VARIACION DE PRESION EN EL YACIMIENTO DE CERRO PRIETO DURANTE SU EXPLOTACION
Feo. Javier Bermejo M., Feo.

PRESSURE VARIATION AT THE CERRO PRIETO RESERVOIR DURING PRODUCTION
The Cerro Prieto geothermal field is located on the Mexicali Valley alluvial plain. Quaternary piedmont sediments from the Cucapa Range and deltaic sediments deposited by Colorado River meandering currents constitute the western part of this plain whose only prominence is the Cerro Prieto Volcano, about 700 000 years old.
This area is part of the San Andres tectonic system from which different secondary tectonic branches are derived. The Cerro· Prieto geothermal field is located in one of such branches, the so-called Cerro Prieto fault. The Cerro Prieto fault, as well as the most important nearby faultings such as Imperial, Cucapa," Laguna Salada, Algodones, Elsinore, Banning, Mission Creek and San Jacinto, has a northwest-southeast trend (Figure 1). Based on recent geological studies, three main lithologic units have been defined. Lithologic unit A, or top-seal, is composed of unconsolidated deltaic sediments which show repeated sequences of clays, silts, sands and gravels. Unit B is also formed by deltaic sediments, though consolidated and metamorphosed, presenting generally a lenticular bedding of alternating shales, siltstones and sandstones This unit includes the high temperature aquifers. Finally, Unit C is the granitic basement represented in the surface by most of the rocks outcropping in the Cucapa Range.
In April 1973, the Comisi6n Federal de Electricidad started power production at the Cerro Prieto geothermal plant using two turbines that produce 37.5 MW each, with an average steam consumption of 730 ton/hour. It should be mentioned that this plant did not work at its full capacity of 75 MW in the beginning but gradually increased with the integration of new production wells, reaching its full capacity in February 1974.
The group of wells supplying steam to Units 1 and 2, known as Cerro Prieto I, began production seven years ago, although there are older wells within the group (M-5, 16 years) that have been subjected to almost continuous production. Based on data collected during the production years, physical and thermodynamic changes due to continuous exploitation have been detected within the reservoir.
Considering that in this geothermal field most
of the production is of intergranular type, that most of these wells are located within an area of approximately 1.5 km2 and that they have been drilled to about the same depth, and taking into account the continuous exploitation, we can"see that these have been the principal factors for the decrease in pressure observed in the downhole pressure logs that has, in turn, caused water to reach the boiling point in the producing strata. Logs previous to 1973 clearly show some wells in the reservoir producing only hot water, while in subsequent logs the same wells are shown producing a water-steam mixture (Bermejo Mora, F.J. et al., 1978).
Variation pressure curves were drawn based on pressure and temperature logs and on water-surface level data. An average depth of 1200 m was set since most of the wells are exploited in that area. Considering that commercial production began in 1973, curves. were plotted starting in that year and only taking into account wells with just one production zone because in wells with more than one the downhole pressure is affected by the fluid movement occurring among the different zones.
When analyzing the pressure behavior for each well individually, a strong drawdown is observed during the first years; then pressures show an almost asymptotic behavior as can be seen in one of the pressure-time plots (Figure 2) previously fitted for one of the analyzed boreholes.
In the first plot of equal pressure curves corresponding to 1973 (Figure 3) it can be seen how most of the wells are approximately fitted to the 1500 curve and how the pressure is slightly lower than the corre· sponding hydrostatic pressure at the estimated depth. The configuration of these curves shows peripheric wells (M·1l, M-29, M·45, M·46 and M-l0) or the ones farther away from the producing wells core having greater pressures than wells in the core (M·10, M-5, M-15, and M-26) and also than wells whose production started years later.
It should be mentioned that up to the date of the first plotting (1973) only some wells were producing and during that year most of them began producing.
After 1973 curves were drawn every two years.
495
In these plots it is clearly seen how the curves of greater pressure shown in the first plot advanced towards the periphery faster in the first two years than in the subsequent years. It is also shown the appearance of curves representative of lower pressures in the central part of the field, the area most affected by overproduction (Figures 4, 5, and 6) and the appearance of another affected zone corresponding to wells M-38, M-39, and M-13 which were under exploitation, due to different motives, before 1973. These wells were closed in 1974 due to different construction problems; thus their influence decreased in subsequent years.
A plot of the pressure variations that have occurred from 1973 to 1979 in Cerro Prieto I was drawn to show more clearly the pressure drawdown (Figure7).
The configuration of these curves, which are representative of the pressure variation (Psi), shows that the area corresponding to the greater variation is located approximately in the central part of the group of wells that have started production from the beginning, rather than in the periphery, where the behavior for each of the wells will depend, as it was mentioned before, on its position with respect to the zone of greater exploitation and particularly, on its contribution capacity to the reservoir and the obstacles such contribution encounters.
Based on these pressure variation curves, it is concluded that: 1) the south zone is the one with lesser contributions (wells M-29 and M-30), 2) in the zone that includes well M-t 0 there are contributions but these probably find some restrictions, and 3) the northeastern zone is where the greater recharges take place.
From the results obtained with the geophysical and geological studies, it has been determined that the granitic blocks forming the basement, as well as the deltaic sediments, were affected by tectonic uplifts and falls and strike-slips. Analysing the zone that contains well M-10 we found that, in the geological structures, there is an elevation that could be considered as a constraint to the contribution flow for this zone.
In order to be able to determine the thermal recharges that flow to the Cerro Prieto I area, it was neces
. sary to carry out pressure and temperature studies in most of the wells drilled to date.
