchidos de amor, para pedirle que interceda por nosotros delante de su hijo, para poder reconocer la verdad, la belleza y la bondad, para poder abrazar la Buena Noticia que Cristo trae y la Iglesia anuncia, para que podamos responder a la misericordia de Dios con amor, para que podamos caminar el camino de conversión que lleva al auténtico progreso humano, que obra la paz en nuestros corazones y nos ayuda a trabajar para la venida del Reino en el que “la tierra estará llena de conocimiento del Señor.”
