Quienes vivimos en el mundo del turismo tenemos que

lidiar con esto todos los días, productos que hay que com-

prar, temporadas que hay que disfrutar, tiempo en el que

hay que sobrevivir, nuevas y viejas amistades o relacio-

nes personales que vienen y se van, todo es un círculo de

principio y fin. Muchas veces son ciclos interminables y

otras ocasiones son sólo instantes, desde enamoramien-

tos efímeros, hasta las eternas temporadas bajas. Todo es

iniciar y conluir. Todo se reduce a un registro o para noso-

tros un “check in”, dónde conoces a la persona, de donde

viene, qué le gusta, cómo reacciona y pueden venir días

felices o amargos, puede disfrutar su estancia al máximo

y dejarse llevar, sobre pasar los problemas, disfrutar de

cada momento, y al final viene invariablemente la despe-

dida, el final, a veces hay llanto, algunas veces alegría y las

memorias llegan, las mentes están repletas de recuerdos,

de relaciones personales, de fantasías, de placeres, pero al

final siempre se termina, la fatídica experiencia donde se

divorcian las partes, las dos cumplieron, las dos crecieron,

pasaron tiempo juntos pero al final se paga todo, se hacen

cuentas, se define el por venir en base a las experiencias, e

irremediablemente llega el “Check out”.

there are a few things that those of us who live in the world

of tourism have to deal with every day; we must buy prod-

ucts, we have to enjoy each season and accept that they

all have to end, new and old friendships or personal rela-

tionships that come and go, everything feels like a circle of

beginnings and endings. sometimes these things are never

ending cycles, other times they pass in an instant; from

ephemeral love, to the eternal low seasons. everything is

starting and ending. everything is reduced to a record for us,

a kind of “check in”; you get to know a person, where they

come from, what they like, how they react in good times

and bitter times, you can enjoy your stay as much as pos-

sible and let yourself be swept away in the moment, and

then finally comes the inevitable farewell. The end. Some-

times there are tears, sometimes joy, and then memories

take over. our minds are full of memories, personal relation-

ships, fantasies, pleasures, but finally all good things must

come to an end, the fateful moment where the two paths

are parted once more. Both accomplished, both grew, spent

time together, but in the end everything is paid for, accounts

are settled, these experiences begin to shape our future,

and unavoidably, we reach the “Check out”.

de las adaptaciones que Roger Corman hizo de uno de sus

escritores favoritos: Edgar Allan Poe.

Desarrolló un gran talento para el dibujo, estudiando

animación en el Instituto de Arte de Califonia en el

año de 1979. Disney, quien había becado a Burton

en su segundo curso, lo contrató a comienzos

de los años 80 para trabajar como animador

para el famoso estudio durante sus primeros

años de trayectoria profesional. En 1982 rodó su

corto “Vincent” (1982), un título de seis minutos con

apariencia expresionista y animación stop-motion en el

cual aparecía como narrador el mismísimo Vincent Price.

Ese mismo año adaptó para televisión los cuentos de

“Aladino y la lámpara maravillosa” y “Hansel y Gretel” para

la serie “Los cuentos de las estrellas”

En 1984 apareció de nuevo con Disney en uno de sus cor-

tos más recordados, “Frankenweenie” (1984), una historia

de humor negro que narraba en blanco y negro la historia

de un joven llamado Victor, quien, tras perder a su perro

en un accidente de tráfico, decide revivirlo al estilo de

Frankenstein.

En 1985 filma su primer largometraje, “La gran aventura de

Pee-Wee”. El film adaptaba las andanzas de un conocido

personaje televisivo en los Estado unidos que estaba en-

Burton filmará “Alicia en el país de las maravillas” y tenta-

tivamente estará lista para el 2010. Ésta será la adapta-

ción de la novela infantil “Alicia en el país de las maravi-

llas”, escrita en 1865 que contará con la técnica 3-D.

Después de realizar la adaptación de “Alicia en el país de

las maravillas”, su siguiente proyecto será un remake de

su cortometraje “Frankenweenie” el cual habrá de adaptar

en un filme 3-D y stop-motion, para estrenarse en 2009.

Después del verano ir al cine no es lo mismo, con que

expectativas los cinéfilos podemos recibir a septiembre

y a octubre después de la locura vivida durante más de

tres meses llenos de emociones y de historias mágicas,

acción al máximo y personajes que pasarán a la historia

como los mejores, los más taquilleros o los más queridos

por los niños.

Es tiempo de desprenderse de esas historias de guardar

los recuerdos en formato DVD y avanzar, podríamos

pensar que la siguiente temporada va a ser menos

emocionante pero no hay nada más equivocado que eso,

y entonces llegamos a la conclusión de que en esto de las

estrategias de ventas en el cine se nos ofrecen películas

maravillosas que evidentemente tuvieron la precaución

de no competir con batman, kung fu panda, iron man, hell

to send the cast to a real war-zone. In the vein of slightly

more serious action there are several new releases, start-

ing with death race, the latest hard-man role from British

the transporter and snatch; the non-stop action will leave

you breathless, a formula that is also used to great effect in

Quantum of solace, the 22nd Bond Film.

