Ecohome Tour Stops

2179 Henlyn DriveOver the last decade, this 30-year old home on a small, mainly treed lot has evolved into a lovely permaculture oasis in Sooke's west end. The house is topped with solar panels, while the food gardens (including a lemon tree and banana plant) feature a mix of annuals and perennials. Supporting infrastructure includes composting, a worm farm, rainwater catchment, greywater irrigation, water filtration and a team of industrious worker chickens.

Hosts: Stephen & Lee Hindrichs.Guests: Kuan Jian Foo (Viridian Energy Co-Op) and Brian MacNeill (Sun-Mar composting toilets).

2098 Solent RoadEnergy bills have dropped to an averaged $56 per month thanks to a solar array installed last year by Viridian Energy Co-Operative. The panels also power an EV charger for a 2017 Nissan Leaf. Other features here include a solar hot water system that preheats city water before it gets to the electric water heater; and a beer-can furnace to warm the home's crawl space.

Hosts: Gord Fulcher and Lis Johansen.Guest: Viridian's Steve Unger.

1635 Selborne DriveA 238-sq ft tiny home built this year as a working and retreat space for professional health practitioners Vibeke Vaerum and Michael Cruickshanks. Featuring hand-tooled wood frame construction with almost entirely wood finishings, it was completed without drywall or paint for health, environmental and aesthetic reasons. Rainwater harvesting and composting systems on site.

Hosts: Michael, Vibeke and Homes With Love builder/designer Forrest Adam. Access via Kangaroo Road (turn at Barrow, then follow La Bonne to Selborne) or Rocky Point Road (Liberty, then left on La Bonne). Park in the cul-de-sac at the end of Selborne past the Sooke Hanger sign.

5200 East Sooke Road"The Harmless Home," a Net Zero family residence with panoramic JDF views under construction by Sooke's Ridgeco Develop-ments. Exterior walls are the first to utilize interlocking, fireproof, non-toxic Just BioFiber blocks, made of a hemp-lime mix with R60 insulation value. Once complete, the home will have 16kW of solar panels, Tesla Powerwall back-up batteries, a level-2 septic system and rainwater collection to augment the on-site well.

Host: Arno Keinonen with Ridgeco's Frank McK-endry, Just BioFiber's Michael DuChamplain and sustainability planner/green building designer Jack Anderson. Park carefully on verge of East Sooke Road; shuttle vehicle available to site.

310 Becher Bay RoadThe Rainbird Econest is an offgrid house being built as a sustainable and healthy home that will last for generations on family land. Timbers and much of the lumber was milled onsite. Clay was sourced from Sooke, straw from Saanich. The EcoNest Peregrine design features a timber frame interior and exterior walls of light straw-clay. The solar-powered home incorporates a Faswall (recycled pallet based) foundation, passive solar design, a masonry heater, heat exchange water heater, earthen floors, rainwater collection and greywater irrigation.
