Section 508 of the

Rehab ActIn 1998, Congress amended theRehab Act to require all Federalagencies to make their electronic

and information technologiesaccessible to persons withdisabilities. Telecommunicationproducts were specificallyaddressed in i 1194.2 3 .

In 199 6 , Sections 2 55 and 2 5 1(a) (2) of the Telecom Act of 19 3 4 were amended withsimilar language to require all

manufacturers of telecomequipment and providers of telecom services to beaccessible and usable bypersons with disabilities.

Sections 208 and 255

The 199 6 and 1998amendments to these Actsensured that persons withdisabilities will have access to

newer telecom services suchas cordless phones, wirelesspagers & devices, operator services, and custom callingfeatures such as call-waiting.

T he Hearing AidCompatibility Act of 1988

Codified at 47 U.S.C. i 6 10, theHAC Act is separate from the

ADA. The Act¶s purpose is to

ensure reasonable access totelephone service by personswith hearing disabilities. Itcurrently applies to wireline andcordless phones only.

Traditional Relay:1) Contact Virginia Relay using

a TT Y (text telephone) or another assistive telephonedevice.

2) The Virginia Relay Operator connects the other person.

3 ) The Operator ³relays´ theconversation back and forth.

Remember: Standard phone users caninitiate calls through Virginia Relay too!