En el género de acción nos presentan varias cosas comenzando por Death Race con Jason Statham que muchos lo recordarán por sus papeles como el transpor-tador, tanta acción que no te deja respirar es la fórmula a seguir, distinto a la llegada de Bond 22: Quantum of Sola-ce, ésta es buena, qué quieren saber? La sinopsis? Ya la saben a pesar de que sea nueva hay un malo que intenta quitarle el agua al su país y llaman a bond para detenerlo, lo más importante y lo que quieren saber es que Daniel Craig va a compañado de Marisa Tomei y Hilary Duff, y veremos trajes de baño usan.Si tienen hijos hay opciones, como las secuelas que les encantan, High School Musical 3 nadie sabe nada de ésta pero por algo se venden gorras, mochilas, muñecos y DVD’s, es de Disney vayan. Por otro lado Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince actuando los mismos de siempre mejor conocidos como: el que hace a harry potter, Ron el pelirrojito y la niña de la pelicula, promete ser una película entretenida para los que han visto las primeras, seguramente lo será. Y por último dos grandes que hay que verlas no por los actors sino por las historias que son muy buenas: How to lose Friends and Alienate People con Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst, Jeff Bridges y Eagle Eye con Shia LaBoeuf, Michelle Monaghan y Rosario Dawson verdaderamente. La que se va a quedar como incógnita es Choke que es una increíble comedia escrita por el autor de Fight Club,pero ya saben que dicen que si ya leyeron el libro no vean la película hasta que alguien les comente que es increible.

You already know! there’s a bad guy that attempts to steal every drop of a country’s water, so of course they call bond to stop it. obvi-ously he succeeds, but not before he gives us over an hour of impressive action and stunts, giving us exactly what we expect and desire of a Bond Film. some might argue that the most important part is the Bond Girl, and will be interested to know that daniel Craig will be accompanied by marisa tomei and Hilary duff. Bring on the swimsuits.If you have children there are obvious choices; High school musical 3 for example; nobody seems to know anything about this film, its plot, or if it even has a plot, but they sell a lot of hats, backpacks, dolls and dvd’s- what can you say, it’s pure disney. on the other hand Harry potter and the Half-Blood prince comes out november 21. starring- well, the same kids as always- the Harry potter boy, the red head one, and the snooty girl- this film promises to be entertaining in its own right, and especially for those who’ve seen the previous installments. Two films that are set to be big with fantastic casts and original stories, how to Lose Friends and alienate people with simon pegg, kirsten dunst and Jeff Bridges, and eagle eye starring new teen wonder shia LaBoeuf, michelle monaghan and rosario dawson are both potential winners. Finally, we are looking forward to the day that Choke hits the big screens- an incredible comedy written by the same author of fight club, it’s sure to cause the usual arguments over whether the book or film is better; we suggest that if you’ve read the book, wait until you have somebody else check out if it does the book justice!

Jeremy has worked with clients such as Converse, Coca

Cola, MTV, Kidrobot and sketches for the musician Beck for

his Japanese Tour. This artist splits his time between

studios in Sydney, Australia and New York City and has

created a wide line of T-shirts, badges, sketches, hats,

skateboard, toys, bags, stickers and posters featuring his

designs.

Jeremy ha trabajado para grandes sellos como Converse,

Coca Cola, MTV, Kidrobot y el músico Beck en su tour por Ja-

un contexto más social, de denuncia, y que apoya y enca-

ja con el trabajo visual de Ilia en el colectivo Btoy.

Su técnica y colores despiertan diferentes sentimientos

en quienes las ven, ya sea nostalgia, impotencia, coraje o

simplemente felicidad y en ocasiones nos hacen sentir

parte de ese grupo de artistas que están en busca de la

equidad y bienestar social.

En República tuvimos la suerte de contar con una de sus

obras, la cual apareció en la portada del número anterior,

una ilustración titulada “Tibetan Girl”, que para ser hones-

tos llamó mucho la atención y despertó la curiosidad de

los lectores que preguntaban: quién es el autor de dicha

ilustración?

Junto a Ilia, comenzó a pintar en las calles de Barcelona en

el 2002 y desde ese entonces no han parado. Además han

pintado murales en diferentes festivales, como el festival

de Hiphope, (Barcelna 2006), o el Festival Decibelio (Ma-

drid 2006), Per Amor a l´Hart (Hospitales, 2006), Borlobo

(Grupo tragaluz), Arco (Madrid, 2007), entre otros.

Majestuosa, única, imitada pero jamás igualada. Creada por

el músico Lester William Polsfuss, mejor conocido como Les

Paul. Lester diseñó ésta guitarra de cuerpo semi-sólido, con

un tablón en el centro donde estaban montados el puente, el

brazo y las pastillas. Al principio Gibson rechazó la creación

de éste modelo, pues no veía mucho futuro comercial en él.