When a series of wells situated between the northern zone of the field and the southwestern one were analyzed, the maximum temperature found in any stratum and the pressure at this depth (pressure-temperature) for each one of the wells, were compared to the equilibrium
2%curve of a salinity solution (Figure 8). Most wells in the Cerro Prieto I area were fou.,d to be below or
close to the equilibrium curve at the onset of production. Because of the effects of pressure drawdown due to continuous exploitation, all these wells are presently believed to be on the equilibrium curve, and the reservoir to be boiling.
Analyzing wells located on both sides of a line drawn from well M-53 to 0-473 (Figure 9) and comparing their corresponding maximum temperature and pressure to the equilibrium curve (Figure 10), most wells were observed to contain a stratum with fluid in equilibrium.
On the other hand, analyzing the enthalpies found through the years of field production, it was observed that the greater enthalpies were also detected in the area of the M-53 to 0-473 (Figure 11) which coincides with a zone of possible faulting. It has been suggested that these greater enthalpies were caused by upflows of hot water due to natural convection or otherwise forced by the same contribution flux. This hot water current was able to rise to top strata following the basement and top seal configuration and during the rise it provoked evaporation. The steam from such an evaporation underlined the non-permeable strata and was rapidly drawn out during the first production years, giving as a consequence a drawdown in the enthalpy values (Figure 12). Later these values tended to stabilize at the temperature of the water of the strata.
Based on the temperature logs it has been determined that it is possible to detect: the thermically affected well zones and the reasons for their behavior, the currents that feed the reservoir and their convective movements, and the possible faultings running across the field that serve as the main way of communication among the thermal fluids.
Analyzing the correlations of temperature logs from well M-114 to M-91 (Figure 13), M-11 to M-91 (Figure 14) and M-43 to M-50 (Figure 15), the continuation of faulting "B;' (Figure 16) was determined, which is compatible with data obtained from geophysical methods. The area between these faulting zones has the highest recorded enthalpy, and, according to pressure variation curves, must be the channel for the .contribution fluid feeding Cerro Prieto 1. Based also on these same correlations it is possible to detect two other thermal anomalies which would imply structural faultings, one ("0") close to well M-114 and the other ("G") between wells M-84 and M·91; the latter being parallel to faulting "B" (Figure 16).
Analyzing the correlation from well M·43 to M-50 (Figure 15), anotHer thermal anomaly was determined that constitutes, apparently, another faulting we have called "C" (Figure 16). Faulting "C" crosses faulting
496
"B" and has a rather remarkable thermal influence since it becomes a center of thermal contribution to wells located close to the crossing point. South of the crossing point, in the area close to wells M-45, M-105, M-181, M-9, M-29, M-34 and 0-473, the correlation from well M-9 to M-101 (Figure 17) shows that when the distance to the crossing point increases, the temperature decreases; therefore we conclude that the flow from faulting "c" feeds the lower zone of the wells {1400 m). It can also be seen that well M-101 belongs to another structural system of thermal contributions, different from the one where wells M-105 and M-181 belong and different from the one where wells M-27, M-20, etc., belong, but similar to the well M-90 and well M-91 systems.
The possible faultings of the geological structures, the position of the impermeable layers and the convective movements have been clearly determined by the temperature correlation from well M-110 to 0-473 (Figure 18). According to this correlation faulting "A" (Figure 16), already detected by geophysical methods, is located between wells M-110 and M-10. Faulting between wells M-45 and M-105 can also be detected in this correlation, where
higher temperatures tend to be closer to the surface to the southwest, because the top seal is not so thick and the hot fluid rises by convective movements. This stratum presents high gas contents (H2S and C02). It seems that this stratum feeds hot fluid to Laguna Vulcano, causing decreasing surface thermal manifestations with increasing production in Cerro Prieto I. The Laguna Vulcano area used to be rich in steam, but, as it was explained in the enthalpy variation of the field, nowadays the amount of steam has decreased. Moreover, the thermal springs in Laguna Vulcano show the possible influence of faulting "B" and the Cerro Prieto fault, and due mainly to the thinner seal layers and the fact that they are interbedded with alluvial fan sediments, the top seal tends to disappear and hot fluid easily rises to the deltaic sediment seal, as it can be seen in the correlation of well 0-473 (Figure 18).
When the temperature correlations were made for' the new wells drilled in the nor,~heast area of the Cerro Prieto field, faultings already detected by geophysical methods were determined and confirmed, as well as others not previously detected. For example, faulti,1gs "E" and "B", already detected by geophysical methods, and faulting "F", previously undetected, were determined in the correlation (from well M-53 to T-366 (Figure 19) and i,n the, one from M-110 to M-93 (Figure 20). In these correlations it can also be seen that temperatures decrease slightly in wells located farther to
the east of the field, except for wells intimately united to faulting "A", which has, apparently, hot fluid contributions that are greater at the crossing with faulting "B".
The higher temperatures (356°C) were detected in the correlation between wells M-53 and M-150, so it seems that temperatures increase to the north of the field and with shallower depths, as it is shown by the isotherm diagram which was plotted to the higher well temperatures.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the studies carried out we conclude that:
1. The hydraulic recharge comes mainly from the northeastern part of the field.
2. The hydraulic recharge is influenced by the structural faultings and natural elevations.
3. The crossing of faultings causes the formation of "centers" of thermal contribution.
4. The higher temperature zone lies to the north of well M-150.
5. The occurrence of fractures means there are faultings generally associated to thermal fluid contribution.
6. The decrease in Laguna Vulcano springs is strongly related to field production, mainly production in wells along faulting "B".
