HISTORY OF MARACAIBO

On his third trip ( 1498 ) Columbus crossed the Gulf of Paria and sighted the coast of South America , in the east of the current Venezuela , which he called "Tierra de Gracia " and described it as " Paradise on Earth " . A year later , an integrated among others by Amerigo Vespucci , expedition explored the coastal area to Lake Maracaibo ; and there, when crossing a small coastal island called the place Venezuela ( Little Venice ) by the landscape and wooden houses on the coast , conducted by the locals Indians, typical constructions that gave the name to this country.