Sin embargo Fender, que después de unos años se conver-

tiría en su mayor competencia, lanzó al mercado en 1949 la

Telecaster, primera guitarra eléctrica de cuerpo sólido con

bastante éxito, por lo que Gibson decide fabricar la guitarra

diseñada por Les Paul, a lo que siguió un éxito total. El cuerpo

de la Les Paul Standard está fabricada de caoba con tapa de

arce, el brazo de arce y los trastes de ébano, palo de rosa y

cuenta con dos pastillas humbucker. Éstas guitarras tienen

un valor histórico y pueden llegar a costar miles de dólares,

los dos mejores ejemplos son las del año 57 y 59 , y por

esta y muchas razones la hace ser una de las mejores gui-

tarras eléctricas del mundo.

La Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, fue fundada por

Leo Fender en 1940, y es una de las marcas de guitarras más

reconocidas a nivel mundial. Leo al ser diagnosticado por una

enfermedad terminal, decide vender la empresa a Columbia

Broadcasting Company o CBS. Y es en este momento en que

la calidad empieza a ser devorada por la cantidad. Se sabe

que hubo cambios para la estrella de la marca, la hermosa

Statocaster, quitándole el segundo control de tono. Mas ad-

elante empezaron a mejorar sus productos, y a crecer su

catálogo con nuevos diseños y sonidos. La “Strat” muestra

una forma más estilizada y cómoda en su cuerpo (con dos

“cut-aways” o cortes), y una pastilla más en su construcción.

El selector de pastillas de los modelos actuales cuenta, por

lo general, con 5 posiciones diferenciadas, dos de las cuales

activan a la vez dos pastillas de la guitarra, conectándolas en

paralelo, aunque en los primeros modelos sólo disponía de 3

posiciones, una para cada pastilla. Y es en esta guitarra en la

que muchos músicos han encontrado a su fiel compañera.

elaborados de caoba, y algunos modelos llevan arce en la

parte superior. Cuentan con una gran variedad de pastillas

La compañía fue fundada por Adolph Rickenbacher y George

it featured a semi-solid guitar body and a plank in the cen-

ter where he mounted the bridge, neck and pickups. Initially

Gibson rejected the creation of this model, because they did

not see much future in the business.

In 1949, Gibson’s competitor Fender launched the telecast-

er, the first solid-body electric guitar with some success,

prompting Gibson to produce the guitar designed by Les

canción y me refiero a L.E.S. Artistes de Santogold. Nos

trae una propuesta muy interesante, algunos la comparan

con M.I.A. y dicen por ahí que la voz de la cantante Santo-

gold es muy parecida a la de Lily Allen, pero la verdad es

que a mi me parece una excelente cantante. Esperamos

que siga sacando mas discos para seguir disfrutando de

su gran creatividad musical. No dejen pasar la oportuni-

dad de escucharla, les aseguro que les va a encantar.

Wyngarden bajo el nombre de The Managment. Este

grupo empieza a experimentar con varios estilos como

el noise rock y la electrónica hasta encontrar su estilo

propio. La banda cuenta con dos álbumes, el primero

de nombre Time to pretend del 2005 y su nuevo álbum

titulado Oracular Spectacular de donde se desprende el

sencillo Time to pretend, canción que cuenta con una intro

muy pegajosa acompañado de un video muy interesante.

Otra buena banda es ésta que inicia su recorrido después

de que los integrantes se tomaran un whiskey, Jack

Daniel’s, para autonombrarse así Los Daniels, banda que

ha hecho mucho ruido en la escena del rock mexicano.

Su primer álbum titulado “Se renta cuarto para señoritas”

ha estado sonando constantemente en las estaciones de

rock de nuestro país, del cual me llamó mucho la atención

la canción “Te puedes matar”, la cual cuenta con una

gran armonía y una excelente letra. Para aquellos que les

gustan las canciones con toques post punk aquí les dejo

ésta banda.

La siguiente banda es perfecta para aquellos que buscan

algo mas del estilo rock-pop, me refiero a “Quiero Club”.

Esta banda nos sorprendió con su canción “No Coke” de

la cual estoy seguro muchos se acordarán. Ahora sacan

su segundo material titulado “Nueva America”. Estamos

seguros que será un gran material ya que el reconocido

productor Phil Vinall está a cargo del mismo. No olviden

escuchar los sencillos Backstage Drama, Let Da Music,

Latin America y Showtime, para darse cuenta del gran

estilo que tienen estos chicos.

Por último no olviden que ya salieron los discos de: Nine

Inch Nails con The Slip, The Fratellis con Here We Stand,

Coldplay con Viva la Vida y The Kooks con Konk.

La tranquilidad y solemnidad de este lugar es única, un

excelente asentamiento para pasar unos días de relajación,

meditación y serenidad. El calor es intenso y los rayos del

sol calcinan la ropa y la piel, de pronto una pequeña tienda de

helados y nieves se asoma frente a la plaza principal, donde la

diversidad de sabores, texturas y colores te refrescan y dejan

listo para seguir con el recorrido.

