essential skills in the management of surgical cases
Dear friends and colleagues,
We are delighted to welcome you in Athens for the “3rd Essential Sklills in the Management of Surgical Cases - ESMSC” course which takes place in the Experimental - Research Center ELPEN between 13 and 15 November 2015. This initiative was purely designed for medical students and junior trainees, aiming to familiarize them with the systematic approach of a surgical patient.
ESMSCESMSC is an international course and it is supported by the 7 Hellenic Medical schools as well as multiple Interna-tional Surgical Societies. Our aim is to built a curriculum which is recognized abroad as vital part of the surgical edu-cation.
The Experimental - Research Centre ELPEN supports this innovative initiative via actively being involved in the design of the course and providing all the facilities required to reach the highest standards of an international course.
The 1st ESMSC ran with great success, as as a satellite symposium of the 29th Panhellenic Surgical Conference back in November 2014, set under the auspices of the Hellenic Surgical Society. The 2nd ESMSC expanded and reached the idea of an International Combined Applied Surgical Science and Wet lab Course.
WWe have designed a brand new curriculum which combines the basic sciences’ background along with the clinical aspect of the most common surgical cases and hands-on exposure. The unique perception of our model lies into the combination of basic knowledge with systematic methodology of Surgical Science and the acquisition of skills to deliver patients' care. The second unique part is the introduction of expensive, though promising in vivo experi-ence which hopefully will drive students' initiative as well as expand their competence to effectively perform basic procedures and assist in theatre.
A relevant brand new manual will support the read throughout the course and contribute towards the solidarity of the knowledge acquired. The third edition is on its way, and more than 14 chapters come from UK institutions.
We would like to thank the International Surgical Faculty which keeps the highest standards and promise to carry on working hard to improve. The final curriculum which is now in the research lab, is set up to be released in 2016 named "ccs4", and it would probably be one of the most innovative perceptions in the field of undergraduate surgical education.
With kind regards,

eMERG : esmsc Medical Education Research Group
Dear friends and colleagues
It has been a pleasure for us to be involved in this massive effort to built a new course. We really enjoyed working closely together with the scientific committee as well as ERC ELPEN faculty. The starting point was our passion and will to coordinate multiple aspects of our participation, promoting the course into our classmates. Our aim was to help the course designers to see things better from our per-spective, and hence meet closely our needs as well as built an exciting and amazingly useful course. It is really passionate and triggering to invite medical students from abroad and exhange ideas as well as knowledge. We would like to thank the course designers and the rest of the faculty for inviting us to contribute to this effort and we look forward to a great result!
With kind regards,
On behalf of Students Committee,Nikolaos StaikoglouLead of the Medical Students’ Committee

eMERG : esmsc Medical Education Research GroupThe new Era in Research Opportunities for Medical Students around Europe
Experimental Research Centre ELPEN TheThe eMERG group was introduced as part of the esmsc activity, in order to promote Medical Education research. The main purpose of this idea is to set up a network of qualified clinicians, academics, basic scientists and passionate students, with the aim to conduct high quality research as part of the ESMSC course. The Academic Lead of the group is currently set under Dr A. Papalois and Dr M. Sideris, founders of the esmsc, in close collaboration with experienced academics who comprise the faculty of the course. This group will offer in-dividual high quality teaching and mentorship, in order to run research projects as part of the course. The first paper, which summarizes thethe concept of the course, has already been accepted in Biomed Research International, while the first study is currently in writing stage. There are 2 more studies planned for which the esmsc Students’ committee will take advantage to participate and get guidance from our-
experienced panel of Academics. Georgios Paparoidamis, is a 5th Year Medical Student in AUTH, and he is currently responsible for the set up of the Group with regular Meetings and close communication with our mentors, and especially Dr G. Tsoulfas, Ass. Professor in AUTH. Our upper purpose is to con-duct Research in Animal Model based Education in view of delivering a better generation of well skilledsurgeons inspired and ready to offer the highest quality of care in our patients. The first plan of actions is currently set around esmsc students’ committee, and we aim to have a 1:1 collaboration (student: academic). This pilot trial, will set the ground to expand our group and this is planned hopefully in May 2016. WWe will advertise 2 more places for motivated students who will be asked to support their cv and academic aspirations. We would like to thank our entire faculty for their contribution towards the implementation of a new International Teaching Model, which will hopefully be
the starting point of a new era in Surgical Education.
With kind regards
