The experience will definitely help us improve as we draw closer to tournament play at the end of the season. The 49-42 loss sends the girls into a solid week of prep to get their feet back under them as they’ll head to East Buchanan on Friday. The Bucs were an easy win in December—the O’s won it 73-6. ORIOLES FALL TO TURKEY VALLEY IN RIVALRY SATURDAY

After defeating North Linn at home on Friday evening by a score of 48-29 the Springville girls basketball team had a short night of rest to take part in the annual Rivalry Saturday games at the US Cellular Center on Saturday. Their opponent was a highly touted Turkey Valley team that was sitting at #3 in 1A rankings. The O’s, number 1 of course in 1A fell victim to what Coach Sanderson called “cold shooting and untimely shooting”. He continued with “Turkey Valley did a great job dictating pressure with their full court man-to-man defense. In the end, their pace and physicality wore us down. We fell behind by as many as 10 points in the first half before closing within 28-24 at intermission...Overall, it was worth taking a loss to play a very good team on the big court at the US Cellular Center. The experience will definitely help us improve as we draw closer to tournament play at the end of the season. I don't think there's any question that we did not play as well as we are capable of (38% FG, 21 TOs), but we gave ourselves a chance even when our shots were not falling”. Worthy? Indeed. competition and there is no doubt that they gained crucial basketball knowledge from this ball game. Saturday’s loss moves the girls to 10-1 overall but they remain 6-0 in Conference action. They tip off in Winthrop at 6:15, we will see you court side.

Wednesday, January 13, 2016 Oriole Pride 2 ORIOLE BOYS LOOKING FOR ANSWERS

It’s been a rough road as of late for the Oriole Boys basketball team. While their intensity remains consistent the boys are struggling to score. North Linn paid a visit last Friday and immediately proved their 9-0 record along with a 10th place state ranking are for real. The Lynx jumped out to a 20-7 first quarter lead and sailed through the next three to hand the O’s a 75-40 loss. Junior Andrew Blakely led the O’s in scoring with 13 points and JP Kane tossed in 9. Like the girls, the boys have a week of prep in order to gain back that mojo. They too head to Winthrop to take on the Buccaneers Friday. Springville sits at 4-6 overall, 3-3 in Tri-Rivers action. Let’s Go O’s!

SPRINGVILLE ARCHERY

Oriole’s Archery Coach Gary Biles checks in again this week with another round of archery action. The team completed their third tournament of the season on Saturday at Central City. In the middle school girls division, Jasmine Jacobsen continues her climb up the scoring ladder with a 28 point improvement from her previous tournament. Jasmine’s 272 placed her 4th out of 104 in her class. Autumn Rathjens finished second for the Springville middle school girls with a 249 score, followed closely by Liz Stejskal’s 248, which is a personal best for her. Cade Zaruba continues to improve shooting a season high 279 in the middle school boys division. Cade’s score placed him 6th out of 117 in his division. Grant Gloeckner 275 was a personal best, followed by Holden Cordes, whose 255 was his all time personal high. The middle school team continues to improve, shooting a 2997, which not only is a season high, but an all time high score by a Springville middle school team. In the high school girls division, Kylie Mysak shot a 281 which placed her 7th out of 62 in her division. Kylie’s score was one point shy of tying the all time Springville record. Jacinde’ Lillard’s 272 was her personal best, followed by Cecilia Burger’s 262. Brian Sindelar was Springville’s top scorer in the high school boys division with a 261, followed by Joel Wickman and Evan Corum’s 247. Quinn Haverkamp shot a personal best score of 241. Springville returns to competition on January 23rd at Solon.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK... There are some pretty wild High School mascots out there. This week we take a look at Frankfort High School in Frankfort, Indiana. The school of 840 students is located in the North Central part of the state. They compete in the typical athletic programs including soccer, tennis and wrestling and they wear the colors of Royal Blue and White. Their nickname? Well it fits—in a town named Frankfort, why not go with the Hot Dogs? Their newsletter is called the Hot Dog Chatter and their fight song? It is that famous jingle, “Oh I wish I were an Oscar Meyer Weiner”… just kidding!

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… 4 play off football games this weekend—make your picks!