Poca personas se dejan ver en la calle, parece que todos se

resguardan en sus casas para evitar el clima extremo, eso le

da un toque especial y místico, pareciera ser un pueblo con

vida y al mismo tiempo fantasma, es un contraste maravillo-

so que Izamal ofrece a sus visitantes.

Mystical, religious, picturesque and friendly, these are the

principal elements than can describe the town of Izamal,

where its people share their life stories, feelings, their joys

and their fears.

As if from a story book, this place captivates with its yellow

hued walls that comprise the residences and buildings of

the community. It was once visited by Pope John Paul II on

account of the Virgin of Conception, who is sheltered at the

San Antonio de Padua Convent, a glorious and monumental

landmark that resides in town.

The tranquility and solemnity of this place is unique, an

excellent setting to spend some days in relaxation, medita-

tion and serenity. The heat is intense and the sun’s rays

burn your clothes and skin, but suddenly a small ice cream

and snow cone cart appears at the principal plaza. With its

diversity of textures and colors you are refreshed and ready

to continue the tour.

Few people linger on the street; it seems that everyone

takes refuge in their homes to avoid the extreme climate.

This lends a special and mystic touch, as it appears to be

a vibrant town while at the same time, a ghost town, a

marvelous contrast that Izamal offers its visitors.

Ya no intento explicar los viajes, ni de ida ni de regreso. Soy

feliz al registrar imágenes y eso es lo que más disfruto. En

San Miguel de Allende hay tanto para ver y es tan diverso,

que tuve que apelar al foco selectivo. Sus discontinuas ex-

tensiones entre cerros, su arquitectura del siglo XVII, su

gente, sus relatos y la historia de un pueblo protagónico en

la independencia del país, definen a esta ciudad como un

destino con auténtico sabor mexicano.

I’m not trying to explain the travels. I am happy to record

images, which is what I enjoy most. In San Miguel de Al-

lende there is so much to see and is so diverse, that I had

to apply selective focus. The discontinuous tracks between

the hills, the seventeenth century architecture, its people,

its stories and the history of an important town in the

country’s independence all define this city as a destination

with authentic Mexican flavor.

I am presenting a tour of textures, colors and sights of a trip

If you come to San Miguel by road, do it in the evening to

give your eyes a unique spectacle of light during the sunset.

The city itself is a national monument, walk through it and

pay attention to detail. Notice that there are no modern

buildings. Observe and enjoy the colonial mansions, the

details of the hand-carved wood doors, wrought iron balco-

nies and churches.

Be careful when crossing the street in San Miguel: there are

no traffic lights.

Also visit the regional markets, let your sense of taste fall

in love with the local flavors, feel the colonial atmosphere

Vas en el avión y de pronto, algo dentro de ti sabe que has

llegado al otro lado del Mundo, en realidad el vuelo no es

mucho más largo que ir a Europa, o viajar a Sudamérica,

sin embargo, sabes que algo diferente te espera. Así es,

Japón está al otro lado del mundo.

El avión aterriza y todo cambia. Las instrucciones de todo

ahora están en japonés, el inglés ayuda, pero la realidad

es que no lo hablan tan fluído como para verdaderamente

entablar una conversación.

Y el aeropuerto… Tan aeropuerto como todos los del mun-

do, colores neutros, letreros brillantes, aduanas, filas, y al

final, un sello que victorioso confirma tu llegada a la tierra

del sol naciente, pero no es hasta que tomas el tren que

te lleva de Narita hacia Tokio, que en realidad Japón te re-

cibe.

Son 10 minutos de oscuridad dentro de un túnel. y de pron-

to, la luz te recibe. Una pequeña bruma cubre enormes

árboles que protegen un pequeño sembradío al costado

de las vías. y a lo lejos, un hombre pasa con una pequeña

bicicleta, y entonces, sabes que has llegado. La ténue luz

que se filtra entre la bruma y las núbes que me seguirán

hasta el final de mi recorrido, se refleja lentamente en los

sembradíos que parece que flotan sobre un pequeño lago.

Las casas japonesas con sus tipicos techos y persianas de

madera empiezan a rodear la zona, y la ciudad se ve cada

vez mas cerca. Entonces, después de un segundo túnel,

todo cambia, al salir de él encuentras modernidad e hiper-

modernidad. Grandes edificios coorporativos con hoteles

en la cima cuyos lobbies empiezan en el piso 26. Enormes

letreros de neón que esperan pacientes durante el día para

encenderse frenéticos a partir de las 6 de la tarde, cuando

el sol empieza a desaparecer, pero sus ciudadanos no es-

tán ni cerca de estar listos para descansar. Todo sorpren-

de, todo llama, todo es diferente.

El desconocer completamente el idioma es parte funda-

mental de la experiencia, pues poco a poco dejas de ser

tan racional, y empiezas a funcionar casi por instinto. ellos

no te entienden, tu no les vas a entender, así que, que mas

dá, solo queda caminar, admirar, sorprenderse ante todo.

