EDITORIALClaregalway is really coming alive now with our new footpaths, lights and flowers adorning the bridgesand the nine arches. I've had a huge response from people interested in becoming involved in the

Tidy Town project which is very positive. Even though the village is still undergoing changes, one hasto start somewhere! New speed limit signs will soon be put up in the village and provision will be

made for the new bus lanes. These bus lanes have been a topic of conversation ever since the idea wasmooted. In theory, the idea sounds good but in practice it remains to be seen. The removal of the traffic

lights at Hughes SuperValue Supermarket to the junction of the village should be very beneficial topedestrians and motorists alike. The footpath at this junction will also be narrowed, making it easier

for traffic flowing through the village. Every measure to improve the village/town is to be welcomed.

Hopefully, the active committee involved in the school safety will have positive results with their

lobbying. Nobody wants an accident to happen before action is taken to deal with the daily traffic

chaos outside the school.

Well done to Ava in Kreation Hair Design on her recent graduation from the Specialist Colour

Course. Ava is pictured on the front page with her model on the day.

The Community Market in Claregalway continues to flourish and it has caused quite a stir in thearea. There is nothing quite like homegrown produce as my family and I have been enjoying since

the Market came. Itis also a weekly get-to-gether for the locals and people passing through. I

believe weekly orders are being placed which is testimony to the Market's success. Continued

success to the team behind this great initiative.

Congratulations and well done to our celebrities Claudine and Sarah (page 6) who have got through

to the live TV show on TG4, Nollaig No 1. Make sure you tune in on Wednesday the 18th and

support our local girls. Every vote counts!

Page 20 gives us a reality check! What is more important in life? Exam fever is rife now and stress

electric - too much pressure is being put on our children. A balance is so important in life. As long

as one does their best, nothing else matters.Father's Day is coming up soon, so make sure you treat your Dad well. After all, they are the taxi-

drivers, the disposable bank, etc. etc. Until next time,

AREA SADDENEDThe area was shocked and saddened with the untimely passing of Regina Duggan Fitzgerald

of Baile an Choiste, Headford Road who was formally of Kiltrogue Castle, Claregalway, Co.

Galway. Regina was struck with the dreaded Multiple Sclerosis some time ago and later

developed further complications. The importance of the need of people to carry organ

donor cards became evident when Regina was put on a waiting list for a heart and lungtransplant. Regina waited patiently but her health went onto decline and eventually time

ran out for the popular young lady. Always of a bubbly nature Regina was much loved by

everybody and evidence of this was clearly shown by the huge numbers that turned up for

her funeral on both days. Regina will be very sadly missed, but fondly remembered by her

loving husband Frankie, parents Martin and Phil Duggan, brother, Adrian and many family

and friends.

The remains of Regina Duggan were removed from Claregalway Mortuary to the Church

of the Assumption and St James' Claregalway. Following con-celebrated Requiem Mass,

where Fr Noel Mullin, P P Claregalway was chief celebrant burial took place in ClaregalwayCemetery.

Regina is survived by her loving husband Frankie Fitzgerald, parents Martin and Phil

Duggan, brother Adrian and his partner Cathriona, niece, nephews, parents in law Jimmy

and Josie Fitzgerald. in-law, aunts, uncles, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of

friends.

banner of SuperValue, a decision that ensures that Hughes' customers are offered the best

in value and choice in the years ahead. The supermarket has also been redesigned and

expanded to16,000

sq. feet in order to offer convenience and comfort while shopping. TheHughes family have expanded their offering by opening a modern new homeware store,

Home and Living, at the rear of the supermarket, opposite the new courtyard development.

The Claregalweay area is developing rapidly and growing into a vibrant satellite town of

Galway city, so particular care and attention to the choice of shops and services is essential

for the community. Claregalway Shopping Centre is bringing it all together in the heart

of this growing village by its recent expansion and coordinated branding. This modern

and spacious shopping centre is owned and managed by the Hughes family who have been

serving the local community for generations.

The centre also comprises a professional office environment on the first floor, which hasits own side entrance as well as access for front main entrance. Itincludes innovative

businesses like Utopia Property Investments, H&R Mortgages Ltd., Hem while U wait,

Hotelvision and Paul Fennell Photo Studio. Also on the first floor is Royal Villa Restaurant.

The new architecturally designed courtyard with spacious underground car park comprises

both prime retail units and luxurious residential apartments. The fluid design of the

courtyard produces a relaxing and inviting environment to shop, eat and pamper yourself.

Established businesses successfully trading include RC Hair Salon and Barber, MacLaverty

Travel, Beyond Beauty and Treat Cafe.

This new development joins the existing complex by way of a protected walkway that allows

you to move freely between the businesses in both buildings. The pharmacy, post office,

supermarket, off-licence and homeware units can be easily accessed from the front or rear

with ample parking all around the centre.

