The girls wrapped up their conference season with a 3-1 win over the Lynx, 25-18, 25-15, 22-25 and 25-22. That win moves them to 23-7 overall and an undefeated 6-0 record in conference acon. “The Orioles survived a tough match against North Linn. Jennifer had her team ready to play on their Senior Night and it was clear North Linn was going to fight every point. It was a great match and we had to earn it”, said Coach Howard. Senior Megan Wagaman led her team in kills with an impressive 22 and Junior seer Olivia Dlouhy tallied 28 assists on the night. Howard adds that, “I am extremely proud of our program. We were able to end the regular season with an all levels sweep of North Linn while winning the Tri-Rivers West Division Championship with an undefeated conference season 6-0 (8-0 overall). The conference win is a program win and all 36 of our kids helped us earn it. Proud tradion—hard work—winning program… I think that sums up Oriole athlecs quite well. What lies ahead for the O’s is the conference tournament which opens up at home on Thursday, October 15. HOMECOMING WIN KEEPS ORIOLES IN THE POST SEASON MIX

One could argue that the O’s “survived” the first part of their season which had them playing top 8-man teams like HLV, Elkader, Don Bosco and Turkey Valley. To get a win out of those four games says a lot. Now the Orioles are cruising on a two game win streak and look to close out the regular season with two more in hopes of earning a play-off bid. Last week the O’s closed out Homecoming week with a 62-6 trouncing of Kee High. Everyone got a touch in the game as scoring was spread out among the O’s and it was a fantastic night for all the players. A very pleased Coach Martin said “I thought we were ready and not distracted from the festivities that happen during the week. We did a really nice job of playing team defense as we held them right around 100 yards total and even got some turnovers. Offensively we did a really nice job of executing and making plays both on the ground and through the air. Then having younger kids come in and play well was nice to see as we move towards the end of the year”. The O’s broke into the scoring column a total of nine times. Senior Andy Hagensick had a pick six, Senior Jacob Loehr threw for two, one to Freshman Zach March and another to Junior Andrew Blakely. Blakely had a nice pick six that was called back on an Oriole penalty but his 32 yard INT set up another Oriole score. And Loehr, the lanky QB, ran for another touch down from just 4 yards out. Sophomore Henry Hoogland rushed for two of his own while Junior Seth Blake ran for another. Senior Matt Carson carried the ball 3 times and on the third busted through for an Oriole score and Carter Gillmore made some dazzling moves on 5 carries. He finished with 48 yards and a TD as well. It was a great team effort across the entire roster. The Orioles, 3-5 on the year, will travel North to Maynard for a match up with West Central who is also 3-5. A key to that game according to Martin is the big guys on the line, “ If we continue to control the line of scrimmage we should be able to come out of Maynard with a

victory”. The way our big guys have been playing lately? I like our chances. JV will play a half beginning at 5:30 with the Varsity game following. It’s a great time to check out the fall colors and take a drive to Northeast Iowa—see you on the sidelines! WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… This week we have some pretty big college match-ups:

Iowa at Northwestern Alabama at Texas A&M Michigan State at Michigan Florida at LSU Make your picks and for the tie-breaker, which of the above games totals the most points scored in the game? Make your picks and email us at [email protected]. This week we have a sole winner. Larry Riley was a perfect 4 for 4—he called the upsets last week and is this week’s winner. I had an error in last week’s winner—I gave honors to Cavanaugh Riley but actually he tied with Kristi March. It came down to the tie breaker which was the number of 2 point conversions the O’s would have in the Central City game. We actually had 1, Riley guessed 0 and March guessed 2— both had been 3 of 4 on their picks, so a late congratulations to Kristi and we apologize for the confusion. Thanks for playing and have a great week.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL TEAM… Each year the Springville middle school kids participate in a volleyball league held in Mt. Vernon on Sunday afternoons. It’s where the groundwork is laid for the future Lady O’s and this past Sunday was the last week of league play. Won’t be long and we’ll be cheering them on inside Machovec—we thank Rich Blakely for the photo.