El buen mapa a la mano hará las veces de guía, traductor,

bandera blanca, llamada de auxilio, y una a una irá cum-

pliendo sus funciones a lo largo del viaje por oriente.

Finalmente en un mundo globalizado, nadie esta excento

de la occidentalización de la cultura, sin embargo, Japón se

sabe orgulloso de sus raíces, su gente, amante del con-

sumismo se mantiene respetuosa en todo momento con

lo distinto, lo ajeno, en este caso, uno mismo. Y son las

diferencias en la cultura las que hacen que en sí, la ciudad

y su gente se vuelvan aún mas interesantes.

El metro siempre va lleno, a todas partes, a todas horas,

sin embargo, al abrirse las puertas, la gente que espera

entrar a toda costa, no pone un pie dentro del vagón hasta

que todo aquel que quiera bajar lo haya hecho. Los em-

pujones y la incomodidad es normal, pero no se percibe

ninguna malicia ni perversión en sus actitudes, un profun-

do respeto, que también se puede explicar como un aisla-

miento colectivo.

Mares de gente se reúnen en Shibuya durante todo el día, y

bajo sus enormes pantallas en los edificios que además de

imágen emiten sonido, el ruido de la gente, el transitar

cruce de peatones mas grande del mundo, es rarísimo ver

que una persona choque contra otra, aún cuando la gran

mayoría vienen interactuando con sus celulares sin mirar

a quien los rodea.

Comunicarte con álguien para pedir indicaciones, ordenar

comida, comprar cualquier cosa, etc. es una experiencia

increíble. El lenguaje verbal no funciona, y es entonces

que uno puede expresarse como ser humano, no como

mexicano, mujer, hombre, blanco, negro, etc… Ser Huma-

no. Señas universales, movimientos y expresiones facia-

les que se tienen que interpretar, no traducir. Se eleva la

bondad de quien quiera ayudar al necesitado, aunque seas

tu peleándote con una de las miles de máquinas de refres-

cos que viven en las calles de las ciudades y cuyas tapas

se abren diferente.

Calles que no duermen , edificios que en el primer piso

tienen una estética, pero en el segundo un bar latino, en

el tercero un striptease, y en el cuarto un jardín de niños.

Grandes coorporativos que día a día reciben a miles de

hombres y mujeres vestidos con trajes negros en su ma-

yoría, que tienen un instante para detenerse a comprar un

café que se tomarán en el trayecto de la cola del minisuper

al bote de basura en la salida.

Hombres y mujeres con tintes de pelo naranjas, y cortes

de pelo que oscilan desde el mas convencional hasta uno

salido de una caricatura japonesa.

Templos maravillosos y jardínes impresionantes escondi-

dos en el centro de la ciudad, con gente que llega a orar y

patios centrales con puertas enormes por donde sus dei-

dades pasan cada determinado tiempo, y en donde no se

pueden sacar fotos.

Y dentro de todo, cultura, cultura visual, cultura social,

cultura auditiva, cultura olfativa, todo es distinto, todo es

llamativo, y entonces entendemos porque cuando ellos

vienen a nuestro lado del mundo, le toman fotos a todo…

porque así nos vemos nosotros allá… tomandole fotos a

todo. Así de distintos somos. Así de parecidos somos.

Como todo, el final llega, y el viaje termina. La maleta re-

gresa repleta de chucherías y curiosidades que de vuelta

en casa llamarán la atención y harán sonreir a unos cuan-

tos. El avión empieza a perder su misterio oriental, y reto-

ma su típica forma. Por la ventanilla, la ciudad se pierde, y

son campos de te y de arroz perfectamente organizados; y

se pierden lentamente. Y al llegar a la costa, se observa la

dimensión de isla, el mar rompiendo contra la bahía con

fuerza y en un claroscuro que me regala esta lejana tierra,

prometo regresar, pues dentro de tanta diferencia, uno se

termina encontrando… en oriente.

You’re on a plane, and soon, you just know that you have

arrived on the other side of the World. In reality, the flight

is not much longer than traveling to Europe or to South

America; however, you know that something truly different

awaits you. Japan IS on the other side of the world.

The plane lands and everything changes. The instructions

for everything are now in Japanese, English helps, but truth-

fully, they do not speak it fluently enough to truly carry on a

conversation.

And the airport….just like all others

of the world, neutral colors, brilliant

signs, customs, lines, and at the end

of the process, the victorious stamp

confirming your arrival in the land of

the rising sun. But it is not until you

board the train that takes you from Narita to Tokyo, that Ja-

pan truly welcomes you.

Ten minutes of darkness inside a tunnel and suddenly the

light greets you. A soft mist clings to the enormous trees

that shade a small field of crops along the railway and in the

distance a man peddles by on a small bike, then, you real-

ize you have arrived. The faint light that filters through the

mist and clouds slowly reflect on the fields that appear to

be floating on a small lake and it keeps me company until I

reach my destination.