The new developments in Claregalway offer exciting opportunities for dynamic businesses

to locate in this budding satellite town. Consumers are demanding choice, quality and

convenience in their locality and Claregalway Shopping Centre is bringing it all together.

This is the place to be when you are in Claregalway.

SEAN DUFFY - KEY MAN IN KIDNEY

MUSIC JAMBOREEAMusic Jamboree is being organised for the Ardilaun Hotel to supply badly needed funds for the

Galway Branch of the Irish Kidney Association on the Monday night of Race week. The event is

being put together and organised, by well known long serving Night Duty Manager of the Ardilaun

Hotel Sean Duffy, who has been the beneficiary of much support from the Galway Branch of

the Irish Kidney Association for some time. Like many before him it came as a severe shock to

the system when Sean who is a native of Ballyglass, Turloughmore but has lived in Waterdale,

Claregalway for most of his life, discovered that he had kidney failure and that he was in need oftreatment with dialysis.

The Galway Branch of the Irish Kidney Association cares for eighty five patients from Galway city

and county, in Unit 7 of Merlin Park, Hospital, Galway and they carry out a tremendous service

sometimes under great difficulty in a sometimes ailing health service. In most cases it is only when

their own health fails that the grim discovery is made ofjust how valuable these services are to

individuals and families. Frequently lack of finance to upgrade and modernise facilities can put

those operating the service under severe strain and it is Sean's aim to try and help the Galway

Branch of the Irish Kidney Association provide an even better service for patients like himself, who

will be left with their support for life.

In a fundraising venture Sean Duffy has organised an event that will kick off the Race Week festival

of entertainment on Monday, July 28th 2008 in the Ardilaun Hotel with the Music Jamboree.

Many of Ireland's top music entertainers will be performing on the night which to date include

Marc Roberts of Eurovision fame and a well known presenter on Galway Bay FM, the Golden

Trumpet man, Johnny Carroll and his band, Jive Buddies, Horizon, the Guinness Jazz Band, Ivan

and the Missus, Gerry Kennedy, Mairead Taggart, Deja Vu, Metaq and Johnny Burke.

Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Sean Walsh of Galway Bay FM.

Organiser Sean Duffy and his team are currently selling tickets locally for the event at the very

reasonable cost of 10 euro each and is also seeking sponsorship and spot prizes for the night. All

sponsors will be acknowledged on the night and in local press following the event and all proceedswill go towards the Galway Branch of the Irish Kidney Association.

Dear Mum and Dad,

It has now been three months since I leftforcollege. I have been remiss in writing and

am very sorry for my thoughtlessness in nothaving written before. I will bring you up todate now, but before you read on, please sitdown. You are not to read anyfurther unlessyou are sitting down ... Okay?

Well, then, I am getting along pretty wellnow. The skullfracture and the concussion Igot when Ijumped out of the window of mydormitory when it caughtfire shortly aftermy arrival, are pretty well healed now. I only

spent two weeks in the hospital and now Ican see almost normally and only get threeheadaches a day.

Fortunately thefire in the dormitory and myjump were witnessed by an attendant at thegas station near the dorm and he was theone who called the Fire Department and theambulance. He also visited me at the hospital, and since I had nowhere to live because of the

burnt-out dorm, he was kind enough to inviteme to share his apartment with him. It's reallya basement room, but it is kind of cute. He is avery fine boy and we have fallen deeply in loveand are planning to get married. We haven'tset the exact date yet, but it will be before mypregnancy begins to show.

Yes,Mother and Dad, I am pregnant. Iknow how much you are looking forwardto being grandparents and I know you will

Niall Concannon

w w w . n u a c h t c h l a i r . c o ma g e 2 0

welcome the baby and give it the same loveand devotion and tender care you gave me

when I was a child. The reason for the delayin our marriage is that my boyfriend has

some minor infection which prevents usfrompassing our premarital blood tests and Icarelessly caught itfrom him. This will soonclear up with the penicillin injections I amnow taking daily.

I know you will welcome him into ourfamilywith open arms. He is kind and although notwell educated, he is ambtious. Although he isof a different race and religion than ours, I

know you expressed tolerence will not permityou to be bothered by thefact that his skincolor is somewhat darker than ours. I amsure you will love him as I do. His familybackground is good, toofor I am told thathisfather is an important gunbearer in thevillage inAfrica from which he comes.

Now that I have brought you up to date, Iwant to tell you that there was no dormitoryfire, I did not have a concussion or skull

fracture, I was not in the hospital, I am notpregnant, I am not engaged, I do not havesyphillis and there is no boyfriend in my life. However, I am getting a "D"in History andan "F"in Science, and I wanted you to seethese marks in the proper perspective.

Your loving daughter,

Anne
