    Attheage20,Spartanmenhadtopassaseriesofdemandingtestsofphysicalprowessandleadershipabilities.ThosethatpassedbecamemembersoftheSpartanmilitary,andlivedinbarrackswiththeothersoldiers.Theywereallowedtotakeawife,buttheyweren'tallowedtolivewithher.Attheageof30,theybecamefullcitizensofSparta,providedtheyhadservedhonorably.Theywererequiredtocontinueservingthemilitary,however,untiltheywere60.

    UnliketheirAtheniancounterparts,Spartangirlsalsowenttoschoolatseven.There,theylearnedgymnastics,wrestling,anddidcalisthenics.TheseschoolsweresimilarinmanywaystotheschoolsSpartanboysattended,asitwastheSpartanopinionthatstrongwomenproducedstrongbabies,whichwouldthengrowintostrongsoldierstoservethestate.Whilenowonderfulworksofartorliteratureevercameofthissystem,itdidaccomplishtheSpartangoalofproducingelitesoldiers.TheSpartanmilitarywasntuniversallyaccepted,buttheywereuniversallyrespected.