Japanese houses with their typical roofs and wooden shut-

ters begin to encircle the landscape and the city draws

closer. Then, after a second tunnel, everything changes, and

you find yourself immersed in modernity and hypermoder-

nity: large corporate buildings with hotels at the top whose

lobbies start on the 26th floor, enormous neon signs wait-

ing patiently during the day to frenetically illuminate at 6pm

when the sun begins to disappear, although the thought of

rest has not even entered the locals’ minds. Everything as-

tonishes, everything siezes your attention, and everything

is different.

Complete ignorance of the language

is paramount to the experience,

as little by little you stop behaving

so rationally and begin to function

almost instinctively. They do not

understand you, you will not under-

stand them, so there is not much more that you can do than

walk, admire, and allow yourself to be awed by everything.

A good map at hand will serve as guide, translator, white

flag, and a cry for help and will complete its functions, one by

one throughout the trip through the Orient. Ultimately in this

global world, no one is exempt from the Westernization of

culture; however, Japan is proud of its roots, its people, lov-

ers of consumerism while maintaining a respect at all times

for the diverse, the foreign and in this case in particular, me.

It is these cultural differences in itself that make the city and

its people even more interesting.

no one is exempt from the west-ernization of culture; howeVer, japan is proud of its roots, its people, loVers of consumerism while maintaining a respect at

embarked. Jostling and discomfort is normal, but at no time

lor, a second floor Latin bar, a third floor striptease and on

the fourth, a day care center. Large corporations that daily

receive millions of men and woman, the majority dressed

in black suites, who have just a brief moment to purchase

a coffee, one that will be consumed in the time it takes for

them to get through the mini super queue that ends at the

exit where a trash can awaits. Men and woman with hair

dyed orange and hair cuts that range from the most conven-

tional to a copy of a Japanese cartoon character.

Marvelous temples and impressive gardens are hidden in

the city center where people come to pray and central pla-

zas astound with their gigantic doors behind which their

deities reside and where pictures cannot be taken. And per-

meating throughout, CULTURE: visual, social, auditory, and

olfactory. Everything is distinctive, everything catches your

eye. Now we can understand why they take pictures of ev-

erything when they visit our part of the world. We act as

they do upon encountering ourselves in theirs. That is how

very different we are and, how very much alike.

As with everything, the end draws near, and the trip wraps

up. The suitcase returns home replete with mementos

and trinkets that will elicit curiosity and some laughs from

many. The plane begins to lose its mysterious Orient-ness

and retakes its normal shape. From the window, the city

drops out of sight and the fields of perfectly organized rice

and tea slowly fade away. And upon arriving to the coast,

one can observe the island’s dimension, the sea break-

ing against the bay with force and in the twilight that this

far away land has gifted me, I make a promise to return. It

seems that surrounded by so many contrasts, one ends up

finding oneself…in the Orient.

eVerything is distinctiVe, eVerything catches your eye. now we can under-stand why they take pictures of eVery-thing when they Visit our part of the

world. we act as they do upon encoun-tering ourselVes in theirs. that is how Very different we are and, how Very

much alike.

No hay agua, no hay comida, un periodo de escasez ace-

cha la tierra y cinco hombres deciden enviar un mensaje

al dios de la fertilidad Xipe Totec, pidiendo el regreso de

las lluvias y la abundancia en la cosecha. Adentrándo-

se en el bosque buscan el árbol más alto posible, una

vez encontrado, piden al espíritu árbol que los ayude, lo

bendicen, lo libran de hojas y ramas, colocándolo en un

lugar especial y bendecido, los 5 hombres cubren sus

cuerpos de plumas simulando a un pájaro con el fin de

llamar la atención de los dioses. Con cuerdas amarradas

a sus cuerpos y al inmenso tronco, emprenden el vuelo

alrededor de éste, rogando a sus deidades escuchen sus

plegarias.

the land and five men choose to send a message to the

fertility god xipe totec asking for the return of the rains

and abundant harvests. delving into the forest, they look

for the tallest possible tree, once they find it, they ask the

tree spirit to help them, they bless it, strip it of its leaves

and bark, cut it and place it in a special, sacred place, the

five men then cover their bodies with feathers to appear

as birds in order to call attention to the gods. With ropes

moored to their bodies and wrapped around the immense

trunk, they take flight, praying to their deities in the hope

that their pleas will be heard.

Con más de mil años de existencia y transmitida de

padres a hijos, esta ceremonia consta de 4 hombres

que efectúan rotaciones alrededor de un poste de 30

metros de altura con a una cuerda amarrada a su cuerpo

y envuelta alrededor del poste. La cuerda se desenvuelve

a medida en que las rotaciones se efectúan a un ritmo

lento.

El número de vueltas realizadas por los 4 hombres en

torno al poste es de 52 (4 voladores, 13 vueltas cada uno).

El número 13 corresponde al número de meses en el ca-

lendario Maya y el número 52 es el número de semanas

en un año. Un quinto volador, el caporal, baila en la cima

del poste, gira hacia los cuatro puntos cardinales, co-

ser humano: la acrobacia. A los mejores cazadores de

esa época se les considera los acróbatas pioneros, pues

aunaban habilidad, agilidad, flexibilidad, fuerza y equilibrio.

