most important component for any KVK and it has to made more effective by linking
the trained farmers to various value chains of a given commodity or enterprise in
which the entrepreneurial training was imparted. He suggested three guiding
framework for effective performance of KVK. Firstly, every KVK must focus on
bringing more visibility of their works in the district. The use of mass media – both
print and electronic may be best means in this direction. Secondly, there should be
tripartite MoU between the KVKs, ATARI and the Heads of state agricultural and
allied departments for convergence and out-scaling of at least the five technologies
assessed as most appropriate for every district by the respective KVKs. Thirdly, every
KVK must be responsive to any external source of resources for executing their

Director’s Desk
The second issue of ICAR-
ATARI, Kanpur newsletter is
in your hand. During this
period, our institute and
KVKs of Uttar Pradesh and
Uttarakhand have executed
various on-farm activities
and institutional works.
During this period, several
events happened which
were of professional and
farmers’ interest. This issue of Newsletter focuses on
the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh. We know
the country is under severe crisis of pulses production
and availability. As a result, the Nation has to depend on
large quantity of pulses being export from other
countries, thus getting huge loss on country’s financial
exchequers.
Bundelkhand region comprises of 13 districts. Out of
which, 7 are in the state of Uttar Pradesh and 6 are in
Madhya Pradesh. These seven districts of Bundelkhand
region of Uttar Pradesh has got distinct agro-ecological
and socio-cultural scenario. Despite the fact that the
region has adverse climatic condition, it is most suitable
for pulses production. The major pulse crops of the
region are chickpea, lentil and field pea. Due to several
biotic and a biotic stresses, pulses are constantly
getting marginalized. The productivity of pulse crop in
the region is minimal. There are several programmes by
Government of India and other development agencies
being implemented in the region which are specifically
focusing on improving pulses productivity in the region.
In this regards, ICAR has sponsored the National Food
Security Mission for pulses in which provision has been
made for cluster demonstrations of improved pulses
varieties and the local specific packages. All the seven
