ORIOLE PRIDE

ORIOLE COMMUNITY GRIEVES THE LOSS OF ONE OF ITS OWN

Springville bid farewell to their biggest fan this past week. Jill Woods passed away last Saturday leaving a dark cloud over athletic events this week. Jill was a dynamic supporter of all athletic programs and especially avid when it came to the girls side of Oriole events. As a Sports Booster, Jill gave countless hours to the booster club and the athletes the organization supports. As an Oriole fan, Jill cheered and encouraged student athletes before, during and after the games, applauding their efforts. As Mother to Ali, a multi-sport, standout athlete and a member of those legendary state basketball and volleyball teams, Jill cheered and encouraged the girls with her usual candor and humor, and in doing so, cultivated this era of athletic success we’ve all relished in. As a member of the Springville business community and owner of “Woody’s One Stop” Jill greeted us each morning with a smile when we stopped for a cup of coffee or her divine hot chocolate. There was no better way to start a day than with the little blonde behind the counter with a big smile and a quick witted line. Facing her battle with cancer, Jill never changed. Oh, she got tougher of course but she sure didn’t lose her sense of humor. Jill fought and persevered, she did all she could and that included doing all she could for us. Never losing sight of the Oriole athletic programs, she quite simply inspired our coaches and our athletes to perform at their highest level. One glance at the trophy cases that align the entry to Machovec certainly proves that our kids listened. Jill was a blessing, she gave all she had and made it look easy. Of course we will continue to miss her, but in doing so, we remember her as she was and will always be—Oriole Proud. Rest easy Jill and one more time…

Let’s Go O’s!

A FACE IN THE CROWD… Oriole Pride catches a super fan from time to time and asks them a few

questions in order to get to know them a little better. This week we caught up with Oriole Legend, Carly Martin who was the point guard on those O’Donnell led state teams: What is one of your best memories as a Lady “O”? Winning state! Wednesday, February 10, 2016 Oriole Pride 2 SPRINGVILLE GIRLS CLINCH TRI-RIVERS

CHAMPIONSHIP

The girls team cruised through another week of basketball beginning last Friday with a championship clinching victory at the hands of North Linn. The girls pounced early and held a 16-7 lead after the first quarter and then fell on their heels a bit when the Lynx battled back and outscored the O’s 10 to 5 in the second. With a 21-17 lead at the break the girls came out early in the third and quickly demonstrated their dominant ways and gained back a 31-20 lead headed into the fourth quarter. The girls held on and survived the physical side of the game and picked up a 46-32 win, their 18th of the season. Friday’s win placed them high atop the list of Tri-Rivers West teams and clinched another conference championship. On Monday a youthful Edgewood-Colesburg team visited Machovec and the Oriole’s quickly gave them a lesson or two in Varsity Basketball 101. The O’s intense defensive pressure was too much for the Vikings and Springville coasted to a 66-24 win on what was celebrated as Senior Night. In this game, the girls tallied an even 21 steals and 21 assists. Tuesday night was a make up game against the Lisbon Lions. Coach Sanderson said that, “after a bit of a slow start in the first quarter (a 4-2 lead after the first 4:00) we managed to blow the game open with a 23-0 run over the next five minutes to take a commanding 27-4 lead. We extended that margin to a 38-8 at the half and cruised from there”. Cruised indeed, as the final was 58-15. The girls ended the game with an impressively equal 20 steals to 20 assists. Tuesday’s win against Lisbon moved the girls to 20-1 on the year and 12-0 in the conference, “which has not been done at Springville since the 2008-2009 season” said Coach Sanderson. And number 20 for the O’s was win number 150 for Sanderson who has earned every one of them. Springville now moves toward the post season as they prepare for a game on Tuesday against HLV. Game time is 7pm right here in our very own Machovec gymnasium. What do you say Oriole fans? Get your game face on and join us, the girls are now beginning part two of their season, miss a minute and you miss a lot!

BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYING TOUGH

You have to credit the Oriole boys squad as they continue to battle some tough Tri-Rivers teams this winter. Last Friday they played Conference Champions North Linn valiantly in the first half before the Lynx pulled away to a 64-37 win. On Monday they hosted a scrappy Edgewood-Colesburg team and cut a 7 point lead to 2 but got no closer in a 51-46 loss at home. Tuesday they turned around to host Lisbon for a conference match up and after falling behind by 18, they closed to within six but couldn’t get over the hump and fell 68-46. That loss moved the boys to 5-16 overall. While the wins haven’t come, improvement sure has. The boys continue to push the ball, contest shots and are more aggressive this half of the season. Their next test is the start of post season action on Monday. They will play the Bellevue Comets at 6:30 at Midland High School in the opening round of district action. We’ll save you a seat Oriole fans! (Pictured to the right is Senior Jacob Loehr who had 10 points against Ed-Co and to the left is Junior Cavanaugh Riley who had 21 against Lisbon)

Even the occasional triple team can’t stop Sophomore Rylee Menster who scored 14 at North Linn last Friday