En un principio usaban utensilios cotidianos como jarras

y platos, pero cuando muchos de ellos fueron recluta-

dos como soldados, cambiaron sus herramientas por

jabalinas y arcos. Actualmente, China alberga alrededor

de 50 mil acróbatas, que lo convierten en el país con más

artistas de este tipo del mundo.

de otros tipos, no existía sino hasta finales del siglo XIII,

y fue desarrollado en Inglaterra por Philip Astley, un ex

soldado y sobresaliente entrenador de caballos.

Después de dejar la armada, Astley abrió una escuela de

“suertes ecuestres” cuya arena –o pista– medía 13 metros

de diámetro, el tamaño perfecto para que un caballo

corra cómodamente a todo galope y provoque la fuerza

centrífuga que permite a los jinetes mantener el balance

necesario. Al ser redonda, el público lograba ver desde

cualquier ángulo lo que pasaba dentro de la pista.

By this time several companies were

able to travel around the world, and

mexico was no exception. In fact, the

first elephant that was seen in Aztec

lands was mogul, in 1832, when he

arrived as part of a circus. after his

death he was sold to “snack makers”

and his skeleton was displayed as a

prehistoric animal.

Its new ability to move locations in

to. Muchos circos desaparecieron por falta de audiencia,

algunos lograron mantenerse con vida al asociarse con

otras compañías, y muchos otros se adaptaron a los

nuevos tiempos, siendo la corriente Cirque Nouveau una

de las más notables, caracterizada por la influencia que

la cultura contemporánea y la historia del circo tienen en

su espectáculo. El mejor ejemplo de esta corriente es el

Cirque du Soleil, compañía canadiense que nació en 1984

por iniciativa de un grupo de artistas callejeros, y que en

menos de veinte años se ha convertido en la empresa de

espectáculos en vivo más fastuosa del mundo.

Todos sabemos del graffiti y hemos escuchado hablar

del reconocimiento que ha tenido últimamente, ya no

sólo como una actividad “callejera”, sino como arte. Las

paredes de casas y edificios ahora hablan de algo más

que sólo rayones para marcar territorio que a muchos

siguen sin hacerles sentido y que han migrado de los

exteriores a los interiores, de ser casi un acto de vanda-

lismo a convertirse en una clase de muralismo en aerosol

e incluso en un performance, llegando a ser los mismos

propietarios, quienes permitan que estos artistas usen

sus inmuebles como lienzo.

Ahora bien, si la forma de ver al graffiti ha cambiado

¿Porqué no cambiar el medio que se usa para hacerlo? En

el último par de años, surgió una nueva forma de hacer

graffiti a partir de una tecnología que

ya existía desde hace mucho tiempo, y

que a pesar de ser más costosa que el

aerosol, es relativamente más perdura-

ble: el LED (light-emitting diode). Y otra

forma, un tanto más efímera pero igual

de innovadora en su uso: el láser.

Esta nueva forma de hacer graffiti, se

está practicando en distintas partes del

mundo y se presume que surgió con un

We all know about graffiti and have heard about the rec-

ognition it has gotten lately, not as a “street” activity, but

as art. the walls of houses and buildings now talk about

something else than just scratches to mark territory which

is still seen as non-sense for a lot of people. It has migrated

inside out, from being almost an act of vandalism, and

turned in to a kind of ‘spray muralism’, even a performance,

so that the owners themselves allow these artists to use

their properties as a canvas.

Now, if the way of perceive graffiti has changed, why not

change the means used to create it? In the last couple of

years, a new way to do graffiti has evolved from a technol-

ogy that already existed a long time ago. despite being

more expensive than spray panit, is quite more enduring:

the Led (light-emitting diode). another

way, somewhat more ephemeral but just

as innovative in its use: the laser.

This new way of doing graffiti is being

practiced in different parts of the world

intervención de mobiliario urbano, etc.). Debido al uso de

ésta tecnología, al graffiti se le ha dado una nueva pers-

pectiva. Sí, utilizándolo como un medio de expresión, con

una protesta fundamentada, pero haciéndolo totalmente

disruptivo en relación al graffiti tradicional que probable-

mente ya no haga diferencia en nuestro campo visual

urbano tan saturado.

El graffiti de LED’s se puede hace de varias formas,

preparando previamente el espacio que se utilizará con

pintura magnética en el caso de que se quiera establecer

un circuito o serie antes de pintar y colocar los LED’s o

simplemente armando cada LED de forma independiente

o en serie con una batería y un imán para fijarlo a super-

ficies metálicas, como puentes, postes y estructuras de

edificios.

En el caso del graffiti con láser pasa lo contrario, es una

intervención más allá del uso de la tecnología como tal,

se trata de encontrar el edificio, monumento o estructura

icónica ideal para que el mensaje trascienda por el hecho

de haber estado ahí aunque sólo sea por segundos y de

cuánta gente está expuesta a ese mensaje.

Si están interesados en conocer más sobre las distin-

tas aplicaciones de la tecnología en el ámbito artístico,

les recomiendo comenzar con el Graffiti Research Lab

conocidos por inventar los LED-throwies y en cuyo sitio

pueden encontrar material que documenta aplicaciones

de la tecnología. Es importante mencionar que cada vez

más países desarrollados están usándolo para sustituir al

foco tradicional para ahorrar energía y costos a largo pla-

zo, como es el caso de Canadá y su Torre CN qu eutiluza

LED’s por la noche.

Yes, using it as a means of expression, as in its beginnings,

far it could be manipulated. It is about finding the building,

monument or iconic and ideal structure, so the message

transcends the facts of being there, at least for a few

seconds, to see how many people are exposed to the

message.

de despertar. Sí, señor, duermo en pijamita de franela, así

que no empieces a pensar cochinadas.

Me pongo una batita, salgo a la calle por el periódico y le

doy los buenos días al joven que recoge la basura. Este se

voltea y me dice con una voz artificial como salida de los

Supersónicos: “De-nada-que-tenga-un-buen-día”. Volteo

a verlo, me doy cuenta de que en realidad se trata de un

robot y me da el “soponcio”.

Lo anterior es un caso hipotético pero no estamos tan le-

jos de que suceda. Yo nada más te estoy previniendo para

que así como yo en mi pequeña historia, no te me vayas

a desmayar ahí en plena calle con tu batita medio abierta,

por más pijama de franelita que traigas.

¿A qué viene toda esta historietita? Me regalaron un robot

en mi cumpleaños. Un R2D2 (o Arturito, para algunos)

famosísimo robotito simpático de Star wars. Y, O.K. no es

tamaño real y no, desgraciadamente no es el que proyec-

ta películas y que cuesta como $50,000 pesos. Pero no te

Yo estaba encantada con mi cosita esta cuando un

amigo me enseñó que existen más robots. No sólo

para compañía sino para todo lo que se te ocurra

que no puedas hacer tú mismo. Para cuidar tu casa,

para ayudarte a la limpieza (no deja uno de pensar en

Robotina, ¿verdad?), para todo.

Lo mejor de todo es que ya hay robots con personali-

dad, como el “Tomy i-SOBOT”. Según esto,

es el robot más pequeño reconocido

por los Guiness Récords, mide

casi 7 pulgadas, pero no por eso

es el menos divertido. Tiene 200

comandos distintos de voz, 180

movimientos pre-progra-

mados como pararse en una

pierna, hacer lagartijas, artes

marciales y hasta imita a un

vaquero del viejo oeste. Habla,

se presenta y también hace

como que toca la guitarra.

¿Los pros? Para quienes

quieren una mascota pero no

tienen el tiempo para cuidarla,

alimentarla o jugar con ella,

puede ser muy práctico. El

precio es de $200 dólares, que

para lo que costó mi R2-D2

todo austero, sí vale la pena.

¿Los contras? Con lo rápido que

avanza la tecnología, seguro para el

año que entra ya habrá un modelo

nuevo, mejor y más entretenido.

Además, no se vende en México, ni lo

envían por correo para acá.

Poco a poco, hasta las leyes vamos a

tener que cambiar. Yo empezaría le-

yendo las que escribió Isaac Asimov

en sus libros de Ciencia ficción, que

poco a poco parecen proféticos.

Los dejó con la Tres Leyes de Ro-

bótica del señor Asimov, de su libro

“Runaround”.

this is a hypothetical case, but its not that far from becom-

ing a reality. I share this story with you, to prevent you

from a similar scenario – fainting in the middle of street

wearing nothing but your bathrobe – and if you’re lucky like

me – pyjamas.

Why is it time I share this story? I received a robot on my

birthday, an R2D2 from the famous and funny Star Wars

series. I’ll admit, its not the same size and unfortunately it

doesn’t project films like Star Wars original but that would

be over $5 thousand dollars. this one is still really fun

though.

I was fascinated with this little thing and then a friend

showed me that there were more robots. not only for

company use but for everything you can’t do by yourself –

helping you cleaning your house (reminds you of rosie the

robot maid, right?). You can use them for everything.

the most exciting thing about this is that you can already

find robots that have personalities, like “Tommy i-SOBOT”.

they say this is the smallest robot recognized by Guiness

records. measuring 7 inches in heigh, it has 200 different

voice commands, 180 pre-programmed movements like

push-ups, martial arts, and could even be a cowboy if you

wanted him to. It is his small size that makes him less fun

than others. regardless, he speaks, introduces himself and

pretends he plays the guitar.

this is idea for those who want a pet don’t have the time to

take care of it, feed it or play with it . the price is $200.

on the con side. technology is advancing rapidly, maybe

next year there is going to be a new robot; one that is fun-

nier and more entertaining. also, this product is not being

sold in mexico, and there is currently nobody shipping to

mexico.

Little by little, with time, we are going to start changing the
